SEED PLANTING
By Helen De Bruin

All that I do in our garden, I like to record, as *if* all turns out fine ~ I have a record of what was done.  I can learn from it, or repeat it (I LOVE to repeat it! Ha!)  Here is a list of seeds I planted last year ~ Autumn in Australia and Mid-Spring in the USA.

SEEDS PLANTED 15 APRIL 2000

SHALLOTS

Salad onion, straight leaf.  Sow Autumn to spring.  Rows 20-30cm space 2-3cm Depth 0.5cm

COLLARDS CHAMPION

Smooth-leaved large greens, high in vitamins A and C.  Cold hardy.  Sow Autumn

CAULIFLOWER PHENOMINAL EARLY

Likes well-drained soil with near neutral pH and sunny spot.  Keep well watered.  Will cross-pollinate with other Brassicas.  Sow late summer, autumn.

Snow white heads protected by large leaves.  Rows 60-100cm  Space 45-60cm  Depth 0.4-0.6cm.

CELERY SOUTH AUSTRALIAN WHITE

The secret to fresh crisp stalks is plenty of manure and water.  Blanch stalks with mulch or cardboard tubes.  Pick stems as required.  Used medicinally by ancient Greeks, developed in the 16th century in Fance.  Prefers cool conditions. Sow in spring and Autumn.

Tall and vigorous.  Rows 40-60cm.  Space 15-30cm Depth 0.1-0.2cm

CABBAGE SUGARLOAF

Likes rich well drained soil ad sunny position.  Will cross pollinate with other Brassicas.  Possibly the most ancient of todays vegetables.  Sow end of summer to winter, mature plants tolerate frost.
Large, conical shaped, sweet flavour, also good to use as a sweet tender salad green.  Sow end of summer to winter, also after last frost.  Matures 60-70 days.  Rows 40-60cm  Space 20-40cm  Depth 0.5-1cm

SILVERBEET FORDHOOK GIANT

Sow anytime outside frost, also suffers in hot, dry times.  Large dark green, crinkled leaves 75cm with thick white stalks, popular variety, tender with fine flavour.  50-60 days.  Rows 50-60cm  Space 15-30cm  Depth 1-1.5cm.
