Jake sat down next to him and Kyle shifted uncomfortably. Why was Jake sitting so close? Why had he agreed to meeting at Jake's apartment?

They'd met up for coffee a few times since Jake had changed things so dramatically between them, but they'd never been completely alone unless they were on a mission; and Kyle had been able to deal with that, to talk easily, comfortably with his friend.

But this, this was different, harder knowing that Jake felt things for him. And knowing that he wasn't sure what he felt for Jake. Whatever it was, Kyle knew that he felt a great deal more for his male partner and friend than he ever had for any friend, male or female, and that, whatever it was, it was growing stronger.

Swallowing a scalding gulp of coffee, Kyle surreptitiously shifted away slightly, then froze as he felt Jake's eyes on him.

"Kyle," Jake sighed, "What are you doing here?"

"Having coffee?" Kyle said uncertainly.

Rolling his eyes, Jake moved right back into the corner of the couch, pulling his legs up to wrap his arms round them. "Right," Jake snorted, "We could have had coffee at Starbucks like we usually do if that's what you wanted."

"Jake, don't," Kyle sighed, looking down at his hands. This was so hard, new feelings to deal with, the fact that they were partners and that the NSA had a strict no-fraternisation policy just added to his problems. But then there was his growing need to not hurt Jake's feelings, to spend time with him... to protect him, to deal with too. "I told you I don't know what I want."

"Then stick to Starbucks and don't give me hope that something more might develop, Kyle," Jake sounded upset, "Because it's not fair."

"I'm sorry," Kyle pressed his lips together, distressed at hurting Jake, "I just don't know where this is going right now."

Jake's head snapped up and chocolate-brown eyes stared hard at him. Then, suddenly, before Kyle could even blink, the slender man had moved right up to him and pressed a gentle kiss to his mouth. Jake's lips were warm and soft against his, and just the tiniest hint of tongue slid between his lips. Kyle gasped, heat shooting through his body.

"Jake," he breathed, pulling away hurriedly.

His friend's eyes slid shut and he sighed quietly, "God, Kyle, I'm so sorry."

"Don't be," Kyle whispered, a little shocked as how good such a brief kiss had felt. "I know it was too soon to come here, but I want you to know your hope wasn't false."

Jake smiled tightly at him. "I didn't mean to push, Kyle," he murmured, "I'm just so tired of not going for what I want and I like you. I care about you, you know?"

"Yeah," Kyle nodded, "I know. I just need some time."

"Sure." Jake nodded, but his eyes were shining and his smile trembled a little which made Kyle feel bad all over again.

Getting to his feet, Kyle sighed, unable to put into words any of what he was feeling and thinking. It was scary stuff falling for a partner. He'd never thought about a man, felt about a man the way he did about Jake. It was terrifying.

"I'll, uh, I'll see you at work," Kyle said quietly. On impulse, he bent quickly and kissed Jake's cheek before hurrying out of the apartment. He just hoped that he wouldn't hurt Jake in the end.
