The uniform resource locator, or URL, is the Internet "address" that is assigned to any particular web page. It consists of a protocol, a domain name, and a file path.
http://www.mcdonalds.com/franchises.html
For the above URL:
the protocol is http://
| The 3rd level
domain name
is www. www is the most popular third level
domain name, but others may be set up by an Internet Service Provider or a personal server. (Most businesses prefer to stick with the mainstream WWW). |
The 2nd level domain is mcdonalds. It is this part of a URL that most
frequently identifies a business's name.
|
The top level domain in the above instance is .com |
The path file includes all the text found after the top level domain. In this case, it is franchises.html Path files are the ONLY part of a URL that is CASE SENSITIVE! |
There are many top level
domain
names available, including...
.com, .org., .edu, .gov, .int, .mil, .net, and
.biz.
Domain names may be registered
in three of
these (.com, .net, and .org) without
restriction; the other four have
limited purposes.
In other words... anyone may register a domain
name
with the top level domain of .com, .net or .org ... the others may only
be
registered for limited purposes only.
