James, Remus, Sirius and Peter were enjoying their day off from school and exercising their seventh year privileges by spending the day in Hogsmeade. They had once again met up behind the Three Broomsticks and were plotting their next bout of rule breaking. Sirius and Remus were enthusiastically drawing up plans of where they would go and what they would do with Peter quietly looking on, but James had his mind elsewhere.

"James," Sirius said in a mockingly sing-song voice. "Oh James… I know who you’re thinking about." Remus and Peter laughed appreciatively and even James cracked a smile.

"James and Lily, sitting in a tree! K I S S I N G," Sirius spelled out. James shot him a wry look and replied,

"Well, at least I’ve managed to keep a steady girlfriend for the last four years as opposed to you. How many have you had now? Twenty? Thirty?" James grinned as Sirius swung his fist playfully at James.

"Well, she wouldn’t even like you if you weren’t Quidditch captain." He retorted. Lupin and Peter broke into laughter again and James smiled as Lily’s face in the top row of the stands at the Quidditch pitch, her eyes on his, swam into his head.

"James," said Remus with a smirk. "You can’t even pay attention to our daring plans when you’re thinking about Lily! It’s no wonder you’re barely passing Potions."

"It’s not my fault. If Professor Brynison didn’t favor that evil git Snape all the time, I’d be doing just fine," James said tersely.

"Oh, so if he favored you every time you hit him or shoved his annoying face in his cauldron you’d be passing?" Sirius chortled. "You’re just jealous that Snape is better at something than you."

"Me jealous?" James asked, feigning a hurt tone. "What have I to be jealous of him for? Anyway, who’s going out with the best looking girl in the year?"

The four Marauders returned to their plans, drawing out elaborate maps of the Hogsmeade and Hogwarts grounds paying special attention to the boundaries of the Forbidden Forest. James forced his thoughts away from Lily’s red hair and bright green eyes to join his friends.

They worked in silence for a few minutes, then Peter piped up, "James, what did you and Lily talk about last night? You were ages." The other two suddenly looked up, identical grins on both their faces.

"He had to, didn’t her?" Remus asked Sirius.

"Yeah, he must have. He wouldn’t be so happy today," Sirius replied.

"What?" Peter asked again.

James’ grin widened and he pulled his hand out of his pocket. On it was a gold engagement band.

Even Sirius stopped joking around to congratulate his friend. Remus slapped him on the back, Sirius threw his arm over James neck and Peter grinned at him with a odd look in his eye.

"We’re not going to marry for a year or two," James said quickly. "And all you are invited of course."

"Who’s going to be your best man?" Asked Remus.

"Haven’t decided that one yet," James said looking around at his three best friends.

His friends laughed and arm in arm, the rounded the Three Broomsticks and onto the busy Hogsmeade Main Street. And then Sirius pretended to trip James, who pretended to fall right in front of a young lady doing her shopping. And the four Marauders ran off down the street, Peter trying hard to keep up, Lupin wondering if any of the teachers had seen, Sirius hoping some of the teachers had seen, and James with his thoughts full of Lily.

At my school though.
