DONT CALL ME A GRINCH, I LOVE CHRISTMAS
...BUT, i just seem to be wondering what the whole point of it all is, and why we even bother?  I mean, I could sit here and type out an essay on how the commercialism of the holiday season is ruining the overall feelings of the day, but commercialism is an accepted fact in our society (not to go deep in this subject, but face it, lives are build on selling out)

Instead i want to talk about gifts.

We all love them, don't we?  Little surprises wrapped in festive paper, sealed from our eyes.  What could it be? We wonder, as we shake the present wildly, in hopes that our minds will recognize the sound.

I think gifts are great, although personally I'm not a big fan of getting them (for reasons i'll explain later).  Who doesn't like seeing little kids all happy after opening a box with the toy they wanted for so long, doesn't that just warm the human heart.  Yes, children don't fully apprecitate the gifts they get.  Who cares though, spend a little money and make them smile.

The thing is though, gifts are suppose to mean something.  I'm probably one of the few teens that hates getting money.  Yes, I HATE GETTING MONEY.  Why, you ask?  It has no meaning.

Money is just so thoughtless.  All you do is open your wallet and shove a bill into an envelope than hand it off to whoever you wish to give it to.  Yeah, thats so great.

Yes you can take that money and buy whatever you want with it.  I could probably save that twenty, for college, but thats not the point.  I get money all the time.  My parents hand it to me when I need it, or I can get it if I work for it.  This is a gift, not payment for my friendship.

Gifts are the best when they come from the heart.  Not to sound all sappy, but it just really wonderful to recieve something that shows how much you mean to someone.  How great is it when my mom got me a book of poetry by Wislawa Szymborska?  That put an instant smile on my face.  Even if she got it wrong when she thought Wislawa was my favorite poet, it still shows that my mother took time out of her time to find something that I really cared about.

I dont expect this from people that dont know me.  I dont expect a person who barely even knows my name, or that I even exist to go out there way to get me something that I want.  But when it comes to friends and close family, it really makes it worth ripping apart that wrapping paper to find a gift that shows that they know you.

This doesn't mean that a person has to go all crazy looking for something you love, it just means that a person should be observant in what they get for someone.  Like I was thinking recently what I would get for some of the people I know.  A pipe, a book about punk music, gift certificate to a gas station, gift certificate to hot topic (if you read this, you know who you are).

Yeah gift certificates are really close to money, its pretty much the same thing, except crapier since you cant use it all over the place.  However, their strenght lies in the fact that they show some consideration.  My gift certificate to hot topic, well my friend loves hot topic, so what better gift than to allow him to shop their some more.

Whatever, I guess I just hate opening presents and finding things that totally arent me or cash.  Maybe im just being a spoled little brat.  Never claimed to be anything more than selfish.

Well, MERRY CHRISTMAS and A HAPPY NEW YEAR.
