Ups: Great single player campaign, great graphics and sounds, easy to play.

Downs: Single player Campaign is too short, Story not well connected.

Call of Duty is a World War II themed FPS game. Those of you who have played Allied Assault will find that both games share a lot of similarities. And you are right! In fact some of the guys who were involved in making Allied Assault left the team and formed Infinity Ward to develop their own game, Call of Duty. However, despite many similarities Call of Duty is a very different game to Allied Assault.

In Call of Duty you will play in the boot of 3 different soldiers from 3 different Nations. You begin training as a US private in the 101 Airborne division, as the story unfolds you will later play as a British SAS soldier and a Russian novice foot soldier who was forced to fight in Stalingrad.
The game will capture your attention immediately when you are thrown into action and it is really hard to let it go. Strictly speaking Call of Duty is a fairly standard FPS - and if you have played Allied Assault before then you will feel right at home - however, what Call of Duty excel Allied Assault is the strong cinematic feel and focus more on fighting as a team.

The emphasis on teamwork is very important in Call of Duty, because it discard the 'lone wolf' approach that most FPS adopts. So you will be force to stick around with your teammates learning to provide covers for them while they do the same for you. This is the trademark that sets Call of Duty apart from any other FPS game on the market.

The basic gameplay is like your usual FPS game, with the usual leaning around the corners without exposing to much of yourself, the various movement stances that bring in some tactical advantages and disadvantages, the objective compass that you'll find familiar to Medal of Honor and the iron sight ,which was new to me and I did not like it when I first used it, but once you got it, it's really easy to aim.

Visually, Call of Duty is competent with other FPS in the market, and if you think that the graphics looked like Medal of Honor: Allied Assault then your suspicion is right! Call of Duty is powered by a heavily modified and aging Quake III Arena Engine and I must say Infinity Ward did a great job of improving the 5 year old engine. The graphics looked amazing, the texture is crisp and clear, the character and weapon models are well designed, the animation is fluid, the levels are huge and superbly designed and the best of all is that the engine is able to render more than 100 models on screen with no impact on performance at all.

The sound of Call of Duty is fantastic. It even excels the graphics department. The orchestral score vastly increased the intensity of intense actions, but too often it will be covered by the combat and when you get all excited about the actions you wouldn't even notice that the music is playing at all. The ambient sound effect from creaking of trees to the sound of distant gun fires is also excellent and bring up the mood a lot.
Now the best thing is that if you have a 5.1 speaker setup the sounds gets even more impressive.

I enjoyed playing Call of Duty, it's the most immerse World War II game I've ever played, the only complaint I have for it is that the single player campaign is too short and the campaign is too heavily scripted for replaying values.
I'm unable to comment the multiplayer aspect, but it offers the standard deathmatch, team deathmatch and objective based modes to increase its life span.

Overall:

Call of Duty is an excellent shooter on PC, if not a bit short but it's the most immersive FPS I've ever played. It is a must have if you loved World War II themed FPS.
