Should Huck Finn be banned?Author: Cameron Licht (---.125-193.ensynch.com)Date: 04-23-04 16:33Huck Finn is one of the best novels written. not only does it teach good morals but Twain uses it as a vessel to show the end of romanticism in novels. Many people believe that Twains use of a racial slur shows his racism and that the book should be banned. Not only does Twain hate racism but he uses the language only because it was used during that period in time. As i have mentioned before this racial term has appeared in many songs yet these have never been challenged. Why not ban the songs that use racial terms or involve @!#$ or drugs? If you were to ban anything involving racial language, @!#$, violence, or drugs that would leave nothing to listne to or read. If anyone has an opposing argument please respond.

He is not merely SYMBOLIC of the American Dream he CREATES it as a literary panash...he is the character who has idealism and hope; a teacher without rant and the SOUL of the novel...it is his VOYAGE to discovery (as well as that of Huck) that is regarded as THE precise vision of the book...his search and desire is that of EVERYMAN thus he stands not just for the ultimate good BUT represents same...

The Great American NovelAuthor: Muck Twang (209.201.25.---)Date: 11-13-03 09:21Huck Finn is arguablly the "GAN"...but "why" is this even a valid argument ? For one thing the book spans a timeframe that was pivotal in American History...there probably wasn't anything so devisive as the Abolition of slavery and thus the backdrop for the book is this very thing...also the trip downriver...classic...the hero seeking a home (Homer and the ODYSSEY) and the microcosm of American Culture seen through the diverse eyes of Huck and Jim...Twain was and still remains the most salient of social thinkers and it is a shame that his genuis will go by the wayside via this Internet pap and the fact that sheeple just follow in whatever direction the winds may blow...

It is little wonder that Mr. Samuel Clemens, otherwise Mark Twain, resorted to real or mock lawsuits, as may be, to restrain some real or imaginary selling of "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" as a means of advertising that extraordinarily senseless publication. Before the work is disposed of, Mr. Mark Twain will probably have to resort to law to compel some to sell it by any sort of bribery or corruption. It is doubtful if the edition could be disposed of to people of average intellect at anything short of the point of the bayonet. This publication rejoices in two frontispieces, of which the one is supposed to be a faithful portrait of Huckleberry Finn, and the other an engraving of the classic features of Mr. Mark Twain as seen in the bust made by Karl Gerhardt. The taste of this gratuitous presentation is as bad as is the book itself, which is an extreme statement. Mr. Clemens has contributed some humorous literature that is excellent and will hold its place, but his Huckleberry Finn appears to be singularly flat, stale and unprofitable. The book is sold by subscription

Re: The Great American NovelAuthor: noota (---.ap.plala.or.jp)Date: 11-17-03 08:26It was good to take your interesting message on " Huck Finn " .As you say , at the time of Mark Twain there was greatly controvercial ,sometimes adverse debate ,sometimes the subject of serious critical .but today "The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn " is accepted as the most important novel of the American ninteen century .As far as I know , for one thing , Twain tells us different problems facing to people in nineteen century . For example , American modern civilization , slavery , moral and freedom . "The raft is a symbol of freedom , which is very meaningful for Huck and Jim . Anyway this great book show us how many issures in American society (19c) areweaven into this adveturous story skillfully and humorously .And for those interested in books , it is a lot of fun , at every level .One thing I would like to ask you is "Why do you think Twain's genuis will go by the wayside via this Internet pap ? "You mean his talent can be ignored or rejected through this forum ?I hope your quick response .Thank you .
