Time Period During the 1880s, when the book was published many events occurred throughout the United States. The events had a huge effect because they changed United States. An example was when slavery was over because of the 13th Amendment in 1865. Men were able to vote except black men. Even though all men were equal black people were threaded badly. They had to be segregated from white people in the 1880s. In 1881 a man named Charles Guitean assassinated the United States President James Garfield. He killed him because James Garfield wouldn�t give him a government job. After the presidents death the vice president became the United States President. Chester A. Arthur, the new president, passed the Penoleta Act in 1883, that stated that people would obtain jobs by skill, ability and knowledge than by political party. Many immigrants were in the United States by this time period. That caused racial discrimination in the United States. There were also nativism people that objected the immigrants. In 1882,the Chinese Exclusion Act passed, that prohibited Chinese from coming to the United States. In 1884 Mark Twain published the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. |
