Euscorpius italicus Angermann 1957
This scorpion belongs to the genus of the Chactidae ( Lauri, 1896 ). This one of the few eurpean scorpions. It's a little scorpion wich isn't agressive at all. Though it would sting you, you dont have to fear. It is lesser poisonous than a bee. These scorpions , who don't get any bigger than 1,5 inch, are mainly found in northern Italy and the far south of Switzerland. A cousin of E. italicus, E. flavicaudis is more common and can be recodnised by the yellow legs. E. italicus is threatend because of distruction of his natural habitat, dry stone walls. These walls are easy to heat up on and give plenty of places to shelter. The walls are very dry too, so these scorpions tend to be held quite dry in captivity too, (Humidity 40%). Give them plenty of places to shelter, and a small water dish. The female can give birth from june till august, to about 20 or 30 babies. They leave the back of the female after 10 days. Keep the youg scorpions in a higher humidity than you keep the parents. E. italicus can be held in groups if their tank is big enough. The tanksize is adapted to size of the scorpion. two times the length of the scorpionbody for the depth of the tank and three times this length for the other bottomside. Offcourse is the tank bigger for a group. |
