| The stipulated cost of living per month per student in Sweden is 6300 swedish crowns. ( check here for local currency conversions ) Approximate costs of food stuff here is something like : Milk ( 1litre ) 10 kr Rice 8 kr ( can be up to 15-16 kr ) Coke (1.5 litre) 10 kr Beer 6-20 kr per can Chicken around 15 kr per kilo (halal and otherwise) Yoghurt 10 kr per litre Misc. Expenditures Cell Phone Phones can be purchased at Giraffen (SIBA or ONOFF) or at PhoneHouse (Centrum) - cost around 800-1000kr A sim card can be bought for 199 sek (comviq - most of the students use this, and it is a better deal than most others) Recharge : Costs around 100-150 sek (a recharge is valid for a whole year) Travel Bus Passes can cost anywhere from 300 to 500sek per month Buying Stuff: Grocery ICA MAXI in Giraffen is the largest supermarket around the campus. For those on the other side, there are plenty of stores around centrum which offer pretty much the same foodstuffs. Netto in Ledungsv�gen is another alternative. There is also a Lebanese store the other side of the bridge beyond Maxi, that sells things at bulk rate. Student Union Card Before you do anything, the most important thing to do is get your student union card - at the student union office (150 sek) Financial Resources Banking: There are three choices of banking in town - Nordea Bank, F�reningsSparBanken (FSB), and HandelsBanken. (ALL in Centrum). You have to be employed to use a credit card, but they do offer debit cards otherwise, which can be very handy - they have ATMs all around the place, and every store accepts debit cards. These banks also issue Swedish photo-ID cards , which you will find useful , instead of having to carry your passport or other identifications. (Note that you have to have a social security number before you apply for a photo ID) Getting your Social Security Number and Photo ID If you have a visa for more than 12 months, you can apply for your Social Security Number (personnummer, or personal number) at Skatteverket(the tax office) in centrum. If you have a visa for less than 12 months, you can apply for a temporary number, but preferably after you have confirmed that with the head of the program. What you have to take with you : - A copy of the admission letter - Passport Photo ID - Application for the photo ID can be made at the bank where you have opened an account. This costs around 250sek What you have to take with you : - Your Passport (as proof of identity) - The letter from Skatteverket with your personal number on it - A couple of passport sized photos : there is a photo studio on the first floor across the lane from Stadium, in centrum (100sek, 4 photos) (photos from your home country will most probably not work) |
