Experience

Page designer, 1999-present, The Indianapolis Star.
My deadline responsibilities have included daily and Sunday Page One design; monthly special sections such as the Day in the Life series; daily Metro & State (formerly City & State); daily and Sunday Business; and occasional features and sports sections. As a page designer, I am responsible not only for the page’s public presentation but for behind-the-scenes planning and communication across newsroom departments. I am occasionally expected to contribute headline-writing and copy- and proof-editing. I also attend the daily news meetings.

Newsroom systems administrator, 2005-present, The Indianapolis Star.
Concurrent with my page-design responsibilities, I have been one of three people in charge of upgrading our CCI database publishing system. My chief responsibility has been development and maintenance of design-related programs and databases.

Copy editor, 1997-98, 1995, The Indianapolis Star; 1994-96, The Daily Illini.
I was first hired by The Star as a Dow Jones copy editing intern on the Metro copy desk in 1995. I was hired back full-time to Metro in 1998 and transferred to the Business copy desk later that year. Before graduation, I was a nighttime copy editor at my college newspaper, The Daily Illini. In all these jobs, I proofread copy for grammatical errors, negotiated with writers to resolve factual issues and confusing language, and wrote headlines. I also read page proofs.

Opinions editor, 1995-96; columnist, 1996; The Daily Illini.
I coordinated editorial board meetings, wrote editorials, hired and fired columnists, vetted letters for publication, line-edited columns and letters, and paginated the layouts of my college newspaper’s opinions section. After leaving the post, I was hired by my successor as a weekly columnist.

Reporter, 1996 and 1994, the Peoria (Ill.) Journal-Star; 1992-96, The Daily Illini.
After graduating college, I went to work for my hometown newspaper, the Peoria Journal-Star, as the Bloomington, Ill., bureau chief. The news of interest to Peoria was mainly the sexual harassment case at Mitsubishi Motor Company. I also covered more generic crime news and higher education, with a little coverage of State Farm Insurance thrown in. Previously, I spent one summer in Peoria as an intern in the main newsroom. At my college newspaper, I covered administration and higher education issues.
