Brachypelma smithi
F.O.P. Cambridge, 1897

Nice spiders that used to be imported for the pet-trade in large numbers. Unfortunatly they are rare in the wild now, and that is why they are on the CITES-list.
These spiders tend to get rather old, there was this one female in the amsterdam zoo ( Artis ) that got 30 years old!
males usually don't get much older than 7 years of age.
Keep em in an average vivarium, with a thick layer of substrate.
They won't dig that much, they actually show themselves most of the day. That is why it is such a popular spider for beginning hobby-ists.
Keep them warm. ( 30 degrees Celcius )

They do have a minor side though...and that is that they don' move a lot...Most people call them "Pet-rock" ( it figures ;-) )

Handling spiders is not recomended, even if they are known to be docile.
