The Biology Book

Ink, black, yellow, blue and red
sprawled over the page
organised into diagrams and cross-sections

My stomach, your bladde,
all reduced to pictures with lines protruding
like cocktail sticks.

My brain, described on page 568,
is getting a cramp, trying its hardest
to catch the meaning of these long, elusive terms.

Why overwhelm my hippocampus with all this
when whether I learn it or not
my heart will continue with its cardiac cycle.
