Humpty Dumpty Revisited

©2003 Harvey H. Warwick III

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put Humpty together again
But a doctor waited nearby
And he thought he’d give it a try.
He started out by collecting the parts
And then began to use his healing arts.
Humpty Dumpty wasn’t quite dead
But he took a blow to the head
And his extremities were scattered ‘round
In a disorderly heap on the ground
And his innards were all a mess
So the doctor turned to the press
And asked for donors from five organ banks
From which he got what he needed with thanks.
Every little suture and stitch
Was performed with nary a hitch:
Feet to the ankles and legs to the waist
Each of them was reconnected with haste.
Blood transfusion then was required,
Whereupon the doctor desired
To measure blood pressure, heartbeat, and weight,
For the results might determine his fate.
He had been successful so far;
Now he had to give CPR.
Defibrillators restored to him breath
Rescuing him from an untimely death.
All his wounds were bandaged and taped;
Though, for now, the worst he’d escaped
And now was stable and no longer bled
He had a few months of rehab ahead.
Humpty Dumpty swiftly revived
And, amazed to find he survived,
Asked for the doctor to tell him what all
Had been occurring since he had his fall.
“You just barely cheated your fate
And it’s time that you lost some weight.
I’ve reassembled you now, bit by bit;
Next time, young man, you just watch where you sit!”
