Prologue: See No Evil, Speak No Evil, Hear No Evil?
Athenas Hospital Room January 7, 2000
Oh God, how long has it been? I still cant move or speak. I cant even open my eyes. But, I can hear everything. I can hear the doctors tell the nurses that the longer Im in this coma, which apparently explains my current situation, the more chance Ill never fully recoverif I recover at all. I can hear Matt quietly weeping every time he comes to see me. I can hear Vince tell his wife Oh she would have had a great career! I can hear Joanie tell Lisa and A.C. I cant believe we may never talk to her again!"
Oh God, why is this happening to me? I dont even remember why Im like this! Why cant I move, or speak, or tell my friends I love them? Why cant I wake up and tell Matt he doesnt have to cry anymore?! Am I forever doomed to hear anguished voices yet never respond?
I cant let myself fall into self-pitynot again. All twenty-eight years of my life have been a struggle. Ive had to fight for everything Ive gottenincluding my life. Do you honestly think Im going to go down easily this time? Do you? You obviously dont know me very well. Every day of my life has been a test, and you know what? IVE PASSED EVERY DAMN ONE OF THEM! This is no different. It wont be longmark my words. Athena Kaye Shannon will not die!
Im tiredmy mind is tired. I will sleep for now. Maybe the sleep will help me remember what happened to put me in this coma and take away my sight, speech and movement. Maybe the sleep will fade the memories, those other memories I so desperately want to forget. Theres so much evil in the worldjust let me forget. I doubt it, though. You always remember what you dont want to. The mind never forgets
Part 1: Respect Your Elders
Shannon Estate, Sonoma, California 1980.
God dammit! Get in the fucking car! NOW! Johnny Shannon screamed at his wife, for a third time.
Im sorry Johnny, Im sorry, Celia Shannon said as she grabbed her purse from the bureau. She ran out to the front of the house, where an enraged Johnny waited. Averting her eyes from Johnnys face, Celia cowed and nodded. I couldnt find my keys.
I swear to God, if I dont get to the convenience store before it closes, Ill give you something to be sorry about. He pushed past her and headed to the front door, muttering, stupid bitch. Looking over his shoulder, he spied two of his three children anxiously watching their parents. Aaron, youre in charge. Athena, you mind your brother.
The eight-year-old looked at her father as tears formed in her eyes. Cant I go with you? I dont wanna stay here! Please? She looked at her fifteen-year-old brother with a look of horror. Daddy! Please?
Johnny wiped his hand over his face, looked at his watch and cursed. Son of a bitch! I dont have time for this! Athena, what did I tell you last time? Dont whine. You will stay here and mind your brother.
Crying, Athena pleaded, But Dad!
If I here one more word, Johnny raised his hand, threatening to strike the little girl. You better not cause trouble. If I hear that you gave Aaron any trouble, that you disobeyed him, Ill get the belt! Do you want that? DO YOU!
Shaking, with eyes as wide as saucers, Athena shook her head and replied, No Daddy. Please, not the belt!
THEN MIND YOUR BROTHER! Johnny pushed Celia through the door as he walked out of the house. From the outside, Johnnys voice could be heard screaming at Celia. Drive, dammit! NOW!
Once the tires could be heard screeching away from the driveway, Aaron grabbed Athenas arm and turned her to face him. You heard what Dad said, Athena Kaye. You have to mind whatever I say. He started to rub her face with his thumb. EVERYTHING I say. Athenas face widened. She knew what was coming next. It always happened when mom and dad left. Each time, she would try to hide, but eventually he found her. But, try she did anyway. Maybe this time would be different. She bit down on Aarons arm and ran away.
The Shannon Estate had twenty-five rooms, and Athena knew all the hiding places throughout the immense structure. Unfortunately, so did Aaron. Athena ran into the recreation room, hiding in the small cabinet inside the entertainment center. Please God, dont let him find me. Please!
Praying to God wont help, Athena. Aaron entered the recreation room, still rubbing the bite on his arm. If you dont get out here now, Im gonna tell Dad that you bit me. Hes gonna beat you so you cant sit down for three days. So, ask yourself, which is worse? Dads belt, or me? Knowing the answer, Athena resigned herself to her fate and crawled out of the entertainment center. I thought so. Now get over here.
Athena slowly walked over to her brother, trying to keep the vomit from rising into her throat. Why me?, she thought. Oh, please just let him get this over with. Just take me away from the pain! By the time Athena reached her brother, his pants were already down.
Smiling, he grabbed the top of her head and forced Athena to him. You know what to do! And, do it right this time! Or Ill tell Dad about the bite. Sobbing, she nodded her head and complied with Aarons request. Laughing, Aaron hurled insult after insult at his frightened little sister. Youre gonna be no good to anyone, Athena. Remember that. You wont be worth anything. Grabbing her hair, he shook her. Youre not doing it right! Fix it! Throughout the empty house, heavy sobbing and maniacal laughter is all that could be heard.
----------------------------
Matt Bloom sat in the same position he always did when he visited Athena. Right by her bedside, her hand in between both of his. Please wake up.
Strange mutterings came from Athenas mouth, yet she did not move. No, AaronI dont wanna do thatlet me go.youre hurting me. Then as quickly as they began, the mutterings stopped.
Matt jumped from his seated position and yelled for the doctor. Get in here! She just talked! Dr. Stevens ran into the room. He looked at Athena and then turned his head to the brainwave monitor.
Prince Albert, er, Mr. Bloom, I wish I could give you better news. I wish I could say shes on her way to waking up. But, I cant tell you that for sure. Many times, comatose patients live in the brain, reliving all the memories stored there. I am almost positive the mutterings you heard were just unconscious reactions to the movie playing in her mind.
Oh. I was so sure. The doctor left and Matt resumed his position at Athenas side. What happened to you, Athena?
As Matt asked that question, the mutterings began for a second time. Mom, why are we at the Monterrey house? We only come here for summer. And again, they ended. The brainwave monitor spiked as Athena again revisited her past.
Part 2: Guns Dont Kill People, People Kill People
Summer House, Monterrey, CA 1988
Athena walked down the path of the beach house out onto the street. The sixteen-year-old put her headphones on and took off on a brisk run through some of the scenic ocean roads of Monterrey, California. Drinking in the sights shed remembered throughout her childhood, she really felt at home at peace during the summer. The rest of the years torment was some how bearable because she knew shed be here every June. Her twenty-three-year-old brother, Aaron, was across the country going to film school in New York City. Dumbass will probably end up producing pornos, she thought.
About a mile into her run, she spotted someone up aheadanother runner. Damn, she said to herself, that girls running fast as hell. Not to be outdone, Athena picked up the pace, deciding to try to catch up with this new face. As Athena gained ground, the unknown runner looked back and saw her. She decided to accept the silent challenge and again picked up speed. The two runners kept the breakneck pace for three more miles before they started tiring. The unknown runner stopped first, her chest heaving, trying to suck in air. Once Athena caught up with her, she stopped and caught her breath. After a couple of minutes, the both girls were rested enough to talk.
Athena broke the ice first. Hi! Im Athena Shannon. I saw you running up ahead and figured Id challenge myself to catch up.
Nice to meet you Shannon, Im LisaLisa Moretti. You have some damn good legs on you. Not too many people can keep a steady pace with me. Next time, well start at the same time and really see who would win. Lisa extended her hand to Athena and they shook.
Athena continued the conversation. So, do you live in Monterrey?
Im here with my cousins for the summer. They live here. Im just visiting. What about you?
Im here with my folks for the summer. My parents bought a house right around the place where I started running. Ive been coming here ever since I can remember.
Its so beautiful here, dont you think? I just loving running up and down the coastline.
Me too.
So, Athena, how old are you?
Im sixteen, but I feel like Im twenty-five. Ha ha. What about you?
Im 21.
Wow. I wish I was that age. Id be able to be on my own.
Be careful what you wish for, Athena. Youll be my age soon enough. Enjoy being a teenagerits the best time of your life.
Upon hearing Lisas words, Athena mumbled to herself, Easy for you to say.
Lisa asked, What did you say?
Oh nothing. I just said what do you do during the day?
Well, dont laugh. Im actually training to become a professional wrestler!
Athenas eyes widened. A professional wrestler?! You mean, youre into all that fake stuff? No way. Visibly irritated, Lisa frowned. Athena apologized. Oh, Im sorry, Lisa. I didnt mean to degrade what you do. Its just surprising to hear of women getting involved in such a male-driven sport. What made you decide to do it?
I dont know really. I think it must have been in the early 1980s. I remember my dad taking my brothers to a wrestling show and I begged him to let me go, too. It was a show, God around, 1980, maybe? Anyway, from the moment the show started, I was hooked. Seeing Superstar Billy Graham, Bruno Sammartino, and Bob Backlundoh man, it was awesome! From then on, my brothers and I would wrestle each other in the backyard. After high school, I just decided that I wanted to do it for a living. Unfortunately, Im still trying to break into the big time. Im training at a school in Los Angeles and I wrestle part-time for an independent federation. The main ones, though, are the WWF and the NWA.
Wow. Thats amazing. Are there many women wrestlers?
Lisa nodded her head. Actually the womens side is growing. Obviously, there arent as many women wrestlers as there are men, but its growing none the less. Right now, the hottest women are Rockin Robin, Sherri Martel, Velvet McIntyre, and the Fabulous Moolah. Man, I envy them. She looked at her watch and realized it was getting late. Then, an idea struck her. Hey, Athena. Why dont you come with my cousins and I tonight? The WWF has a show at the Monterrey Civic Complex at 8:00pm. Athena looked at Lisa skeptically. Oh come on. Itll be great, I swear. Just trust me.
Athena smiled and nodded her head enthusiastically. Ok. I would like to see whats so great about this wrestling stuff.
Why dont I pick you up at about 6:30. I want to get there early.
Ok. Great. Athena told Lisa her address, said goodbye and ran to the house. Quickly, she took a shower, put on some jeans and a T-shirt, and blowdried her hair. After styling and putting on makeup. She walked down the hall to the living room. Mom. I met a friend and Im going to the Civic Complex with her.
Who is this friend?
Oh just someone, a girl, I met while running earlier today. She wants me to go with her to a sports show at the Civic Complex.
Fine. But dont be too late. You know how your father gets when you come home late.
Feeling a knot form in her stomach, Athena nodded. I know, I know. I should be home by 11:00pm. Ill call if Im going to be later than that.
Ok. Have fun. Athena walked out of the house just as Lisa and her cousins pulled up into the driveway. Athena ran to the car and got in the passenger side, next to Lisa, who was the driver. Ok, lets go. I wanna know whats so cool about this wrestling stuff.
Athena, Lisa, and her cousins drove off in the direction of the Civic Complex. Once there, the four women found their seats and absorbed the sights. The WWF show included Andre the Giant vs. Hulk Hogan, Demolition vs. Strike Force, and Ultimate Warrior vs. Honky Tonk Man. After the show, the four headed out to the car.
Well, Athena? How did you like it?
Wow. That was so much fun! It was amazing. I can see why you like it so much. Athena looked at Lisa and saw the I told you so look on her face.
Told ya, kid. Now you know why I want to be a part of it.
Yeah. I know youll do it. You look like the type of person that could do it.
Thanks. Lisa looked at her watch and cursed. Shit. We gotta get you home. Its almost 11:00pm. The four got in the car and sped off toward Athenas house. Once they reached house, Lisa pulled in the driveway and let Athena out.
Thanks so much, Lisa. I had a great time.
Youre welcome, Athena. Hey, next time I see you, maybe I can take you down to see where I train.
Id like that. She waved as Lisa began backing out of the driveway. See you around. Athena walked in the house and felt an eerie feeling. Oh God. I dont like the looks of things. She walked through the living room, horrified at the sight of broken glasses, dishes, and vases. Oh fuck. Athena ran to the back of the house, and then she heard itthe yelling.
You fucking bitch! Didnt I tell you to stay out of my business! Athena heard a scream as her dad backhanded her mom in the face. Ive told you a thousand times not to ask questions! Its none of your business what I do. Again, he hit her mother, this time with his fist. Another scream. It wont help you to scream, Celia.
Shielding her face, Celia screamed, How dare you say its none of my business! Im your wife! How am I supposed to react that youre cheating on me!
Dont react at all! If you were a better wife, I wouldnt have to fuck someone else!
If I were a better wife? Ive done everything you say, taken all your shit. Ive stayed with you for years, even though I know I should have left you years ago.
Just shut the fuck up Celia. You know no one would have a used piece of shit like you, anyway. You know if you leave me, youll be left with nothing.
Fuck you, Johnny. Celia pushed Johnny with all her might and he crashed into the bureau.
Rising, Johnny smiled evilly. Oh you just signed your death certificate, bitch! Johnny grabbed the poker near the fireplace and loomed over Celia. She tried to scramble out of the way, but Johnny kicked her in the ribs. You arent going anywhere you fucking slut! He reared his arm back and then swung forward, thrusting the metal length of the poker across her back. Celia wailed. Shut up, cunt! Shut the fuck up! He again struck the metal handle across her back. Fuck you, Johnny? Huh? Ill show you who not to fuck with, you worthless bitch! Johnny again wailed the back of Celia. Then, without warning, he began kicking her repeatedly in the ribs. Do you hear the cracking? Huh? Do you hear your ribs caving in you fucking slut? Celia began coughing up blood, floating in and out of consciousness.
Outside the room, Athena cried. I hate him, I hate him, I hate him, she said to herself. Oh God, hes gonna kill her. That fucking bastard! Just then, she remembered the object she found in the hidden compartment in the living room fireplace. Its the only way to stop him. I cant let him kill mom. She ran to the living room, slid open the fireplace compartment and withdrew the object. Racing toward the back room, she felt her stomach heave and her heart pump.
------------------------------------
Athena began mumbling again. Stop, dad. Stop! Youre killing her! No!
Matt Bloom awakened at the sound of her voice. He grasped her hand, and whispered to her. Its ok, Athena. Its ok. Just calm down. Everything is going to be all right. As if she heard him, the mumbling stopped.
------------------------------------
Athena stopped at the door of her parents bedroom. She could still hear her dad beating her mother. How does that feel! Bitch! Answer me! Answer me! Fucking slut! Johnny again started kicking a now unconscious Celia. Feeling the anger rise like never before, Athena burst in the bedroom, pointing a loaded gun at her father.
Stop it, Dad! Youre killing her! Just fucking stop it! Johnny turned around, enraged.
Get out of here, Athena. Just leave now, and I wont do the same thing to you.
Standing her ground, Athena refused. NO! Im not leaving until you stop beating mom, you asshole!
What did you call me, you ungrateful little bitch! He stepped on Celias battered leg and lunged toward Athena. Unconsciously, Athena squeezed the guns trigger and fired a shot into Johnnys shoulder. Falling to the floor and holding his shoulder, Johnny screamed in rage. Youre dead you little bitch! I should have killed you a long time ago! Johnny stumbled, trying to get up.
Maybe you shouldve, but you didnt Dad. Youre not gonna hurt mom or me ever again. Just then, Johnny grabbed the fireplace poker and tried striking Celia in the head, this time with the pointed end.
Say goodbye to your mother, Athena. Shes going to hell! Johnny raised his hand, poised to bear the poker down on Celia. Before he could force his arm downward, a bullet pierced his chest. The poker fell out of his hand, as he grabbed his chest. You fucking cunt! Johnny futilely tried to lunge toward Athena, but couldnt. She pulled the trigger a third time, the bullet entering his neck. Immediately, Johnny fell to the floor in a crumpled mess, blood pooling around him.
Without thinking, Athena ran to her mother, and tried waking her. Mom! Mom! Wake up! MOM! Not moving, Athena began to cry. She ran to the phone and dialed 911. Help! My moms unconscious and my dads been shot! Please get here now!
------------------------------
Matt felt pressure on his hand and opened his eyes. He could see the brainwave monitor reacting feverishly. Again, he could barely hear Athenas mumbling. Mom! Please wake up! Please! Oh God, dont die! A second time, Matt felt pressure on his hand. He looked down and saw Athenas hand move ever-so-slightly, trying to squeeze Matts hand. Doctor! Shes moving! Get in here, quick!
The doctor ran into the hospital room and observed Athenas movement. With a half-smile on his face he told Matt, Mr. Bloom, this could be good news. It looks as if Athena is starting to have some physical reactions to whatever shes remembering in her mind. While I cant say for sure, this could be the first step to her regaining consciousness. As long as she keeps even slightly moving, its a good sign.
Matt felt his heart swell and thanked the doctor. Resuming his position at the side of Athenas bed, he silently thanked God. Just let her keep moving. He looked at Athena and smiled. Whatever youre thinking, Athena. Just keep thinking it. Whatevers spinning in that mind of yours, just let it spin.
Part 3: The Stranglehold on Life, Released
Tampa, FL 1990
Fuck, Athena! Hurry your ass up! We only have an hour to get there, do this shit, and get back. Turn that shit off! The man walked to the television set and turned it off, casting a disapproving glare at Athena.
Hey! What the hellI was watching that! Athena rose from her seat and pushed past the man. Sean, you need to learn some fucking manners! She grabbed her gloves and bag and headed out the door, Sean quickly following.
And you need to learn focus. We have to get this done, not sit around watching TV. I dont understand why you watch that wrestling shit anyway, Sean said, locking the apartment door and walking toward the car.
Because it relaxes me. Sometimes I like to watch other people beat the hell out of each other rather than always participating in it myself. Sean laughed, shook his head, and got in the car. Athena entered the car and pulled out a map. All right, lets do this shit. I gotta be back soon to check on my mom. I dont think shes doing so well. All depressed and shit.
Well, so are you. I can tell.
Yeah, so what. I just dont let it stop me. I just channel that negative energy into my hobbies. And, if I do say so myself, I have become quite skilled at it. Either Im a very good student, or youre a very good teacher. Athena leaned over and kissed Sean on the forehead.
Sean again laughed, but his tone quickly turned serious. Well soon see how skilled you are. This isnt going to be easy.
Dont you think I know that? I wouldnt be trying something so large so soon if things had been different. Since my dad died, the creditors have taken almost everything from us. My mom, a housewife for most of her adult life, cant get a job above minimum wage. Weve gone from a veritable mansion in Sacramento to a shithole roach-infested apartment in fucking Tampa. All she does is sit there, in the apartment, and cry. Thats half the reason I dont come home a lot. When I do, I just end up trying to console her, or she gets me depressed and we both drown our sorrows in a bottle of Jack. Athena wipes away a stray tear sliding down her cheek. Steeling herself, Athena continued, I just want to kick start our livesmostly hers, though. I want to give her a cushion so she can build her skills up without having to worry about living expenses. I can deal with whatevers in front of me, but I know she cant.
Sean, listening intently, replied, You love your mom a lot, huh?
Yeah. Weve both been through a lot.
Athena, youre only 18how much can you really have gone through?
Nevermind that. Just know that Ive gone through things most never go through. Leave it at that.
Sean rolled his eyes, and agreed. Fine, but dont you think your mother will be pissed when she finds out how youre providing her financial freedom?
She doesnt have to know. Ill just tell her I got a job after school. Shell believe meshe has no reason not to.
How do you hang with me, do what we do, and still go to school every day.
I dont know, I just do. For some reason, education is important to me. I dont want to end up like my mom, a woman with no skills who has to rely on a husband to provide everything. I am not going to fucking rely on anyoneeverything I have or do will be gotten or done by me and no one else.
Okjust wondering. Sean pulled up to the side street behind the building and stopped the car. Were here. This is the back door to the store. Right inside there is the safe. I know they have the last two days deposits still in the safe. Since its Sunday night, the bank wont pick up until the morning. With weekend receipts, the cash in those deposits should be close to $10,000.
Greatlets hurry up and get going. Athena and Sean quietly exit the car, put their gloves on and cover their faces. Athena pulls a small case containing lock picks out of her pocket. Taking two of them, Athena quickly went to work on the department stores back door. Within twenty seconds, the door was open with Sean and Athena slipping quietly inside the store.
Okthe safe is over there, to the left of the big desk. Sean motioned for Athena to head towards the safe. She crouched down beside the safes dial, pulled a stethoscope from her small backpack and listened as she turned the dial. Two minutes later, the safe was open revealing the weekend deposits. Sean, seeing the safe open ran to help her gather the money. Unbeknownst to him, he triggered a silent alarm, setting off a signal to the Tampa Police Department.
Hurry, Sean, I dont want to take chances. Lets get out of here. Athena zipped up the small backpack while Sean checked outside the door, making sure the coast was clear. Just as Sean and Athena entered their car, the wailing of sirens reached their ears. FUCK! I dont believe this. What the hell? Something must have been triggered. DAMMIT!
Sean got out of the car, looked at Athena and said, Get out of here! Just floor it!
Wide-eyed, Athena replied, What?! Im not going to leave you here. Get in the fucking car, Sean.
Shaking his head, Sean responded, Dont worry about me, Athena. Just get the fuck out of here. Youre only 18, you shouldnt spend your life behind bars. Ive been there, and I can handle myself. Youre too youngjust go! Get to your moms. NOW!
Crying, Athena nodded her head. Ok. Thank you SeanIll come see you as soon as I can. Thank you for everything. She kissed him and sped off, careful not to leave tire marks on the street. Looking at her rear-view mirror, she watched as the cops approached Sean. They got out of their vehicles, surrounding Sean. All of a sudden, Athenas heart nearly stopped as she watched Sean pull a gun out of his pants. Before he had a chance to aim it, the police opened fire, shooting Sean in the chest four times. In an instance, he collapsed to the ground, the gun falling away as he hit.
SEAN!! OH MY GOD!! NOOOOOOOOO!!, Athena cried. I cant believe he did that. Oh God, Sean, why? Why did you do that? As she drove she remembered a conversation they had while they practiced shooting. Sean had told her that he wanted out of the life he had, but he didnt know if he could start again. Oh God, Seanif I had known this is what you meant. She wiped her tear-drenched face on her shirt. She looked up at the sky and sighed. God, he made mistakes, but please take care of him.
Thirty minutes later, Athena arrived at Seans place, removed all her belongings and left his car in the apartment complex. Athena quickly walked the five blocks to her and her moms apartment, careful not to look conspicuous. She walked up the three flights of stairs to her apartment, dodging sleeping bums and drug users. Once she arrived at her door, she realized she left her keys inside. Mom! Let me in, I forgot my keys. No answer. Mom! Its Athena! I forgot my keys! Let me in! Still no answer. She banged on the door for a few seconds and waited. Again, no answer. Fine, Ill just have to let myself in. Just as she had at the store, Athena picked the lock and opened the door. Walking in, she shouted, Mom! Hello, Mom! Im home! Why didnt you let me in! Just as at the door, there was no answer. Knowing her mom rarely left the apartment, Athena felt a sense of dread wash over her. Where the hell is she?
Athena walked into her moms bedroom and saw no sign of herjust some clothes thrown on the bed and an empty bottle of cheap vodka on the floor. Fuckwhere the hell is she? Maybe she did go out. Looking around, she saw a note folded on her dresser. Upon closer look, she noticed it was addressed to her. Opening it, she began reading. Immediately, Athena turned white. Athena read the letter aloud.
My dearest Athena. Im sorry for everything youve had to go through in your young life. In my heart of hearts I wish things could have been better. Maybe if I had done things different or stood up to your father, we wouldnt be where we are now. I dont know what to do now, Athena. Its been two years since your fathers death and I feel worse than I did before. I want better things for you. I hope you understand why I did this, Athena. You have a chance for a better life, especially without having to care for me. With the way I was going, I probably wouldve died in a few years anyway. Please dont hate meI just want to be released from the stranglehold life has on me. Please understand. I love you, Athena. Mom.
Tears streaming down her face, Athena ran to the bathroom. Bursting through the door, she let out a piercing scream. OH MY GOD!! MOM!! NOOOOOOOOOO!! Sprawled out in the bathtub was Celia Shannons lifeless body, blood surrounding her, still slightly oozing from the deep slashes in her wrists.
-----------------------------------
Matt Bloom felt his arm wrench from its resting place, his ears assaulted by a thunderous scream. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! MOM, NOOOOOOO!! I was going to help you!! GOD NO!!!!!!!!!!! Matts eyes sprang open to see Athena sitting upright, bellowing and crying. MOM!!!! WHY?!!!!!!! Oh God! Athena opened her eyes to see Matt staring back at her. Angry, Athena shouted, Who the fuck are you and where the hell is my mom!
