| Schedule | ||

From what I have seen and experienced, you may be busier at Kokura Minami in comparison to other schools. In one week, I teach approximately ten hours. This includes 2-second year students’ classes, 2 English course classes, 5 Oral communication classes and 1 third year students' class. I usually have no classes on Mondays because that is the day on which you will have a business trip once a month. Beyond classes, you will have to supervise students during cleaning time.

| Your Responsibilities | ||
|
As I mentioned, you are responsible for teaching about
ten
classes.
You will also be planning, writing tests and grading them. You are Team
Teaching, but you will find that this means that you will generally do most
of the teaching on your own in the classroom.
Until recently, I had to plan all lessons with the other ALT, but recently
we have divided the work up. This means that we rotate planning lessons.
This has turned out to be quite successful. It cuts down on planning time
and you get to make your lessons the way you want them.
Depending on the
Japanese
teacher, you may have help
or be told what you will be teaching. Nishiwaki
Sensei is the head of English and is quite good about discussing lessons and
giving suggestions. He really has a good sense of what and how the students
should learn.
As I mentioned, you are also
responsible for supervising students during cleaning time. This happens on
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
The other ALT and I used to both go to each cleaning time, but recently we
have divided it. My cleaning times, which most likely will become yours, are
on Thursday and Friday.
The school has an English club
called the ESS. You will be responsible for planning and attending their
weekly meetings.
You can do this together with the other ALT or by rotating and going every
other week. I have found the every other week works best.
This is after school and after your workday.
Teachers tend to get extra pay for doing club activities, but this usually
does not apply to ALTs. However; I did receive 2000 yen around January for
my extra time. I think this was a random amount and I don't know if it is
standard to get.
You will also be asked to help students prepare
for speech and recitation contests and for entrance exams. This can result
in extra classes at times or in staying later after school. You will need
to help plan and work at the Summer Language Workshop in August and the
Speech Contest in March. The JTEs are experienced in planning these,
so
please ask for as much help and guidance as you need. Also remember, there
are two ALTs, so you are not on your own. Kokura Minami ALTs seem to be
asked to plan a workshop for the Mid Year Seminar (ALT training session) as
well. If you do not want to do this, feel free to turn it down.
I personally was not interested in doing this, but the other ALT consented
to doing this. It can be a lot of work, so if you are not sure that you want
to do, I suggest not doing it and leaving it to a second or third year ALT. At Kokuraminami all teachers contribute to a "Friendship Fund" each month. Everyone pays 2000 yen on pay day to the downstairs office. This fund is put towards special parties or lunches throughout the year. I found that it was somewhat unavoidable to pay. It seems like the office keeps track of what you have actually used from the friendship fund, because in January I received a 6000 yen refund from the fund. You will be part of the second year teachers group. The second year teachers also have a similar collection, but I opted to pay for parties as I went instead of paying a monthly fee. This was not a problem. The work parties, called Enkai, are very important and you will be asked to attend many of them over the year. Keep in mind that an Enkai costs about 4000 yen. If you go to a second party (on the same night, following the first, usually involving Karaoke), it is usually around the same price. The third party 8of the night) is often much cheaper. You will have two supervisors. One is Murakami Sensei and one is Nakahara Sensei. Murakami Sensei will be the one who will handle almost everything. It appears to me that Nakahara Sensei is there to help Murakami Sensei, but feel free to ask him anything you want. Each morning at 8:30, there is a morning meeting in the staff room. It starts with a meeting for the entire staff and then breaks off into first, second, and third year teacher meetings. After these meetings are finished, you can go to Murakami Sensei and she will translate the meeting's important points for you.

What to Wear |
||
|
You will need to wear a suit for special days. I suggest you wear one for your first day here. On regular days, you will see a variety of things worn. Most male teachers wear a suit and tie to teach and female teachers wear skits, pants, blouses, sweaters, etc. I am a teacher in Canada and I basically dress the same here. You will need to bring a pair of shoes to wear inside the school. You cannot wear them outside, so I suggest bringing a new pair for that purpose. Having said that, it's ok to step outside to buy a drink in your shoes. There are no shoe police;) I suggest that you bring both cool and warm clothes because there will be a huge difference of temperature from summer to winter. Remember that there is no central heating or air conditioning system. Layers seem to work best. |

Second Year Teachers
|
||
|
You will be a second year teacher. This means that you will be sitting in
the second year teacher section in the staff room. These teachers will most
likely hold a welcome party for you when you arrive. I did not take
pictures of these teachers, but the names are here for you to memorize.
