Equipment Price Lists
While everything you do that is associated with this unique hobby is tax deductible, it can, in some instances, run up quite a tab. This list is a place to start. ALWAYS check with an officer, NCO or lady about camp before you rush out and buy equipment, uniforms or dresses.
Some can be had inexpensively, but mistakes can be expensive. Especially if you buy something that is not appropriate for our impression.
It is important for a soldier to get a basic uniform ASAP, as this lightens the strain on our limited loaner gear, much of which is the personal property of other reenactors in the regiment.
To make yourself the most comfortable, get a canteen and a tin cup before anything else.
A basic uniform can be purchased for about $165. Those first two things can get you by for quite awhile if your funds are limited.
When making specialized purchases such as buying a rifle or a tent, it is advisable to consult an NCO beforehand, as they can point you to the best and most reliable makers. Also, they may have contacts regarding used equipment being privately sold, which can save some expense.
Listed below is the basic uniform and equipment of the 79th. Remember, always feel free to consult an NCO or another senior reenactor if you have a question regarding any item.
1) Coat: Sack Coat. A plain, 9 button Shell Jacket is also allowed, just be sure to consult an NCO for period styles.
2) Pants: Sky blue trousers.
3) Shirting: Period cotton shirt. A modern, button down shirt may be worn until a period one is purchased.
4) Footwear: Brogans. Plain, dark colored shoes are ok, just wear gaiters over them.
5) Hats: An untrimmed Kepi is standard. A good, wide brimmed slouch hat is also ideal for rain and sun protection, but it is optional.
6) Haversack: A tarred one is advisable, but plain is ok.
7) Leathers:
Belt with SNY buckle. A US buckle is ok, but we prefer SNY if you can get it.
Cartridge box with SNY box plate. (US is ok)
Cartridge box sling with Eagle plate.
Cap pouch.
Bayonet scabbard.
8) Rifle: A three band Enfield is recommended, but a 3 band Springfield is ok. Do NOT buy a 2 band rifle or a Zouave rifle.
9) Canteen: Stainless steal is advisable as it doesn't rust as fast. Wooden canteens are for Confederates.
10) Great Coat: Sky blue, infantry pattern. These are not worn often, but they are nice for cold and wet weather.
11) Tent: Dog Tent, A Frame or Wall Tent. Wall tents are usually reserved for families. If you are single, it is best if you get an A Frame.
