This verse is about one of my favourite artists, Johhny Cash. I've bought some books on Mr Cash as I like to find out about behind the music, what he loved and hated, behind the Man In Black.
Or the crimes you play to
Johnny Cash played to audiences in Prisons aswell as normal concerts. Crimes = Criminals.
They keep on lying
As though they're dying
The word 'dying' brings the verse to life, so to speak. It's the end of the verse and points out that some people will do anything to escape punishment.
I think I saw a shadow hanging
Up high and stranded
This is my favourite line in the song. It's about death going on all of the time, all around the world, yet because we carry on with our lives, we do not know everyone who dies. The shadow represents an unknown person and the 'up high and stranded' shows there is nothing anyone can do about it. It's an unreachable target of trying to cheat death.
It keeps me thinking
Just like your drinking
Death is something that lingers in everyones mind, whether its a prominent thought or just a passing reality. People deal with it in different ways: religion, drugs, alcohol etc...
Are you afraid?
This isn't meant to put fear into people, it's just a general question, although the music and the way it's sang is rather alarming.
Can I believe you for a moment?
Going back to verse one, the world tends to look to powerful people for the answers.
A lifetime passes
Almost like a prison sentence.
Some things I wish for
Go to your people
Life can be unfair at times, things you want get taken by 'less deserving ones'.

The nights are never there for sleep
When someone walks out on you/ditches you, it can be hard to take and you can lose sleep over it.
She never was quite what she seemed
Obvious.
Although I say this from her heart
She's in control.
She owned it, red right from the start
Love at first site. Red is a passionate colour.
She's in my blood and in my eyes
She's means everything and she is everywhere I look.
She knows too much
Too much information can kill a relationship. Some things dont need to be said.
We settled down the tide came in
She washed away it's hard to grip
If something's washed away it's easily pulled away, goes with the flow. If she just up's and leave's, was her heart really in it, or does she enjoy messing with guys feelings? She moves onto her next prey.
She held the sun close to my skin
Loving someone too much can destroy a relationship just as too much sun can destroy your skin. Jealousy, mis-trust, mind control, suspicion.
I know that this is hard to take
These are the nights I lie awake
Thinking back can help a situation, seeing the good times, but can also bring back haunting memories.
I'll call her up and use a fake
If I was different, would it have worked? Could we try again under different circumstances?
She knows too much
Now I know she's here
