Using key word and whole phrase searches on British scones.
Thinking of starting a new business on "selling scones," I started to find some information about it. What? my future job is a scone seller? Well, I used to dream about having my own bakery that I am going to sell hot British scones through a small shop around EWHA. As a side job.
Using search tools such as Ask Jeeves, and Yahoo, I am going to type some key words in the query box. My key words are British Scone, Receipes, Origin. You need to know all about scone itself if you are thinking of making it and selling it. So, I experimented Ask Jeeves first. Typed british scone instead of just scone for there are a few homonyms for the word "scone. Ask Jeeves answered me with too many scone recipes, so I typed more specific terms in the query box with quotation marks on it, "origin of british scone. " Unfortunenately, there was no match for that phrase. Another try on Boolean query then, origin +scone +recipe -hotel. Why hotel? Cuz, I found there was a hotel category in the web when I was searching it with basic key word searching that I wanted to drop that results from my list. Finally! It was the best way of trying the Boolean query method! There was a perfect match for my search goal. "Where does the word scone come from and when was it invented?" From the Web Chef, I could grab all the answers that I was inquisitive about. This web page also kindly suggested some links for the traditional Scottish recipe link and history of scone. Now, let's move on to Yahoo. As I found it out the Boolean way of searching gives more detailed and efficient results, tried the exact same way on the Yahoo query box, origin +scone +recipe -hotel. And what happened? Almost the same results as the Ask Jeeves offers. OK then, Let me try some other key word since I have known more detailed story about the scone now. Typed +scottish +scone +original +bakery to find the bakery which sells the most typical Scotish scone. Wow, about 874 results, try some web pages of from the top 20. And there is the page what I was looking for! Wow, here comes the list of 390 of the best site selection of baked goods. It was a nice try to search on about the subject with the Boolean method, I will be a better web surfer with Boolean! |
