Pternochilus murinus "usumbara" Pocock 1897
This Tarantula is one of the prettiest of all, with a star on its thorax and orange color. It comes from the East side of Africa, in Kenya and Mombasa. It lives under low bushes and makes big tunnels of web. It does everything in these tunnels, hunting, eating, resting... When it reaches maturity ( and they do it very fast ) they can get a legspan upto 12 cm ( 4,5 inch ) Most of these critters are really agressive, and don't hesitate biting. With this, they have a rather active toxin, and this doesn't make it a spider to begin with. Keep them in a tank with the usual size 30x30x30 cm and give them lots of twigs, and a thick substrate so it can burrow. Really nice spiders to have, I have 16 of my own now, and also one of my favourites. |
