Meeting Minutes ~ Nevada City, 10 September 2005

Members present: Susan and Michael Gjerde, Steve Baxter, Joel and Elizabeth Quivey, Richard and Wendy Kizer, Douglas Reid.

Also present, but currently not members: Dave Davenport, Neil and Bryce Kuykendall, Terry and Helen Anderson, David, Piper and Paige Johnson.

Meeting called to order at 5:22 by Susan.

Officers for the 2006 season will be voted in at Modesto, 15-16 October!

(Discussion: Question on the number of corporals needed to run the unit. Rank ratio needs to be considered. For our current size, the minimum NCOs needed to successfully command the unit on the field are one 1st Sgt, one 2nd Sgt, and one Corporal. The possibility of electing one corporal now, and then giving a temporary brevet to an able private during a weekend of especially large numbers was thought convenient. The decision to brevet a corporal would be to the captain’s discretion, and he would consult the NCO staff for a candidate. All this would require a bylaw change.)

Joel motioned to elect the minimum number of NCOs this season; Douglas and Steve seconded. Motion passed.

Current nominations for 2006:

President: Susan Gjerde

Treasurer: Douglas Reid

Secretary: Elizabeth Quivey

Captain: Steve Baxter

1st Sergeant: David Quivey

2nd Sergeant: Douglas Reid

Corporal (1): Michael Gjerde, Joel Quivey

Susan debriefed us on the duties of the BOD. Voting will take place at Modesto, Oct 15-16. If anyone will not be present to vote at Modesto, they will be able to vote by proxy email before Modesto. Email your choice candidates to the Secretary ([email protected]) and Treasurer ([email protected]); votes will be compiled and results announced after the regular vote at Modesto.

Treasurer Report: Since last month’s published report in the Courier, our current balance is $1,859.86. The purchase of national colors is still pending; that would cost about $5-800 (EQ: more like over 1K).The rifle co-op is still under contract.

(Background: Douglas debriefed us on the new idea to solve the loaner rifle problem. Currently, rifles loaned to the same two or three people all season long leave no room for prospective members to try out the hobby. With the rifle purchase co-op in place, new members of one year would have the opportunity to purchase their own rifle with the help of 79th funds, to be paid off by the member to the 79th on a monthly pay basis. The 79th would own the rifle until paid off completely by the member. This would allow new members to acquire an expensive piece of equipment faster, and free up our loaner gear for prospective members.)

Susan proposed the need for one more loaner rifle in addition to our current two. Since we have sufficient funds in our account, Michael proposed and Steve seconded that we appoint Claude to oversee the purchase of a new rifle and bayonet for our loaner gear.

Other Business:

Terry thanked us for giving him the opportunity to play infantry with us this year; he and Helen plan to join us next season. Yay!

Dave asked if there had been any new developments about acquiring the old loaner gear from some former 79th members. Susan said that was water under the bridge.

Steve volunteered to make the flagpole for the new regimental guideon.

Steve recognized our newest fresh fish, Richard Kizer. Welcome!

Meeting adjourned at 5:50.

Respectfully submitted,

Elizabeth Quivey

Secretary
