The Role of Love in Man's Life

by Mary Ann Varona

What is love? This question is very significant to everyone. No one can really define what love is. Although we have so many definitions and points of view about love, it is not clearly defined to reach the fulfillment of an individual. Yet, they keep on asking what love is. But knowing it is not enough.

It's not a matter of how you know love and how you find love, but it's a matter of how you experience love by your own. You will not understand the true essence of love unless you haven't experienced it. Experiencing love is the greatest achievement of a person. It is the source, the highlight, and the life of a human being.

There are so many kinds of love. Many people ask about the kind of love they feel. Some equate it with physical attraction, or the so-called "love at first sight." This kind of love may only be a version of those who write love songs and love stories. Love itself is deeper than physical attraction. It is inclusive and comprehensive. Physical attraction is just one of many elements. There must be faith and confidence, common ideals and standards. There must be understanding, companionship, and yes, devotion.

True love is not confined to such flimsy ideals, for one might become attracted to another individual. You can either be great or be foolish because of love.

Love is something you can feel and see. Feeling because you aspire to love someone. Seeing because you can see the beauty that love can bring.

Liking and loving have their own respective identity. When you like someone who is close and dear to you, you admire him/her. Your admiration, however, has its limitations and boundaries-meaning it will fade and, thus, you will seek another.

There's no permanent thing in this transient world of ours. Everything has to end. The only permanent thing in this world is change itself.

Love, however, is endless-a never-ending journey; it can happen anywhere. Even the "unlovable" needs to be loved and cared for. Love have no exemption, whether you are rich or poor. You can love everyone and enjoy life through it. You can be great like high mountains and be free like birds soaring high in the blue sky. Love has no mistakes. Your feelings of it come from your heart and soul.

But love is mysterious, complicated. It is delicate and sensitive. Is it enough to say, "I know love because I have fallen in love with somebody?" Or can you say already know love because you have felt it?

Love can wait. Don't be in a hurry. It has its own way of revealing itself in the right time. Once you are in love, you must be ready to be hurt-and to be forgiven. Forgiveness is the greatest gift you can bestow on someone. Being hurt is the greatest challenge we can face in our life.

Loving, therefore, is the most important factor that we engage in as human beings. Without it, we are nothing but miserable, poor creatures.
