| STUDY SHOWS THAT DEMOCRATIC MANAGERS GET BEST RESULTS Managers who work democratically with their staffs achieve better results than domineering bosses, according to new research carried out by Dr Mark Van Vugt from the University of Southamtpon's School of Psychology. The research involved leaders using dominant, democratic or casual styles in managing groups of people making investment decisions. The findings showed that both the dominant and democratic leaders achieved success. But many of the workers for the bossy managers left when they got the chance, and the groups fell apart. This did not happen in the case of the democratic bosses, while the laissez-faire managers couldn't get their teams to work at all. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Work can Kill | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| WORKPLACE: HOW A JOB CAN LEAD TO DEADLY ENDS. The most troubled employee in the workplace is like mercury floating in water: No one notices the poison. A toxic worker endures humiliation for years, becoming panicky and depressed. And then one day, in the most extreme cases, a worker reports to the office with a company badge, a gun and overwhelming rage at those who scorned him. In one case that was decided in a Belgian court last week, a postal employee escaped the harassment of co-workers by throwing himself before a train. Workplace violence is insidious, but it can be managed through deceptively simple principles. Words reduce violence. Communication offers a measure of dignity. "As long as people are talking, they are less likely to respond in violence," said James Gilligan, a psychiatrist who directed mental health programs in the Massachusetts prisons. His tutors in workplace violence were people who had erupted on the job, convicted murderers who universally complained about having endured humiliation at work, or insults and ridicule. Respect was what they yearned for and demanded with bullets. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
