John Steinbeck was
born in February 1902 in Salinas, California, which is where many of his books
take place. Steinbeck’s mother was a teacher, which is why he got so interested
in books. He went to the local high school in Monterey Bay, and in his free time
he worked on farms and ranches. Steinbeck went to Stanford University but he
never graduated. In an attempt to kick-start his career, he moved to New York in
1925. After having no luck in the career at the time, he returned to California.
Back in Salinas, Steinbeck was able to come up with a few short stories and
novels, and he created what would become his first widely known book,
Tortilla Flat written in 1935. The book was composed of a set of humorous
stories about Monterey paisanos. The Red Pony has a paisano in it; an old
man named Gitano. Today we consider The Grapes of Wrath as Steinbeck‘s
best novel, written in 1939. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962.
A quote from Steinbeck’s Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech: “Literature
is as old as speech. It grew out of human need for it and it has not changed
except to become more needed.” Steinbeck is saying how there is no difference in
how we used to speak and write, but that now we have become more adapt to it and
we need to hear it constantly, and thus we create easier ways of communicating.

All About Me
Hello. My name is Alessandro Valle, and I am a Junior at Greece Athena High School. I am 16 years of age currently, and I will be turning 17 on October 31st. I play soccer and have been playing since I was four. I am treasurer of NHS, treasurer for our class, and FBLA president. I enjoy relaxing around my house, drawing, and playing with my puppy. His name is Toby and he is a Shih-Tzu and he is brown and white. In school I take AP Chemistry, AP English 11, AP Statistics, Pre-Calculus, History, Italian IV, and Adventure Activities in PE. I plan on going on to study Chemistry and getting my PhD. So I have about 9 more years of school left and then I will be making about $80,000 my first year out. We went out on the ropes course for PE and I strapped on my harness and went up into the trees. I am somewhat afraid of heights because I do not have the safety of the ground below me, but I was able to conquer my fears and go up. I walked across and then went to lean back and fall and I did it. It was a great experience and I thoroughly enjoyed the feeling of hanging in mid-air, and I would love to do it again. I come from a large family and my great-grandparents had 8 children, 22 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, and that's just my mom's side. I am 100% Italian and I love to eat pasta and all different kinds of meat; pork chops, sausage, meatballs, rabbit, deer, lamb, and various kinds of fish. I am looking forward to my senior year here at Greece Athena High School.
