Soundtrack.net has ranked the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire soundtrack as one of the top ten this year. They said;

Arthur Levine Talks about HBP

Arthur Levine, editor of the US edition of the Harry Potter books, recently appeared at Yale and spoke about his work at scholastic on the series.

"First, I felt just shock, and then I felt there's no way, just no way, [name edited for spoiler] couldn't be dead, So I thought, 'What's the trick?' but unfortunately J.K. Rowling doesn't do that. She's writing about war and in war people die. They are not protected by their office and the esteem in which they are held. She wouldn't compromise that idea by easily bringing him back. Though his work on the "Harry Potter" series will end soon, Levine surprised some when he said he has no intention of ending his partnership with Rowling. I think I'll have complex feelings about the last book. It's clearly the series that I will be best known for. But it won't be, it's not the end of my career. It's not the last thing J.K. Rowling will write either, and my relationship with her will continue."

Newell on Fiennes

Sci-Fi Wire had an interview with Mike Newell, director of GoF, discussing the actor Raloh Fiennes, who plays Voldemort in the Harry Potter films.

"You have to have the actor to do it," Newell said in an interview. "And Ralph was the actor to do it, because Ralph doesn't chew the scenery, and he isn't a sort of 19th-century melodrama figure. He's absolutely real and cold and chilling and absolutely dedicated to doing bad. And as soon as you have that, you can do it."

He also discusses Voldemort's motivation for being the Dark Lord.

"What does he want?" Newell asked. "Why does he want to come back? What sort of a person is he that he wants to come back? What sort of a person is it who wants to impose a reign of evil? Does somebody who wants to impose a reign of evil actually see that it's evil? Or is it in fact for them a kind of good? So there was a lot of that stuff, which is the sort of thing that you discuss with an actor when he's getting to really concentrate on the part. And that was all very, very profitable."

Newell says he has not read HBP yet.

"It's another huge, wacky novel, and, simply, I've been busy," he said. "I obviously read the fifth one, because that has relevance...Nor did I change my view of things for any of the stories that might be coming up. I've been very strongly encouraged by the producers and by Warner Brothers to think of this as a specific one-off film."

Interview with Newell

L.A. Daily News published a new interview with Mike Newell, the director of GoF, today. He said that the fourth movie "is bound to be a bit different, because I'm English and the others weren't. Whether anyone will notice, I don't know, but I hope it has a kind of authenticity. And it's a little darker than the others, because these kids are growing up, and they have to face stuff that they haven't had to before. But the real thing about it is that it's a terrific adventure story and a really good thriller."

When they asked him what the most frightening part of the movie was he said, "Jo Rowling is very, very interested in what happens to these people when they hit puberty. So you've got to take it on, and of course it's painful, as we all remember it. But it's also terribly funny as well."

The complete interview can be read here.

Number 1 Box Office

The Chicago Sun-Times reported an article about fall films. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire "is expected to claim the No. 1 box-office title this season."

"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" opens Nov. 18, and we can't think of a better reason to go back to the movies.
Why? Because people are still wild about Harry, whose audience crosses both age and gender lines in its appeal. Because there was a new book this summer that renewed our hankering for Hogwarts. Because this movie also promises a teenage Harry who likes girls -- which is enough to make most Muggles count the days until they can see their boy wizard grow up and perhaps experience his first magical kiss....
New director Mike Newell says in a nervous voice, "It's a dense, wonderful book, and it's just my job not to mess it up."

Mike Newell Talks about GoF

There is a new article where Mike Newell briefly discussed his favorite parts of filming GoF movie.

"Aside from everything else, these are school stories," Newell said. "In a middle-of-the-road English education, the teachers are embattled, the school is a very kind of anarchic place and a very funny place, as well. Where two sets of people - one of which is becoming adults and one of which is trying to avoid going back to becoming children - clash.
"The anarchy of youth, it is really rich stuff. I loved that. I loved doing the school side of it."

Mugglenet has the transcript of a webchat they held with Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) last Thursday.

A French magazine, le NouvelObs, has an article on fanfiction. TLC has the article translated into English.

Terry Gilliam (director of the Brother's Grimm) is mentioned in the September 2 issue of Entertainment Weekly. The interviewer mentioned that J.K. Rowling wanted Gilliam for HP, so there's a paragraph about that. TLC has the transcript.

"I was reading the script as I was flying to Los Angeles for the [Warner Bros] meeting and thought, "Oh, she's seen Time Bandits, she's seen Monty Python." You know you're not going to get the job. It's just to keep her happy - due diligence. The terrible thing about it was during the course of the meeting, I started getting enthusiastic - I was even getting myself excited. I remember leaving the meeting, getting in my car and driving for about two hours along Mulholland Drive just so angry I'd allowed myself to get excited about it. I mean, Chris Columbus' versions are terrible. Just dull. Pedestrian. But I thought Alfonso Cuaron did a great job with the last one. I thought, Yeah, you got really close to it."

The magazine Girl's Life will be having an interview with Emma Watson (Hermione) soon and want people to sumbit questions. They can be sumbitted here.

Editor who Passed on JKR Speaks

John Kenney, one of the four editors who didn't publish Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone recently wrote an article for The International Herald Tribune about why he declined the story. He writes:

When I did arrive, the office was empty. On my desk I saw a manila envelope. The cover letter was from an agent I'd never heard of. British. Said the enclosed manuscript was "the next great children's book, a 'Goodnight Moon' for preteens." I laughed. My father, who had also been a book editor before turning to taxidermy, had passed on "Goodnight Moon," and he and I often laughed at that.

I've always thought myself a rather keen spotter of "the next big book."

Certainly that was my reputation. I don't wish to boast, but....

I read the first few chapters of this so-called manuscript and, frankly, thought it drivel.

February, perhaps March of the next year, I received a call from J.K. Rowling herself.... I said I enjoyed her work a great deal, but that it didn't meet our needs at this time - the standard industry brushoff. There was a pause and I thought the line had gone dead when I heard laughing. "Mr. Wortham," she said with a light British accent. "I was calling as a courtesy, actually. To tell you that I sold the book. To Scholastic. For..." The line went dead. Or perhaps I passed out. I forget which.

You can get the full article here.

Fan Writes own Harry Potter Story

Dennis, a sixteen year old boy from the Netherlands, was so impatient waiting for the release of HBP he decided to write his own version. He began writing his own version in January 2004. Bloomsbury wasn't happy though and forbid him to publish the book. So instead he uploaded his story, Harry Potter and the Torck with the Green Flames onto the internet. The author stated:

"I used a lot of my own school experiences in the story. It covers a multitude of aspects like a school-strike, friendship, love, but also sport. It's certainly not difficult to try to come close to JK's own writing style. There is a certain structure to the story that I also used in my own book."
