Millburn Yard

The Bus Shelter

Go out of the station, turn left at the end of the square.  Walk along the road.  It is about a mile long walk so if you would rather take the bus you may but it will cost about 60p.  To take the bus or not, walk East of the station, staying on the left hand side of the road.  Walk past Deep Pan Pizza Co. and around the corner.  There is a bus stop on your left.  Buses come every ten minutes or so.  Its 1,2 or 10.  You are getting off at the Chieftain Hotel.  If you wish not to bus it, walk past Safeways and along the Dual Carrageway past the yard.  There is one gap in the wall but the view is not too good.  Carry on walking until you get to the next Bus stop.  There are hoardings their.  Before it is a gap.  There you can see whatever is in the yard.  This usually consists of two 37s and two 66s.  All Eastbound and Southbound trains pass here as well.  Sometimes the view can be blocked or you may need Binoculars depending on how good your eyesight is because. he trains are about 50 yards away.*****

(The Field)

Continue along Millburn Road past the bus stop until you come to the first roundabout. Turn left over the level crossing, and follow the road round until you pass the first of the garages. Roughly opposite the turn off on the right is a small road to the left (just before the start of the new large warehouses and the gas holder) Take this road up, and there is a wasteland field at the end. Any class 66s in the depot can be viewed, along with most passing trains and class 37s.***

27/9/01

On a recent trip to this location, I found out that the field has been turned into a car park for a gym, making it easier to access this location.

Back of Ness Motors

Walk through the forecourt of Ness Motors (Renault dealer) and past the fence at the rear. Go through the barrier, and up to the next fence. With binoculars, class 37s can be viewed.***

37/4s and 66s mostly

08, ex-res 47s (occassional)
56s (very rare)
60s have been up three times ever!

Burnett Road (the harbour Branch)

Take bus number 17A from Strothers Lane (walk 100yds up platform 7, exit the gate, walk across the car park, turn left and continue down the road past TK Maxx clothing store. The bus is quite regular and the destination reads Longman Industrial Estate) This bus will take you to the depot on Burnett Road. Exit the depot, and take the road to the left, towards the bakery. At the t-junction, turn right and then follow the road. This will eventually take you out at the harbour branch.**

Classes 37 and 66
Class 08 used to be common (when EWS had 08720 in Millburn Yard)
Passing class 158s
Reversing stock for the fueller eg the HST at night.

Culloden Moor Station

Take Highland Country bus number 12 (Croy/Piperhill) to Culloden Moor village. (this bus service is not very frequent, so take time to plan your trip) Go past the battlefield and into the village. Alight here, and then after the road crosses over the railway take a right into the mini industrial estate. Go past the bitumen depot and you will end up on the old platforms. It is possible to get right up the platform, but take care as it is not in great condition. If you do not mind taking quite a long walk, you can take the Guide Friday open top bus (April-October only) to Culloden Battlefield and then walk the mile or so to the village. This is a very good place for photography, and everything going south or approaching the station passes through here.****

Classes 37,47,66
Sleepers
HSTs
158s and 170s to Edinburgh or Glasgow
Royal Scotsman
Charters
Good views of the viaduct.

The Carriage Sidings

Walk out of the station along platform, as if you were going towards the bus station, not straight to the end of the platform. Follow the road past the post office, and the entrance to the multi-storey car park. Instead of going towards the roundabout, take the set of steps on the right up to the dual carriageway (Longman Rd). Keep going straight on, over the railway line until you come to the turn off for the IMO car wash. To the right are the carriage sidings and the depot entrance is straight on.

Auldcastle Road

Leave the station as if you are going to the bus stop, and carry on walking until you get to Safeways. Cross the road, and beside the Farm and Household store, there is a path with steps heading up to the right. Take this path, and keep going until you reach the top. Turn left, and go along until you can see right over the yard. Everything is identifiable with binoculars. Not advisable on your own after dark....

All trains apart from northbound workings. ***
