A Lesson in Self-Confidence

By HeyJude

This is a true story.  Although it took place years ago, it made such an impression on me that I never forgot it.

One morning at the office, a middle-aged co-worker arrived at  the office in her usual manner.  She walked with complete confidence, holding her head up high, cheerfully greeting everyone along the way from the department director to the janitor.  When she arrived at her work station, she seemed to just take command of it like she was going to conquer the day.  She exhibited what I would call a high level of self-confidence.

But you know what else?  Her appearance was awful.  Her hair is naturally blah and was unruly that day.  Her white cotton blouse looked like it had just come out of a dryer after sitting there all night... it was all crumpled.  Her face is naturally homely and she wore no makeup to help it.   She was not a fast worker, and some of her work was of unacceptable quality.  Although I got a kick out of this woman and her quirky ways, most people did not take her seriously at all.

Here is a woman who, it would seem to everyone else, had no reason to feel confident.  Yet, she had no clue of that and obviously felt a high degree of self-confidence.   So what is the lesson we can learn from this woman?  Here's what I concluded from observing her that morning...

...It's not how others view you that determines your level of self-confidence.  It's how you view yourself.

Think about it.   Have you ever known someone who seems to have so much going for them but they still lack self-esteem?  That is because the positive way others may view the person does not overcome the negative way the person feels about him/herself.

What a lesson that was for anyone observant enough to see what this woman unknowingly had demonstrated!
