The History of Isosceles Triangles
Isosceles is a Greek word that means equal legs. No one is for sure when or who named isosceles triangles although the Greeks get most of the credit because of their early mathmatical skills and they also named many other triangles. The Egyptians unknowingly used isosceles triangles to make the sides of some of their pyramids. Any Pyramid with flat sides (except for a cone) has isosceles triangles for the sides.
Isosceles triangles are also used in art. Painting in perspective involves isosceles triangles because the artist makes the two sides (legs) meet at one point, so usually the triangle formed is isosceles. Perspective did not become popular in art until the fifteenth century. Perspective is a technique in painting that gives objects the appearance of depth and distance.
