Inspired by a quote from Lincoln Steffens, "The best picture has not yet been painted; the greatest poem is still unsung; the mightiest novel remains to be written; the divinest music has not been conceived even by Bach. In science, probably ninety-nine percent of the knowable has not yet been discovered."
The Rules of the Game
by Helen Farran

The world's best picture has not yet been painted
The most profound epic is still unsung
The ladder to heaven is arching above me
I sit contemplating on its bottom most rung.

The mightiest novel waits to be written
The sweetest song has yet to be sung
Like a cat poised to spring on the mouse are my words
Waiting to spill from the tip of my tongue

Somewhere, someone will bring forth these diamonds
The muses will gather, ideas will flow
The seeds of wondrous things have been planted
From the magical depths of our conscience they'll grow.

We human beings are special, unique
Our presence is destined our purpose unknown
But we all know the message that is whispered in dreams
Of an answer that is out there, we are not alone.

I know you have felt it, been caught unaware
You glimpse it in laughter and often in tears
Deep in the night you wake without warning
We all have some doubts, we all have our fears

It's not just a feeling, it isn't just knowing
The search for meaning seems endless and long
But each day we sense it, we live it, we breathe it
Were here, were alive, we
are, we belong.

Were part of a pattern, a huge web of life
Each person, each thought, each moment is real
Although theyre illusions, although theyre in code
You cant learn the message if you dont learn to feel.

And feeling is everything, feeling is life,
Through feelings we learn what we most need to know
You cant learn the lessons without falling down
And you cant get wiser if you dont want to grow

Are the needs of the many outweighed by the few?
Is the sum of the parts more than the whole?
Are you really you?  Am I really me?
Or are we all actors just playing our roles?

So if you are wondering why you are here
I am too and I think that its part of the game
The rules say we have to forget who we were
We play and we play till we learn were the same.
