The Horses of the Mark

The mearas

The mearas, or Horses of Rohan, were Felarf and his decendants. The mearas would allow no one but the King of the Mark or his sons to ride them (with the exception of Shadowfax). They had such beauty and strenght, it was believed Orom, one of the Valar, brought the first meara to Middle-earth from Valinor. The mearas, renowned for their strength, swiftness and intelligence, were considered the greatest horses of Rohan. They lived about eighty years and were white or grey.

Firefoot (WR): The horse used by omer during the War of the Ring.

Hasufel (WR): Meaning 'dark skin' in Rohirric. A large grey horse which was lent by omer to Aragorn.

Lightfoot (TA 3000): Father of Snowmane.

Shadowfax (WR): Chosen by Gandalf to be his mount, when Thoden offered him any horse. Shadowfax was the strongest and fastest horse in the War of the Ring. His coat was silvergrey, to which his name refered.

Snowmane (TA ? - 3019): Mount of Thoden. Was slayed together with his master by the Lord of the Nazgl in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

Stybba (WR): Given by Thoden to Merry. He rode him during the ride from the Hornburg to Dunharrow.
