| CANDIDIASIS Candida albicans is a type of parasitic yeastlike fungus that lives in the intestines (as well as the genital tract, mouth, esophagus, and throat). Normally, this fungus lives in harmony with other bacteria and yeasts in the body. Sometimes, however, the candida can multiply, and this weakens the immune system causing an infection known as candidiasis. The fungus can travel through the bloodstream to many and varied parts of the body. The symptoms of candidiasis can include: ~ constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headaches, bad breath, rectal itching, foggy brain, mood swings, canker sores, persistent heartburn, muscle and joint pain, sore throat, flu-like symptoms, severe itching, white spots on the tongue and in the mouth, extreme fatigue, kidney and bladder infections, arthritis, depression, adrenal problems and even diabetes. The symptoms of candidiasis worsen when: ~ one is exposed to damp, mouldy places, and after consumption of foods containing sugar and/ or yeast. Because of these many and varied symptoms, this disorder is often misdiagnosed, however, a simple blood test which reveals the quantity of candida in the blood stream can offer a correct diagnosis. Some good nutrient supplements to assist in the treatment of candidiasis are: Essential fatty acids, taken as directed on the label ~ which are important in healing and preventing the fungus from destroying cells. Acidophilus, as directed on label and taken on an empty stomach ~ this fights the candida infection and restores the 'good flora' in the gut. Take a nondairy formula. Caprylic acid, as directed on label ~ this is an antifungal agent that destroys the candida organism. Garlic (Kyolic), 2 capsules, 3 times daily ~ a natural antibiotic which kills the infecting organism. For information on an anti-candida diet, please see 'anti-candida diet' under 'Recipes'. |
