Why DNA???

Why DNA your dogs?
The claims seem outrageous — permanent identification, unequivocal determination of parentage, even discovery of genetic diseases — but they are becoming more commonplace with each passing day. The potential is enormous: not only will dog breeders be able to identify the sire and dam of a litter or an individual dog if there's ever any doubt, but the registries will have the tools to uncover fraud (paper hanging).

In this day an age, we find it increasingly necessary to perform DNA Tests. We don't know about you, but we want to KNOW where our dogs come from and if we acquire a dog from someone else we WANT to know it's off the parents they say they are. We've all read before how in the days of old they would not register the dogs correctly, blah, blah, blah... It's no longer the days of old and we believe KNOWING 100% where your dogs come from is KEY in preserving family traits. We may not know exactly if our dogs pedigrees are correct or not, as we have no control over the past generations that we did not breed, and anyone who says their dogs are 100% bred the way the *papers say* are fooling themselves...  However, we can guarantee that any dog that leaves this yard, that was bred on this yard, is bred the way we say it is... PERIOD. Many people say that DNA'ing ones dogs can incriminate you if someone is found doing something illegal with a dog you bred? HOW? Your dogs name is already on the papers, so what does it matter? We feel it's just an excuse not to do the tests. Besides.... there is a strict confidentiality policy regarding the database of DNA profiles through the ADBA.

We've heard some people say that all this DNA talk is a *SALES PITCH*, oh PLEASE get over it. It's not a sales pitch since dogs and pups can be sold all day of the week and twice on Sunday with absolutely no DNA testing ever done. If and when we do sell a pup/dog it cost the same whether the parents are DNA'd or not. People who claim this are just jealous others are actually taking the time out and spending the $50 to try to better the dogs. If it's not your thing, FINE don't do it, no one is telling anyone they HAVE TO DNA their dogs, but wouldn't you want the peace of mind of knowing the dog is really off the parents the papers say? Just think if everyone spent the $50 to do this, the shady paper hangers would slowly be eradicated and those who HAVE hung papers would be caught redhanded!!!!

DNA Testing can be a very valuable tool if you really use it. It can unveil which particular dogs possess the most COMMON GENETIC STRUCTURE of the sire or dam you desire. We have not DNA'd the whole yard, but will start doing it as each dog earns the right to be bred.

As time progresses DNA TESTING will provide valuable information to the dog breeder who is trying to raise healthier dogs and the dog buyer who wants to own a healthy, happy dog. This testing, coupled with the identification and parentage verification testing discussed above, will give the dog fancy the opportunity to reduce or eliminate a number of important genetic diseases and enhance a number of positive traits if desired.

Another extremely attractive feature is that DNA is archived and can be retrieved and studied at a later date when new genetic discoveries are made. Being able to ascertain whether an influential dog carried a specific virtue or problem retrospectively will enable breeders to make breeding choices more wisely.

Myths: You can identify a dogs breed by DNA Testing?

Facts: ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A dog's breed cannot be proven, not even by DNA. Therefore, the determination of a breed is the subjective opinion of the observer.

Myths: You can tell who the dogs grandparents were?

Facts: DNA testing will simply tell you who the dogs actual MOTHER AND FATHER are, nothing more, nothing less. It will not tell you who the grandparents are, the great grandparents or uncles or whether the dog is mixed or not. It will simply identify who the parents are!!!

DNA testing will revolutionize the registration process if ADBA requires testing as a condition of registration.... which we feel it should be a requirement, but of course that is just our opinion. Hope this helps anyone who wasn't too familiar with the whole DNA thang'...

About DNA Certification:
(Quoted from the ADBA Site)

IDENTITY:
DNA Certification provides a unique means of identification and the ability to determine whether a dog was the offspring of a particular sire and dam. DNA provides a unique identification and the ability to determine yes or no, if a dog was produced by a particular sire and dam. Although DNA will not tell you the breed of a dog, it can verify from which parents a particular dog was born.

ACCESS TO DNA INFORMATION:
The ADBA has a strict confidentiality policy regarding its database of DNA profiles. Information from the ADBA DNA database will only be used for identification and parentage and will be released only to the dog's owner or to a person authorized to receive the information by dog's owner. After the Certificate has been issued, all subsequent registration certificates and pedigrees will indicate that a DNA profile is recorded on that sire or dam.

COLLECTION OF DNA SAMPLE:
To collect the DNA sample, the dog's mouth is swabbed around the inside of the cheeks with a small brush to collect cheek cells that contain the dogs DNA. On request, the ADBA will send out a DNA collection kit for a $2.00 fee for each dog to be profiled. All of the necessary forms, directions for cheek swab collection and the cheek swab are included in the collection kit.

PROCESSING OF DNA SAMPLE:
After the DNA sample is collected, the owner fills out the DNA Service Sample Submission Form (included in the collection kit) with the information on the dog and send this and the cheek swab, along with a $50.00 DNA analysis fee to the ADBA. The genetic sample information is entered into the ADBA database and the genetic sample submitted to MMI Genomics, Inc, the testing laboratory. Once the DNA is analyzed, the information is returned to the ADBA where the DNA analysis is recorded and the ADBA DNA Certificate is created. The genetic information and ADBA DNA Certificate is then sent to the owner of the dog. The processing time for this service is approximately 6-8 weeks.

ADVANTAGES OF DNA ANALYSIS AND CERTIFICATION:
Each genetic profile is unique to each individual dog and provides a positive identification of the dog. DNA Certification enhances the value of the pedigree as a breeding tool by providing scientific verification of parentage. It can also safeguard a breeder's reputation by offering certified parentage of all litters.

WHEN DNA CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED:
Currently, a DNA profile is required for: 1) The stud dog on all litters or individual dogs being registered produced using artificial insemination using frozen semen; or 2) Any brood stock that is producing pups before 9 months of age or after 11 years of age. Otherwise, DNA Certification is offered to breeders on a voluntary basis.

Here is a sample of one of our dogs DNA:

This is a Sample of A.D.B.A. D.N.A. Parentage Certificate. This certificate displays the registration information and DNA profiles for individual dog, as well as the dog’s sire and dam. If both parents are certified, you can send in your dogs DNA and order this Certificate for $20

NOTE:WE CAN ONLY GUARANTEE A DOG IS BRED THE WAY WE SAY IT'S BRED IF YOU ACQUIRED THE DOG DIRECTLY FROM US. WE RECORD EVERY DOG THAT LEAVES THE YARD WITH PICTURES AS TO IDENTIFY THE DISTINCTIVE MARKINGS OF EACH DOG AND SOMETIMES TATTOOS AS WELL. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW IF SOMEONE ACQUIRED A DOG FROM US, THE DOG THEY GOT FROM US DIES, SO THEY GET ANOTHER DOG, USE OUR PAPERS ON A NEW DOG AND SELL IT TO SOMEONE ELSE WITH OUR DEAD DOGS PAPERWORK.  NOW THIS NEW DOG HAS OUR DOGS PAPERS, BUT IT'S NOT THE DOG WE BRED????? IT CAN HAPPEN, WE DON'T PUT ANYTHING PAST SOME FOLKS WITH THESE DOGS. AS SOON AS WE FIND OUT ONE OF OUR DOGS HAS PASSED WE NOTIFY THE ADBA & HAVE THEIR PAPERS REVOKED & TAKEN OUT OF THEIR SYSTEM.  WE TRY TO ACQUIRE THE PAPERS BACK FROM WHOMEVER OWNED THE DOG. IF WE OWNED THE DOG, THE PAPERS ARE SENT BACK WITH "DECEASED" WRITTEN ACROSS THE REGISTRATION PAPERS... YOU CAN MAKE A COPY OF A DEAD DOGS PAPERS IF YOU LIKE THE DOG SO MUCH YOU WANT IT FOR "MEMORIES SAKE", BUT THE "ORIGINAL REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE" OF A DEAD DOG SHOULD BE SENT BACK IN TO THE ADBA WITH "DECEASED" WRITTEN ON THEM SO THERE IS NOW A RECORD IN THE REGISTRY THAT THE DOG HAS DIED. THERE IS NO REASON FOR ANYONE TO HOLD ON TO A DEAD DOGS REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE.....
!!! BE CAREFUL WHO YOU GET YOUR DOGS FROM !!!
