Introduction To The Breed
Labrador retrievers have come a long way in a relatively short time. Today the breed ranks among the top five for the number of litters registered with the American Kennel Club. Because Labrador retrievers are such well-rounded dogs, popular as house pets, hunting, working, rescue, and show dogs.
Breed Standards
The appearance of the dog should be that of a strongly built, short-coupled, very active dog. He should be fairly wide over the loins, with strong and muscular hind quarters. The coat should be close, short, dense, and free from feather.
Personality
Although seldom uncontrollable or unruly, a Labrador is a lively animal with a great zest for life. Its natural curiosity and playfulness will inevitably lead it into various forms of "trouble". This provides much enjoyment for its young masters and owners. Not good guard dogs, the Labrador would rather smother intruders with licks and kisses than attack them. They are also very "oral" learners and go through a prolonged "chewing period" as puppies. But they are also very smart dogs that learn quickly and understand commands efficiently.
