General Information

Kokura Minami Senior High School is a prefectual senior high school. The school, like most senior high schools consists of three grades; first year students (一年生), second year students (二年生)and third year students (三年生).  The school is strict in many ways.  For example, all students wear uniforms and are not permitted to have part-time jobs. Kokura Minami School has an “English Course.”  This means that there is one class at every grade level that specializes in English.  Although all students are required to take English courses, the English Course students take extra classes and participate in events like the Summer Language Workshop and the yearly Speech Contest.  This English Course also brings up an interesting point.  There are two ALTs at Kokura Minami.  You will be planning and teaching with this ALT throughout the school year.  The school itself is a typical Japanese school.  It does not have central heating or central air.  A new building is in the process of being built which will contain a new library.  I have heard rumors that the building will be finished around October so I am sure that you will have a chance to enjoy this building.

                                                     Location

Kokura Minami is located in the Kokura Minami ward, which is a section of Kitakyushu city.  There are many buses that pass by the school and go to Kitakyushu’s city center, Kokura.  There is also a JR train station and a Monorail station within a five-minute walk from the school.  I did not live in the apartment that Kokura Minami offered, but I was told by my predecessor that it takes about 10-15 minutes to walk or 5-10 minutes by bike to get to school from that apartment, should it be the one they offer you.  Within a five-minute walk of the school there is a store called Daiei.  This store offers a lot, from cheap groceries, a 100 Yen store to an electronics store.  There is a Moss Burger across the street from the school.  It is a Japanese fast food chain restaurant, which is a bit pricey and slow, but very tasty.  There are a variety of other restaurants nearby.

Students

The students at Kokura Minami are quite used to having an ALT.  As I mentioned, there are three grades at the school.  You will see mostly the first year students.  You can tell what grade the students are by the colour of their slippers and gym uniforms.  The first years have red slippers, the second years have blue slippers and the third years have green.  You will find the third year students are very involved with preparing for their university entrance examinations.  Do not let this deter you from talking to them.  Of the third years, you will most likely only teach the English course students.  They are a very interesting and lively group of students.  From my experience, you will get to know your second year English course students very well because you will have several classes a week with the same students. In regular English classes (Oral Communication classes), the students can vary from being dead silent to refusing to stop talking.  Both situations can present a challenge, but as time passes, the students will get accustom to you and I am certain that you will enjoy your classes.

                                       Activities

There are many activities at Kokura Minami.  The students are very talented and dedicated to their clubs. There are clubs from Judo to selling bananas. The students and teachers take their club activities very seriously, so much that they continue even when the students are on holiday.  There are a few interesting events for you to see at the school as well. In September, there is a sports day and in February there is a marathon event. There is also a school culture festival and trips for the students.  Don't forget your camera!

Schedule

From what I have seen and experienced, you may be busier at Kokura Minami in comparison to other schools.  In one week, I teach approximately ten hours. This includes 2-second year students’ classes, 2 English course classes, 5 Oral communication classes and 1 third year students' class.  I usually have no classes on Mondays because that is the day on which you will have a business trip once a month.  Beyond classes, you will have to supervise students during cleaning time.

Cleaning

Your Responsibilities
As I mentioned, you are responsible for teaching about ten classes.  You will also be planning, writing tests and grading them.  You are Team Teaching, but you will find that this means that you will generally do most of the teaching on your own in the classroom. Until recently, I had to plan all lessons with the other ALT, but recently we have divided the work up. This means that we rotate planning lessons. This has turned out to be quite successful. It cuts down on planning time and you get to make your lessons the way you want them.   Depending on the Japanese teacher, you may have help or be told what you will be teaching.  Nishiwaki Sensei is the head of English and is quite good about discussing lessons and giving suggestions. He really has a good sense of what and how the students should learn.  As I mentioned, you are also responsible for supervising students during cleaning time.  This happens on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  The other ALT and I used to both go to each cleaning time, but recently we have divided it. My cleaning times, which most likely will become yours, are on Thursday and Friday. The school has an English club called the ESS.  You will be responsible for planning and attending their weekly meetings.  You can do this together with the other ALT or by rotating and going every other week. I have found the every other week works best. This is after school and after your workday.  Teachers tend to get extra pay for doing club activities, but this usually does not apply to ALTs. However; I did receive 2000 yen around January for my extra time. I think this was a random amount and I don't know if it is standard to get.  You will also be asked to help students prepare for speech and recitation contests and for entrance exams.  This can result in extra classes at times or in staying later after school.  You will need to help plan and work at the Summer Language Workshop in August and the Speech Contest in March.  The JTEs are experienced in planning these, so please ask for as much help and guidance as you need.  Also remember, there are two ALTs, so you are not on your own.  Kokura Minami ALTs seem to be asked to plan a workshop for the Mid Year Seminar (ALT training session) as well.  If you do not want to do this, feel free to turn it down. I personally was not interested in doing this, but the other ALT consented to doing this. It can be a lot of work, so if you are not sure that you want to do, I suggest not doing it and leaving it to a second or third year ALT.

At Kokuraminami all teachers contribute to a "Friendship Fund" each month. Everyone pays 2000 yen on pay day to the downstairs office. This fund is put towards special parties or lunches throughout the year. I found that it was somewhat unavoidable to pay. It seems like the office keeps track of what you have actually used from the friendship fund, because in January I received a 6000 yen refund from the fund.  You will be part of the second year teachers group.  The second year teachers also have a similar collection, but I opted to pay for parties as I went instead of paying a monthly fee. This was not a problem. The work parties, called Enkai, are very important and you will be asked to attend many of them over the year. Keep in mind that an Enkai costs about 4000 yen. If you go to a second party (on the same night, following the first, usually involving Karaoke), it is usually around the same price. The third party 8of the night) is often much cheaper.

You will have two supervisors. One is Murakami Sensei and one is Nakahara Sensei. Murakami Sensei will be the one who will handle almost everything. It appears to me that Nakahara Sensei is there to help Murakami Sensei, but feel free to ask him anything you want. Each morning at 8:30, there is a morning meeting in the staff room. It starts with a meeting for the entire staff and then breaks off into first, second, and third year teacher meetings. After these meetings are finished, you can go to Murakami Sensei and she will translate the meeting's important points for you.

What to Wear

You will need to wear a suit for special days.  I suggest you wear one for your first day here.  On regular days, you will see a variety of things worn.  Most male teachers wear a suit and tie to teach and female teachers wear skits, pants, blouses, sweaters, etc.  I am a teacher in Canada and I basically dress the same here.  You will need to bring a pair of shoes to wear inside the school.  You cannot wear them outside, so I suggest bringing a new pair for that purpose.  Having said that, it's ok to step outside to buy a drink in your shoes. There are no shoe police;)  I suggest that you bring both cool and warm clothes because there will be a huge difference of temperature from summer to winter.  Remember that there is no central heating or air conditioning system. Layers seem to work best.
