"What the hell was that?"

Kyle glanced over in confusion. "What?"

"Make myself useful?" Jake snapped, "What was that supposed to mean?"

"Jake, it was work," Kyle started, surprised that Jake seemed so annoyed.

Jake snorted rudely. "No, it wasn't, Kyle, it was patronising and dismissive."

Frowning, Kyle glanced over at Jake. His friend was staring straight ahead, face serious, eyes dark, mouth tight. "I'm your superior, Jake," Kyle sighed, "We have to keep work separate from... outside work." He couldn't quite say 'us'. "I can't be seen to be treating you any different."

"But you are," Jake sighed heavily. "Look, I'm not the one who has a problem keeping us separate from work, Kyle, you are."

Kyle frowned, "What?"

"You're so worried someone's going to notice something, you're treating me like crap," Jake said quietly. "I just can't... you've got to stop it, please."

Eyes firmly on the road, Kyle thought about how he'd treated Jake since they'd started dating. Maybe he had been getting more harsh and abrupt with Jake. His stomach tightened painfully at the thought of hurting his friend. "Shit," he muttered, "Jake, I'm sorry. I just, I guess I'm a little paranoid. It's not like Warner needs much more of an excuse to take over." He sighed, "If they can, they'll break you and use you, Jake. I can't let that happen because of me."

Jake blinked at him, eyes shining just a little. "Okay," he whispered, "But can you tone it down a bit, because it feels personal."

Kyle nodded. "Yeah, I'm sorry, I didn't mean any of it personally though, Jake, okay?"

"Yeah, thanks, Kyle." Jake leaned over and quickly kissed his cheek. Smiling, Kyle reached over and gently squeezed Jake's knee before he pulled up outside Foxx's home.
