The First Summer of the Sisterhood
Main Characters

Bridget - Bridget is very outgoing and self confident. In the first book she goes to Baja, Mexico. Even though she is outgoing and brave on the outside, inside she has a deep saddness. When Bridget was 11 her mom committed suicide and she hasn't known how to communicate with her dad since.

Carmen - Carmen doesn't have a very good image of herself. In the first book she goes to North Carolina to visit her dad, and she gets a big surprise when she gets there. She has a fierce temper in this book and only ends up hurting herself the most.

Lena - Lena is shy and she doesn't like to take risks. During the first summer of the Sisterhood, she goes to Greece, where she discovers her heritage and runs into an unexpected romance.

Tibby - Tibby is a rebel and a pesimist and she gets to stay home for the first summer of the Sisterhood. Hurray. How exciting. In fact, she so bored, she decides to make a movie, a project she likes to call her 'suckamentay', to prove how lame her life is. She finds people who could be classified as losers and interviews them. Another thing about Tibby is that she's stuck working at Wallmans, where she meets Bailey, and gains an unexpected friendship.
Other Characters
Bailey - Bailey meets Tibby (after knocking herself out by accident in the deodorant aisle) and appoints herself as Tibby's assistant in making the Suckamentary.
Effie - Effie is Lena's younger sister who accompanies her to Greece. Effie is a lot more sure of herself than Lena, and helps Lena find her confidence. Effie was not in the movie.

Eric - Eric is a coach at the soccer camp Bridget goes to. She fall in love with him. Badly.

Kostos - Kostos meets Lena when she goes to Greece. Acutally, Lena's grandmother whom she's staying with introduces them. At first, Lena tries and tries to avoid Kostos, but then, after a good sister to sister talk with Effie, she gains confidence and goes to see him for a change.
Krista - Krista is Carmen's new stepsister-to-be. She has blonde hair and is perfect. Which, by the way, is no compliment in Carmen's mind.
Lydia - Krista's mother and Carmen's stepmother-to-be. They hate eachother, though neither one is willing to show it.

The Second Summer of the Sisterhood
Bridget - Since the first summer, Bridget has gotten less confident and outgoing and more sheltered. She's given up soccer and (attempted) to dye her signature blonde hair. She's also gained more weight - not becoming fat, but she is definately less athletic. She goes to Alabama in this book to visit her grandmother - on her mom's side.
Carmen - Where do we start? 1. Carmen's staying home, 2. Her mom is dating again, 3. Her mom wore The Pants on a date? Yep - that's right. She did. And worst of all - they looked good on her.
Lena - She spends several blissful nights with Kostos which ends up just making her fall harder.
Tibby - Tibby is still cynical, but not as much as before. She continues to work on movies, but different movies, not her old 'suckamentary'.

The Author: Ann Brashares
Ann Brashares grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and attended a Quaker school in Washington D.C. called Sidwell Friends. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is her first novel.

About the Sisterhood

Bridget, Carmen, Lena, and Tibby were together even before they were born. Their birthdays are within weeks of eachother, their mothers became best friends at a prenatal aerobics class. Their mothers all had the same due date, Bridget, the oldest, came a week early, and Carmen, the youngest, a week late, with Lena and Tibby in between, and ever since, they have been practically inseperable. Now - for the first time in their lives - they are separating and going different ways. The day before they have to leave, Carmen finds a pair of jeans at a thrift store, and with out trying them on, she buys them and brings them home, planning to throw them away. Then, by fate, Tibby notices the pair of jeans, soon to be The Pants, and tries them on. They fit perfectly. Then Lena tried them on, and Bridget. They know that The Pants are really magical when the fit Carmen too.
