Tenodera aridifolia sinensis
CHINESE MANTIS

Special notes: An extremely common mantis encountered upon in the U.S. You can find them almost anywhere, including their oothecae at Home Depot used as pest control. They are an aggressive species but are docile while being handled, however, they are capable of drawing blood if you are pinched. An excellent beginner's mantis.

11.15.07 Well, my baby is dying. I will get an ootheca from Home Depot perhaps in the future to continue raising T. aridifolia sinensis in remembrance of my baby Tehno.

11.08.07 I currently only have one of this species and no mate for him. He is currently taking 1/2 - 3/4 inch crickets, but I feed him sparingly. There is a possibility of me going out to find a female T. sinesis as they are quite common, but I do not want my male to become a snack for this mate either. I will probably not mate him but I will be continuing this species via ootheca purchased from either Home Depot or an online breeder.

This mantis species was my first and most encountered. I started out with an adult female purchased from an exotic pet shop and later a male nymph and several adult females to follow, all wildcaught. I then had my first ooths from the wildcaught gravid females. I was a novice and managed to only raise 8 mantids out of the three oothecae the gravid females produced. The majority of the 8 died due to Petco cricket poisoning, and the last three died due to starvation, irresponsibility on my part.
