Chapter Two:

Seeking Revenge

[Guen]

Stepping back, she broke the spell of the moment. "Now-we need to leave, as quietly and stealthily as possible-after our display just now.

Kirjath, I have a mount for you-I need you mobile. Have any others need for mounts-?" Smiling grimly , she went on-"Don't worry ,it will come out of your salary."

" We go North-through the pass by Mysthaven, then Northeast through the Badlands to Arrowwind Abbey. It's a hard path, but one we are less likely to attacked on. At the Abbey , there is a cleric who has been researching Jarg -hoping to find the Source of his power. Where we go from there depends on what has been found."

"Kara , you are so goooo-dd at the Bazzaar," Guen smiled at the small woman" would you and Kirjath pick up supplies?-We need camp food for the first seven day, and then pack rations beyond that." She handed the half-elf a sack of coins.

" Kirjath, we especially need salt , to handle any meat we may need to carry. Gather any >tools you deem necessary for your work, also. You need to gather >what back packs and gear we might need should we lose the horses."

Turning to Tigra, she asked, "Tigra , would you mind seeing to grain and a repair kit for tack?-We will have to carry grain through the badlands. You will all find the mules in the stable yard. I want to leave 3 or 4 hours before daybreak-Bran will let us out a small postern he knows, that is seldom watched." Placing another bag in Tigra's care. She laid a hand in thanks on the girls shoulder.
Guen finally leveled her gaze on Sandanamous. "May I call you Sand, Sirrah?" One must always be polite to a Dragon. " Your name is great and beautiful , but my poor tongue twists and stumbles on it. I am truly glad of >your company. Kara here, has aquired a book of Spells and I hoped that you would know of a shop in which you might pick up any supplies that she would need and any you might think of. ?" She bowed respectfully in his direction , then placed a final bag of coins in his hands.

Glancing over the assorted group, she felt a glow of hope. This was a thing that was of real importenace to the World. One such as Jarg could not go on taking innocent lives at a whim.

"We meet here at dusk , to rest and eat. I need to see to the horses and consult with an old friend about Jarg. Take care, my Friends." With a sign to Raz, she headed for the door.

[Kara]

Kara watched as the rest of the group pledged their own oathes to the cause. She felt Tirga grip on her own and , gentle but firm. Tigras touch made her feel like she was a part of the group now. Before she just felt like a friend to Guen. Now, things have changed, for the better, she was not sure of, as of yet. "Time will tell", Kara thought.

She watched while Guen explained to everyone what needed to be done. Gathering supplies for the group was going to be hard. She had no idea what anyone liked or what their taste was in meats and fruits.

" Well if they dont like what I buy, then they can just starve or kill their own game", she said to herself. Kara watched while Guen handed out three bags of coins . One to Sand, one to Tigra, and one to her. Kara tossed the bag up and down in her hand, feeling the waight of the coins .

"There is more than enough here to supply us for a month , if I talk to the peddlers just right. Come on Rolf, Its time for us to go out and see what we can find". Reaching for her staff, she headed out the door of the inn.

Kara was about to step outside, when she heard Tigra say, "Hold on Kara, I would like to go with you. Turning, she saw Tigra, with the bag of money tied to her belt, and her tail swaying back behind her.

"Sure , I dont mind a little company, and I know Rolf wouldn't mind, would you Rolf"? Rolf just stood there with his tail waging and his tounge out. "He is kinda cute, isnt he"? Tigra said and scratched behind his ear. Rolf just bent his head back and started wagging his tail harder. Kara just shook her head and started walking.

"Big baby". I can not belive him Tigra. He never acts this way around any one else". Laughing, Tigra walked beside Kara and said ," I am use to it. It seems I have that kind of power over any male, be it man or Wolf. Smileing, she added " and sometimes you can not tell one from the other, if you know what I mean", and winks. Kara knew what Tigra was trying to say. As she became older, and she started "filling out", she found that with just a smile, could turn almost any mans head. She was hoping that it would work today.

Tigra picked up the pace and said " Come one Kara, I know a few places where we can get the supplies we need. Most of them know me, and I am sure I can get a good price".

Kara followed Tigra around the Festival until they came apon a small shop. Looking at the sign , it read Butcher Shop. " Here is where we can buy the best cuts of meat , and dried meats to carry on the trails. That have about anything you would need , and later I can show you a shop for the spicies". Walking in , the man behind the counter turned and saw Tigra standing there with Her hands on her hips.

[Shop Owner]

" By the gods, Is that you Tigra? I heard that you were killed by a war lord to the north. You are looking great, for some one that died. What brings you into my little shop today? I have a few specials going on , during the festival . Here , try this cut of boar. I smoked it for over a week, and I must say , it turned out better than I thought.

[Tigra/Kara]

Reaching for a piece of the dried boar, Tigra looked around the shop at all of the meat that was hanging above her head. Handing a piece to Kara, she bit into it and started chewing. " Not to bad , for boar. Tender, not to spicy, and it has a great taste. What do you think Kara"?

Kara was to busy chewing on the dried boar to listen . She was thinking back to the time her father took a boar down that was digging up her mothers garden. They ate off of that boar for weeks. She could stil remember the smell of it cooking and the way...

Tigra snapped her fingers in front of Kara, and said "Kara , how is it? The boar, how does it taste? "

"Oh..huh.. Oh.. its great. Sorry, I was thinking of something else. Yes , its very good. We will take about ten bags full, along with a good shoulder ham, salted and cured of course, and some sliced meats. Make it an asortment of everything you have and lable them. Do you see anything you want Tigra? I have no idea what the others want, so I am just going to guess", and Kara winked at the butcher.

* What about me and Raz? Are we going to have to eat the left overs*? Before Kara was able to answer, Tigra spoke up. Yes, I would like to add to the list. Add about six good stew bone , and be sure that they are fresh and have some meat left to the bone". Reaching in her bag, Tigra tosses five steel coins on the counter. If its not trouble, have these things sent to the stables. There are two mules there. Have them placed one the mules and tied down for a long jorney.

[Shop Owner]

Sure Tigra , you know thats not any trouble. I will make sure everything is there for you and within easy grasp. The meats will be packaged with what they are, and I will throw in something special for you. Its good to see your still with us Tigra, And the owner reaches for the coins.

" What should I do with the change"?

[Tigra/Kara]

Turning before she walked out the door, she said "Do with it what you always do with it", and she closes the door behind her. Kara had a puzzled look and Tigra spotted it. " It was only a few coppers, and he helps the sick and the old, that never have enough for a meal. If you looked back, you would have seen him ,placing the change in a small bowl, by the end of the counter. The old and the sick would go in and take a coin and get a good slice of meat for the days stew, or a big bone, to make soup with. They sometimes help him carry the meat in , or help with the smoker. It makes him happy, and it helps keeps the baggers off the streets. Now, on to the fruits store. I know Guen loves fruits, and they have a wide varity of fruits there. Who knows , we might find some dates there".

Kara loked surprized when Tigra said Dates. "Tigra, Why are we looking for dates at a fruit store. We havn't got the time to be dating anyone at this short notice".

Tigra gave Kara a straight look, then almost past out laughing. No..no..Not "Dates", but dates. Fruit that grow from trees . They are very sweet, and they should be in season this time of year. They grow from a tall tree that calls the desart its home. I thought it would be a great surprize to get some for Guen".

Wiping tears from her eyes , Tigra pointed to a shop that had boxes and shelves full of all kinds of fruits out front. Kara looked at Tigra, and stuck her lower lip out." Well I didnt know. You didnt have to laugh at me. The only date I ever heard of was when you went out with a boy or a girl, to watch the clouds float over head, or see the birds sing". Crossing her arm, she stood there looking at Tigra.

"What? Whats wrong now? Oh, I see. Your mad at me because I was laughing at you. I am sorry, I was not really laughing at you, its..well.. I alway thought everyone knew what dates were. Come on, I will buy you a date, so you will know the diffrence". Taking Karas arm, she pulled her over to the stand and asked , " Are the dates in season now? I would like my friend to try one.

[ young girl]

Looking up and seeing Tigra standing there ,the young girl almost dropped a box of apples . 'Yes..yes..I think they are. Let me go and see".

The young girl ran into the shop and ducked around a few boxes that were pilled by the back room door. Itdid not take long , and she was back outside, with a fresh ,ripe date in her hand. Tigra saw that the girl cleaned her hands , before bringing the date out. Her hands were clean up to the wrist, but the rest of the arm was dirty.

" Here, try this one. We have others, but this is one better. Tigra smiled back at the girl, and handed the date over to Kara.

[Tigra/Kara]

" Here, try this date, but be careful. These have very hard seeds, that can chip a tooth with ease", and she showed Kara one of her back teeth. " The first time I tried eating one, so be careful".

Kara took a little bit of the date. It was sweet, and soft. It looked like a big raisin , but it tastes like it was dipped in honey. " They are good", and finished chewing on the rest, and spitting out the seeds in her hand. "I see what you mean about the seeds being hard to chew, But if you chew slow, you can work around them".

Tigra took one, and nibbled on it until the seeds were all that was left. " They are better dried, and coated with honey. When they dry, the seeds pop out, so you can chew until you get sick of them.

We will take two bags of your dried dates, and send over a small bag of your freshest ones to the Dragons -inn. Tell Hugh, that they are for Guen. He will make sure she gets them, Tigra said, "and take an assortment of fruits over to the stables where two mules are being set up fo our trip. The butcher should be there soon to help you. Tell him that Tigra sent you".

Placing two steel coins in her hands, she says "The rest is for you. Take something to your mom tonight. She will be surprized to see fresh meat on the table".

Taking a apple from the box , Tigra tossed it at Rolf, and watched as he chewed it up with two bites. "I think Rolf loves apples, and smiled. Rubbing the young girls head, she smiles and heads back. Now for tack and grain for the horses and mules.

After finding the things they needed , Tigra and Kara started to head back to the inn. Kara was carrying her staff, and Tigra asked , " How are you going to ride a horse, and carry that thing around ? There is no way your going to be able to control that war horse and hold it at the same time. Come on, I have a friend that might help us . He is a leathersmith and he does great work". Kara said , I could carry it under my arm, or accross my lap", and she demonstrated by bending down and placing it over her lap. She almost knocked two people dow that was walking by. "Oh, Sorry" she said and heard them curse , while stumbling away. "I guess that wouldn't work would it. I would ride up one some one and knock them right off their saddle". Well, lets go and see the leathersmith and see what we can do.
It didnt take long for the leathersmith to fix something for Kara to use. He made a belt that went over one shoulder, and under the other. There he placed what he called a "trap". It was a device that was made of strips of stiff leather and formed into two C`s . The trap had small fingers, that when Kara placed the staff inbetween the C it would cause the formed leather to close around the shaft. Like a bear trap. It went from her right shoulder, down to her left hip. The staff would stay there until she pulled down . She could unlock the trap so it would be straight behind her, and stay hidden, or from side to side. Then she could hold it with both hands and run and hit anyone within turning range. If she wanted to sit down, the staff could be unlocked and carried.

" This is great. Thank you Tigra", and she gave her a big hug. Tigra was startled at first. It had been a long time since anyone held her that close, unless she was fighting them. Karas hug made her feel wanted, and she reached around her shoulder and pulled her close.

" You know, if we keep doing this, peoples going to talk". Kar looked up at her with a puzzled look, then it caught her. She blushed a deep red and said " do you think they will? I could never...but she let the rest slide. Kara felt like Tigra was trying to protect her from harms way. It felt good, being close to Tigra, and she looked up a saw Tigra looking down with a cats grin on her face. "Come on Kara, I will race you and Rolf to the Inn. I am getting hungry".

Anyone watching that day, could not believe their eyes.

Running in the middle of the street was a Tigress, a Wolf, and a young half elf. The Wolf was nipping at the tigress`s tail, while the young elf was trying to trip the wolf with a big staff. They could hear the laughter, see them smile, and watched as they all tried to make it to the Dragons -inn door way. If anyone was trying to get out, they would have been trampled by a wolf, a tigress and a young elfs and her staff. The inns door would never be the same again.......

[Guen]

Leaving the inn with Raza on her heels, Guen headed for a derilict part of town. Working her way through old streets that became more narrow with each turn , she slipped into a dark alleyway and came to an abrupt halt under an overhang. Rapping out a series of knocks , she waited . The door was opened and the girl slid in, Raz a shadow on her heels.

Following the shape that admitted her, she was led to a dim room. The qiet form left and girl and hound were alone in the room. Raising her voice, Guen called out.

"Gilarter-I have need of you! I call back the debt you owe me, by my father's Blood!"

The sheen of nervous sweat was on her brow. Raz edged closed to her friend. Moments passed. Then , in a swirl of luminous green and gold dust a form materialized. Sleek skull, elongated form , with ears like a dire hound, the bronze skinned being rasped out "I come. What is the need, oh Daughter of the House?"
Taking her fear in hand, Guen replied carefully.

"I seek to destroy the one who killed all of my Blood. The one known as Jarg. I ask you now where I must go to learn of the Evil that has shaped the man. "
"You push me Girl!" The creature screeched. "I see in your mind, that you know Jarg's Master and I are of like inclination. Do you remember that your Father bound me with Blood, but only for three questions. This is the second. Have a care that I do not Seek thine!"

With that threat , Guen felt it enter her mind, leaving behind what she needed to know. Raz , bared teeth and hackles up woke her from a trance.

*It's all right, my friend. I have my answer.Let 's return to the Inn.*

They arrived back at the Inn just in time to see the girl's exhuberant entrance. Shaking her head the exhausted WaReen slipped in quietly. tired as she was, though, it lifted her heart to see others enjoying their gift of life....

{North-in the Forest of Jarg}

[Fortag]

The lean, musclular soldier stood poised on the tower battlement, one gauntleted arm extended high. From out of the looming storm clouds descended a great Shere-Eagle. It landed with a deadly grip on his protected arm, glared at him with a baleful eye and then settled, waiting for him to do his part in this act of service to the Lord.

Fortag undid the small brass scroll from the mighty raptor's leg and hefted him high. The hugh Eagle took flight -returning to the mountain crags.Moving rapidly down the stairs into the rooms on the next level, Jarg's man moved into the light cast by the globes. Opening the scoll case, he unrolled a sheet of fine parchment. After reading the message inscribed his tanned skin bleached near-white with fear! *Lord Jarg must hear this news* Trembling inwardly, the seasoned soldier , went in search of his master.

{Back at Montfort}

[Little girl]

The girl slipped into the stables, looking around for Bran, the stable boy. At first she didn't see him, but she heard his soft, lilting song as he worked with Lady Guen's war stallion. Moving quiet as a mouse, she made sure no one else was near. She drew close to the open stall, trying to get his attention. Hai'nn, the great stallion snorted, and she jumped back in fear.

Bran heard her, and turning spoke gently - "Hah! Little One, Mighty Hai'nn won't hurt you! He is only terrible to those he faces in battle! "

The little girl didn't seem too sure of that. Bran knelt down to her level, his shock of red hair bright in the beams of sunlight drfting in through the cracks. "Would you like to touch him if I am with you? " he asked.

Picking her up he sat her on the railing of Hai'nn's stall. With a soft whistle he called the great horse over. Hai'nn, blowing softly, reached out and touched the girl's face. His soft nobrushed her cheek. "He's so gentle!" the little girl whispered in amazement.

"Aya, that he is, see, now, he likes you!" As Hai'nn came back again, looking for treats.

"But what brings you to see me, Nalda?" Bran, asked as he set her down in the aisle. He knew the girl was usually helping her Mother, Fayrene , sell in the Market.

Standing still, the girl gave him the message from her Mother. "Mother says that you need to let Lady Guen know that there are dark men , from over the mountains, looking about and asking a lot of questions, she said it was really important, that these are bad men, and they will hurt you and Lady Guen!" She finished in a rush.

Bran gave Nalda a fresh apple and sent her back to the Market. "Tell your Mother that I am awake to it, will you Nalda?"

Bran put on a much worn cloak, an old floppy hat and taking a staff slipped into the Market. Finding a vantage point he searched the Faire crowd for the strangers.

*Ah, finally* He spotted the men Fayrene had warned of. Moving as an old cripple, he followed. They were indeed from the Steppe's. As he followed he caught a glimpse of a insignia of the Shere.

*Jarg's! They are Jargs's!*

The knowledge hit him like a blow. Recovering he continued to follow. Even drew close enough to hear their questions.

* Faye is right. They want Guen.*

The loyal youngster slid into a back alley and taking the hidden ways came quickly to the Inn.

Going in through the Kitchen he took Sara aside, and warned her not to tell the men of Guen or her friends actions. Hugh came in just at that moment and seeing the look on Bran's face drew him into the office.

Bran filled Hugh in on what was happening. The good hearted man offered to help in any way he could. "What can we do, other than warning her, Hugh? " said Bran, wiping a hand across his frightened features. The young man was worried.

Guen had found him , brought him to the inn and taught him to care well for the horses. She had taken the time to teach him hunting skills and the use of the Sword. Now she was in terrible danger and he felt helpless.

Hugh watched this flit across the boy's face. Grasping his arm, he said " Right now? The thing you need to do is warn her, without attracting a lot of attention. I will call her in here on some pretense, do you step between that curtain and the wall, in case any look in, while I am fetching her." With that the landlord went looking for Guen.

[Kara/Tigra]

'I almost beat you, but that damn Wolf of yours almost made me fall", Tigra said as they made their way into the Inn. " Who was it that wanted to race in the first place. All Rolf was doing was making sure that I was not going to be last", and she gave Rolf a hug. "God boy", and Kara laughed. " Well, next time he might not be so lucky. I almost took out an old man that was trying to get out of the way".

Tigra had on a stern look, but that soon changed into laughter, after she said , " But did you see the face on that guard , as we whipped by and I slapped him on his butt. He didn't know rather to chase after us or blush".

Kara started blushing, " I know, and he thought it was me. I was right next to him when you grabbed him, and Rolf was to busy trying to slow you down to do anything. I can see it now. "Reward for the capture of one butt grabber. Last seen running from the scene with a smile on her face". Tears of laughter could be seen coming from both girls.

Both girls turned when they saw Raza and Guen walk in. There laughter died down to a chuckle or two. Tigra choked out "Hugh, one glass of your best ale, and two glasses of your best fruit juice".

Grabbing Kara arm, Tigra pull's her to the table by the fireplace. " Lets not tell Guen about the race. She might think we are not taking things seriously". Kara looked up at Tigra and smiled and shook her head. She was trying to to burst out laughing. It took all she had, but she was able to hold it in. A few giggles and snorts pooped out, and Tigra had to place her hand over Kara's mouth. "Quit , or I am going to have to gag you", Tigra said and started to reach for a napkin. "Ok..ok.. but it was funny watching you holding onto Rolf`s tail and trying to pull him back". * I think she pulled out all of my fur on the end of my tail too. What will Raz think of me now? A wolf with a bald tail tip.* " Big baby" was all Kara said, and she started rubbing his ears.

After Sara brought them their drinks, Tigra said " Kara, let me see that little book you found at the shop. I would like to read it and see if there is anything new in it". Kara dug threw her back pack and finding the book, she handed it to Tigra.

"Are you a mage Tigra? You never told us that. Can you teach me a few spells? Did I tell you that my mother had a book like that. She used it for healing and other things. She always said that she was pro..prog...prot......

Protecting? There is a spell for protection, but only for large creatures such as Bears and Dragons, and other things. It does not work on man or woman, unless their minds are slow. It does show how to start fires, and controls the flames. Here, let me show you how the spell works. I know this one, so it should not be to hard to remember.

Tigra closed her eyes and turned to the fireplace. Thinking about the spell, she opened her eyes and said a few words, that were ancient. The flames in the fireplace started to rise and dance around the log. Figures of a knight and a large Red Dragon came into view. They both fought threw the forest of flaming trees, over hills and threw valleys. The Dragon would blow long blue-white flames at the knight, while he raised his shield . Flames licked around the knight, and Tigra watched as he dropped to one knee, trying to weld the flame away from his body. The Dragon took another fiery breath, and the knight took that chance to strike. A long red sword buried itself deep into the dragons belly. The dragon died while flames shot from his mouth.

The fire died, then came alive with flame red rabbits playing in a field of clover, a hawk flew high overhead. Flowers af all colors danced in a white flaming moon, and deer walked an drank from a fiery stream , while fish jumped up and tried for a dragonfly as it floated across the hot breeze.

Tigra let the flames die down , and looked over to Kara. " Its easy once you can control the flames. But I think I will show you how to do that, after we make camp the first night. I wouldn't think Hugh would like it if you burnt the inn down, while learning a spell".

She laughed and handed the book back to Kara. "Read up on everything that is in there, then I will show you what to do".

Kara was just sitting there looking at the flames when Tigra started making them dance. Her eyes became wide, and there was a smile on her face that no one could wipe off. All anyone heard her say was "lookout" and "watch it" while the dragon and Knight fought. When Tigra made the Dragon die, Kara was heard to say "Wasn't right. She was just protecting her young". She felt better when she saw the rabbits and the flowers. The fish jumping up made her clap her hands, an a smile came back on her face. "Beautiful", was all she said and looked back at the flames, while holding her book..............

[OCC]

I wish to give credit to a Char called [Alia Cassel] in the Wizards Greed Thread. We have lost her, but her magic still makes others smile. It was her idea about the flaming dance. I give her the credit to have such a great mind to think up something like that. I wish her well.. Draco Silverwing..

[Guen]

Slipping into a corner bench, Guen sat quietly watching the girls. She saw Raz slide over to lie down next to Rolf. Sipping on the fruit juice one of the waitressess brought , she slowly unwound. The energy required to deal with Gilarter was tremendous. She was exhausted. With a sigh, she left the happy table and glided upstairs to bed.

Sending to Raza, she asked *Raz, would you have Rolf let Kara know that I must rest a while? I'll rejoin them later.* as the heavy oak door closed she saw only Judy's famous feather bed. Sitting on the edge to take off her boots, she lay back for *....just one second, then I'll get undressed.* Raz heard her thoughts ease into sleep, and felt better. her friend had been running on sheer energy for several days now.

[Raza]

Laying down gently next to Rolf, Raz rested with muzzle on her paws. Lifting her head a moment, she thought at Rolf, asking * Can you tell Kara to wake Guen in a few hours? She just confronted her Father's pet Demon and lives to tell about it. She's drifted off to sleep, now ,upstairs* With that she lay her head across his back and went to sleep.

[Hugh]

Not seeing Guen when he searched the main room, Hugh went back to Bran.

" Bran, she's not there yet. I see her friends, but they are very happy and laughing right now. what do you want to do? You know that all are safe here-this ground is neutral. But once outside-there is nothing I can do to portect them, or you, if your effort to warn her becomes known." Pacing, the Inn Keeper tried to think of something to help the young woman and her troupe.

[Bran]

Speaking quietly, Bran reassured Hugh-"All know of your desire for peace, my friend. But Guen comes, always, to say goodnight to the mighty Hai'nn. I will catch her then. If the Dark Ones should come before then, light a candle in the back hall window, and I will try to reach her first!"

With that, Bran went out. Hugh shook his head. "And I wanted to help Adventurers-What God hit me in the head?"

[Kirjath]

Meandering through the streets of Montfort, Kirjath found himself once again in front of the Red Dragons Inn. As per Guen's request, he had gone out to get items for their journey. Guen had forgotten about water for the road ahead, so Kirjath returned with several waterskins filled with water from one of the town wells. He headed around the inn to the nearby stable and dropped off his burden. Another horse snorted at him in disapproval. Kirjath smiled at the beast, shrugged his shoulders then headed out.

Back inside the inn, he found the catgirl and half-elf sitting at the table. Neither Guen nor the dragon-man were anywhere to be seen. First, Kirjath walked to the opposite wall where he had left his weapons leaning against the wall. A throwing axe and hunting knife were strapped to his belt. As Kirjath's hand wrapped itself around the spears, the iron tip ends glowed a dull blue for a moment before returning to normal. A minor enchantment had been placed on the spears for accuracy and longer range.
,br> Joining Tigra and Kara at the table, he asked them, "How go the preparations?" He had already noticed the packed mules at the stable, so he knew that they were almost ready. However, he was aware that he had been very reticent toward his companions. This needed to change.

[Guen]

Guen stirred slowly. "Aaarghhh!" Long limbs stretching like a cat's she rolled over and sat up. Holding a fold of her shirt out and sniffing, she wrinkled her nose. *One last bath. I will have one last bath! Then we leave. I wonder if Kirjath and Sand have shown up yet? -Ah, well. We will do as needs be.*

Ringing for Tamma, the bath girl, she finished her packing -leaving out a deep green soft leather riding set-with supple boots that reached her thighs. Tamma knocked gently, then brought in the tub and hot water. Filled to the brim with Lemon Verbena and Rose bubbles, it was the only indulgence, other than books, that Guen allowed herself. Stripping and stepping in , the golden skinned girl submerged in the luxurious tub and soaked away the stress. An hour later , with hot refills by the thoughtful Tamma, Guen rose from the tub, dried herself and her thick black hair and dressed ready for the road.Leaving a generous tip for the girl Tamma, Guen sought out Hugh , to settle the bill for the group.

Working her way through the crowded Inn, she saw that Kirjath had rejoined the group. *Wonderful! We only lack the Ifriti Sand. I am worried about him, he seems to be taking overlong.*

Catching sight of Hugh, she cornered him to make the payment on their lodging and settle the account for the horses. Hugh drew her into his office on the pretense of showing her the bill.

[Hugh]

"Lady, I fear there is evil in the air for you and yours tonight. Do you seek out Bran in the stables- he has a warning for you, but go quietly, Gueny. They are Jarg's!" With a huge, impulsive bearhug he sent herout into the common room, then waited a little before re-entering himself.

[tIGRA]

Tigra saw Guen walking down the stairs. She saw her talking to Hugh and watched while he pulled her aside into the back room.

"That's not like Hugh to do that.Something is wrong, I can Feeel it in my tail."

Tigra reached for the hilt of the Widow, and looked around the room. Everything was the same. A few patrons came in while she was talking to Kara andd Kirjath, but she did not sense anything wrong. Sniffing the air she sensed that asomeone was hiding their true secent, but she was not sure who it was.
,br> "Kara . Something isn't right. Hugh wou7ld never pull anyone in the back room unless there is troulble. The trouble will not start in here -the Inn is too magical for that. Let's wait until Guen get's back and see what Hugh had to say"

[Guen]

Moving casually to join the group, Guen grasped Kirjath's arm in welcome.

She then spoke quietly-"Keep your faces guarded and listen to me! Jarg has men in town. Bran has brought a warning. I fear we must leave without Sand. I will leave word with both Hugh and Bran for him to follow.

Kirjath, girls, did you get what we needed? I want you to keep laughing and slowly go your seperate ways-some up stairs, some for a stroll. Bran and I will have the animals by Doug's gate, in half a candle. Be ready to ride hard. Tigra, do you need a mount? If not I leave the one mare here for Sand to follow us if he is able.

Luck and Strength! The Great Adventure begins! Go now , with Blessings on your heads. Until we meet again."

With a compasssionate look at each, Guen slipped out to find Bran, without drawing attention to herself.

[The Strangers]

Setting his tankard of ale down and wiping his beard, the thin man in desert robe, said-"Look now, they're the group by the fire."
,br>With studied casualness the older man looked at the happy group at the table near the fire." Where is Lady Guen?" he asked.

Eraas, the thin man , replied. "I haven't seen her all evening, she is here though-that damned war Steed of her's in the stable. and I've had to wear scent to keep her Hound from catching me!"

Eraas had not been happy with this assignment. Mal`e allowed a small smile to cross his features. Working with Eraas was like being married, he whined so much.

They settled in to watch the unsuspecting companions. Desert robes hid the surcoats of warriors. The crest of the Shere was emblazoned on their chests, under the safety of the robes.

*This had been a search of several years , once they heard rumours of her survival. And here the Lady was , gathering warriors in an attempt to destroy the Lord! What a fool. *

Mal`e would have gone as far and as fast as he could to get away, as far away as he could from Jarg.

A movement caught his eye. "There!" He told Eraas."That has to be her. She has the look of her Father about her. "
,br> They watched as Guen visited with the landlord, and then spoke gaily to the group. She then moved off into the kitchen.

Mal`e was worried. Unable to do Evil here, he was afraid she would slip away. He had a great fear of the consequences if she was lost. Lord Jarg was not the, ah, forgiving type. He planned to watch closely, when she left the Inn.

[Guen ] Walking quietly out into the kitchen yard, Guen headed for the back alley to the stables. She waited to catch Bran alone. After he had given his warning, she immediately started checking the packs on the mules and the horses feet and tack.

Looking over she saw that Bran had his Gray gelding saddled. "Oh, noooo! Young man -you are not going!"

Bran, his red temper showing, put hands on hips and faced the taller woman down.

"Guen, you may stop me now, but I can always come after you and you know that I will!"

Guen stood looking at the determined youngster a moment, then replied. "On your head be it. Bran, You have the skills, but I would leave something of my Spirit here in safety. Sara keeps the Elf Child for me. I can not but wish that you would remain here, too."

In answer, the friend mounted his gray and grabbing the leads of the mules and extra mounts, he headed toward the East Gate.

Mounting Hai'nn, Guen followed Bran toward the gate. As they wound through the back streets and alleys that Bran chose, she realized that she would be glad of the his solid strength on their journey. He also had a way with people , that she sometimes lacked.

Drawing near the gate, they caught sight of Doug, Tigras friend. There was no sign of the others as yet.
Leaving Bran holding the horses and mules in a side alley, Guen walked up to Doug, and with a smooth voice asked, "Do you know me Soldier?" Watching him to see if Tigra had contacted him yet , she waited his reaction.

[Bran]

Leading the Lady through the back ways, he trembled when it hit him that he was really going. All his life he had wanted to belong-somewhere or to something. Now, he was a part of the fight. And Guen had praised his abilities!

Waiting while she approached the Gate Keep , he was wary watching over his shoulder. The men he had seen were Dark, no doubt of it. He saw Raza slip into the shadow by the Gate.

Bran learned a lot watching how Guen and Raz positioned themselves. They looked at ease, yet they each had their back covered by a wall, with at least two avenues of escape possible. it was now a waiting game to see if the others made it. They would have to move on soon, the Dark Ones were too likely to find them if they stayed

[Guen]

Guen saw Doug's eyes shift to indicate the shadows down the street behind her. Leaning back indolently, as if she were flirting she scanned the area. Seeing nothing, she raised an eyebrow at Doug.

"What say you , Captain? Would you like to walk a little with me?" Guen even put a little twitch in her walk as she stepped into the part.

The man , surprised, smiled at her, then realization hit.He too, began to act. Maintaining his smile he put an arm around her waist, and drawing her close moved into the alley. To all intents and purposes it looked as if they had planned a short dalliance.

Once out of sight, she grabbed Doug's shoulders in a tight grip. "Have Tigra, Kara and the Warrior Kirjath come through here yet? What of a young, sandy colored man?"

Half shaking the man, her voice was agitated. When he assured her they had not been to the gate that evening, she stood still for a moment. He added, "And, Lady, I would not be forgetting Tigra. We've known each other a while", he said with a soft smile on his face. *AH, so that is how it is!* Guen was glad , for Tigra. Thinking rapidly the desert girl came to a decision. "All right Doug. For Tigras sake , will you do something for me?" The stalwart man nodded. "I will and gladly, Milady. You have but to ask. "

Guen told him about the two men they were evading, then asked him to hold the mares for those to come, yet. "Tell Tigra we will meet them in the clearing by the Pool of Mirrors. I believe she knows the place." Giving Doug her hand in farewell, she roughed her hair and undid a few strings of her jerkin. She looked well tousled by play. Raising a hand in good-bye for a lover, she moved to the place Bran was waiting. "They are not here yet." She cursed.

With a hard face, she said -"Mount up , Boy and be ready to ride as you have never done, once we leave the gates behind." Hai'nn sensed the anger in his mistress , as she swung up. He caracoled for emphasis on how ready he was to fight, but she calmed him. * Not yet, my valiant Friend. But soon!*

[Kirjath]

Kirjath arrived at the appointed place, but found none of his companions there. He spotted some of Guen's horses off to one side, so he was certain that she had been here or was close. Unsure if he had been followed, he wasn't familiar with the town of Monfort, but he knew how to move from shadow to shadow and in silence. He had left the Inn on pretense that the ale was stale there and would find better ale in another inn. Thinking about that brought a slight smile to his face. Kirjath never drank town made spirits and never would. Kirjath stood there by the horses unsure of what to do next

[Sandanamous]

Great wings beat against the thick night air. Then they faultered. *Stupid dragon! Had to go on a 'brief' hunting trip! Stupid, STUPID, _STUPID_!* They were probably gone! No matter how quickly he had left the battle, even neglecting to heal himself, he knew they were gone. He stopped berating himself, when he realized he had to admit, there had been no way for him to know that contengency of undead was camping out down at his hunting sight . . .

His wing beat faultered again, and an angry red gash reopened, dripping fire-red blood down his membranes. They'd ambushed him, while he was stalking his prey. Forty to one . . . it had taken him too long, and cost too much blood, decapitating them all. Wincing, pearl white teeth gleemed shallowly. Almost there . . .

Finally! The broad expanse of Montfort spread beneath him, and he angled toward the Dragon's Inn. Landing heavilly, a hip wound complained, and he groaned.

Turning his long, marbelized snout he made sure no one was looking. Then he Shifted to his human form, which he had re-chrisened Sand, at the half elf's request. Instantly he felt better, every flesh wound was smoothed away, and his dark bronze skin sheened. Quickly, he ran into Dragon's Inn, sliding over to the bar, and urgently asked for Hugh.

The kindly inn keeper hurried over, instantly recognizing the unique young man. "Sand-something, isn't it?" Sand nodded. "Well, your friends were very concerned . . . left you a horse, and a message to meet up with them at the gate."

The young man nodded gravely. "I am glad they did not believe me a deserter. I only meant to be gone ten minutes." He touched the pouch of money Guen had given him, now slung about his human neck.

Giving his profuse thanks, Sand ran out to the stables, finding the beautiful sand-brown mare. He grinned briefly, so that Guen had a sense of humor . .

.. Gently, he placed a hand on her soft muzzle, leading her without a word. Once back out in the open, he again Shifted. Speed was imperative, and it would take half the time with him flying to the gate. Weight pressed his four talonned limbs to the ground, and he reached out to the mare with one huge paw. The horse looked trustingly into his fiery eyes, as his talons closed about her middle. Drawing her up, he launched into the air. Wounds healed by the Shifting, he made good time, cuddling the mare to his broad chest. Dragons, Sandanamous espetially, usually had a special bond with animals. He was able to calm her equine mind, blocking the fear urges so that she could enjoy the sensation of flying. With that thought, he named her Pegasus, and told her so in a booming, musical voice.

Wind whistling in his long nostriles, Sandanamous arched his supple neck down. Scouring the city with his long vision, he spotted an orange and black figure that could only be Tigra. He couldn't find the others though, and that worried him. They had found a need to split-up . . . ,br>
The moon caused his draconic shadow to slide over the roofs of the sleepy city. Reflexes caused his head to jeark up, as he spotted the tops of Guen, and another, unknown, young man. Relieved, he dove, landing with a muffled thump, behind a large building. No one saw him. Looking down at Pegasus, she nickered softly, and he set her down. She waited patiently as he shifted, and trotted forward obligingly, when he was finally on her back.

Leaving the darker shadows, Sand headed out into the dark night. Urging Pegasus forward, he hailed Guen eagerly. "I am still a part of your company, if you are willing to be patient!"

When he got close enough, he leaned toward her, and whispered, "And you might just be more willing, when you know that I took out some band of undead, indubidably part of your foe's army . . . " Sitting back upright, he checked his sword, then extended a hand to Guen's companion. "I am Sandanamous, or Sand . . . depending on how good your toung is."

[Guen]

Sand's hail took Guen by surprise. the beautiful young man said"I am still part of your company , if you are willing to be patient!" As he introduced himself to Bran, despite his good nes about the undead, Guen growled between her teeth-"I don't know whether to kill you or hug your neck, after your disappearing act!"

Then , relenting , she held out a hand in welcome. "Are you healed then, after such a skirmish?" she asked with real concern.

[Sand]

Sand winced under the admonishing, then grinned. "You forget, perhaps, my nature? It was painful, yes, but when I Shift, all flesh wounds are healed. Besides, Forty? A large number , yes, but I have taken out as many as a hundred. Well, not-undead..."His white teeth stood out in the night as he continued to smile, revealing the unusually sharp and pointed eyeteeth.

"Oh,"he added,"I took the liberty of naming this fine steed ...I hope Pegasus is acceptable?"

[Guen]

Guen gave a short nod, wondering at the angst of the young man, dragon tho he might be. It would take all her patience to deal with the exuberent young creature. Then she spoke to Haa'in.The powerful war steed tensed muscles for the call he knew would come.

They moved slowly at first, Guen leading out , Bran following with the remaining mare and the two laden mules in tow. The mules were of Guen's stock, also, so he wasn't worried about their ability to maintain the pace, if they needed to flee.

Bran, looking over his shoulder noticed Kirjath. with a desert whistle, he got Guen's attention. The Lady followed his gaze. A bright smile lit her face a moment, hidden rapidly. With a subtle movement she positioned the string so that the mare would be with in the Warrior's reach if he chose to come with them now. She knew that Doug would find him, if the Warrior missed the mare.

Continuing a slow pace , they had almost made the Gate, when she saw the two Dark Ones. "DAMN!" Clapping knees to Hai'nn, she called out to Bran,Sand and Raz. "It's time!" The great stallion , was through the gate, with a mighty leap-Bran right behind on his fast gray. Once clear of the Gate, Guen kept the pace for a full candle. Then alternating between trotting and a fast lope they headed toward the Mirror. Guen turned once in the saddle to determine if Kirjath had joined them.Seeing him mounted on the fastest mare, she got aback to the business of travel.

[Sand]

one hand on his sword, the other lightly clasping unnessecary reins, Sand marveled at the smooth gait of the powerful Pegasus.

[Narrator]

Meanwhile back at the inn.

Tigra and Kara was trying to think of a way for them to leave without being noticed. "We could just walk out, but if anyone was watching us, they would know that we are headed out . Guen and Kirjath are already at the east gate by now. We need to think of something quick", Kara said. Tigra started looking around the inn to see if anyone was watching. Everyone was ether playing cards, telling tales of lost battles , or just sitting and drinking their ale. "I know what we can do to get us out of her", and Kara whispered in her ear. "This is what we will do".......

[ Tigra/Kara]

"What do you mean you forgot it", Tigra yelled at Kara.

Everyone in the inn turned to see what was going on. Even the two strangesr near the back, turned to see.

"Well how was I to know you wanted it right now. You didn't tell me that. Hell, I am not a damn mind reader you know. And IF I was, it would be hard to read a mind as small as yours".

Kara raised her voice so that all could hear. Tigra reached for her sword about the time Kara reached for her staff. They could hear some of the patrons in the Inn saying "Fight..Fight".

Hugh ran over to the girls and placed himself between them. "Ladies, please, no fighting. You both know if you draw your weapons, the inn will in case you in a bubble, and I for one will not let you out. Now I know you both can work this out. Kara, what ever you forgot, I want you to go get it. Tigra, I want you to go up to your room, and cool off, until Kara gets back her. Now both of you scoot".

Hugh took Tigra by the shoulders and lead her up to Kara's room. He turned in time to see Kara finish her drink, and watch as she threw the glass into the fire, watched as she walked out , with Rolf on her tail. "That's strange", Hugh thought, "Why didn't Rolf come to protect her"?

[ Tigra ]

Pushing Tigra in to Kara's room, he sit her on he bed and said "What has gotten into the both of you? Kara is your friend. You shouldn't be fighting over anything right now , with the trouble that Guen has". Tigra got up from the bed and closed the door. With a smile on her face, she said "Hugh , your as sweet as ever. We were not fighting. It was the only way we could figure to get out of the Inn without someone following us. Kara is headed to the east gate with her horse, and I was hoping to sneak out of the kitchen, but you brought be up here. I cant go back down now, without raising suspicion on myself". She looked at hugh, and saw a big smile. "What are you smiling at. I am trapped here, with no way out. Hugh shook his head, and said " If you would quit talking, I will tell you why I brought you here. now sit, and listen to me". With a deep sigh, Tigra sat back down on the bed and waited for Hugh's exclamation.

"Ok, the reason I brought you up here was because Guen already went out the kitchen door a while back. If you went out the same way, they would know Guen was gone. Now, if you look out the window, you will see a tree. Its about eight feet away from the window. With your build, I know you would be able to make the leap", and he blushed when he said "your build". Turning and looking out the window, Hugh said " I knew that Kara could never do it, but you could. No one will see you jump or climb down. If you go along the east side of the tree, you will see an alleyway .Follow it, and it should take you out to the east gate where Kara will be there waiting for you. I told Sara to let her know that before she left.

Tigra jumped up and gave Hugh a big hug, and a kiss on the cheek. "Your something else Hugh. If you were not married" . ..and she let the rest of her words slide. Hugh knew what she was going to say, and added " I know Tigra, But I am, and I am very happy. Now go, before someone thinks we are doing something we are not. After I step out, throw that pitcher of water at the door. It will add to the flavor of the fight". Hugh started to step out when he saw Kara's backpack. Throwing it to Tigra, he slammed the door and said " You heard what I said. Now stay in there until Kara returns", and he locked the door and starts to walk away. Everyone in the Inn heard the pitcher being thrown against the door and a loud growl, which shook the walls.

Walking down the stairs Hugh said," That is one angry huntress. I would not bother her for a while Sara if I was you", and he winked.

Tigra walked over to the window and looked down. "Not a bad drop, but I think Hugh might be right. I can leap over to the tree and sneak down into the alley". Placing Kara's back pack over her strong shoulders, she jumped up on the window sill. Sniffing the air, and not smelling anything alive, she bunched up her legs, took a deep breath, and jumped. She looked like a big cat jumping from limb to limb, until she found her way to the alleyway.

"Hugh said to follow it until I hit the east gate. I hope Doug is there. I would hate to miss him and not tell him good-bye".

She followed the alley way, turning left then right, and sometimes she thought she was back where she started. "I hate the back alleys. I need open spaces. feels like I am stuck in a long cage".

Holding onto the widow, and placing the back pack high on her shoulders, she kept walking until she heard voices. Slipping into some shadows, she moved slowly until she could see who was talking.......

[Kara]

Before she was able to get out of the inn, Sara stopped her. Pulling her close, Sara said "Kara, Hugh is taking Tigra up to your room. From there she will be able to sneak out and meet you at the east gate. You are to ask for Doug. He is a sergeant on duty, and he can help you until the rest arrive".

Kara looked at Sara and smiled. "So you knew it was just an act. But how"? Sara looked down at Rolf and scratched his ears," Rolf did not try to come between you and Tigra. If you were in real danger, Rolf would be right by your side, and not laying on the floor by your feet. You need to give credit where credit is due. Now remember to ask for Doug near the east gate. He will help".

Kara thanked Sara for the info and headed out to where she had her horse tied up. Rolf was right on her heels and said * I hope that whoever saw that did not pick up on what Sara saw. Lets head out to the gate. I can follow Guen's scent and get us there faster *.

Kara saddled up and placed her staff so it would be comfortable to ride and head out. " Ok Rolf, lets get out of here. Show me where Guen is". Rolf sniffed the air and caught Guen's scent. Kara followed him around the back streets of the city. Some of the places she saw were in need of dire repair. " Be on the lookout Rolf. It looks like we are in the rough part of town. Kara saw a few people, but most turned their back on her, once they saw her riding a war horse and following Rolf.

Smiling, she kicked the horse in a smooth gallop. She felt comfortable on back of the horse, and she patted her neck. "Remind me to get you a name once we get things settled for camp tonight. "Horse" doesn't cut it". She looked small on the large steed, almost like a doll. The mare was at least twenty five hands high, and knew what she wanted to do before she did or said any thing. "Guen has taught you well , my pretty", she said and followed Rolf.

What felt like hours, she finally saw Rolf stop and saw his hair stand out on his back. "We must be getting near the gate. Rolf, Its all right".

Stepping off of the mare, she walked up to where Rolf was standing. There near a gate stood a few men. They were soldiers watching the east gate. Taking a deep breath, Kara motioned Rolf to stay, unless there was trouble. She placed the reins down by Rolf, and walked up to the first soldier and asked with a soft voice and a smile, "Is there a Doug around here? Tigra told me that he would be here".

The soldier stopped and looked at her with a big smile . He stared at her, and was about to say something when a large man grabbed him by the shoulder and spun him around. She watched as the first soldier started to say something, but his eyes became large and he saluted the man that grabbed him. "Put you arm down man. You do not salute a Sergeant. Now get back to your post". Shaking his head he said under his breath "Damn new bees".

Looking at Kara, he smiled and said " I over heard you saying that you were asked to talk to Doug. Might I ask why would you need to talk to him". Kara smiled back and said " I was told by Tigra, that he would be here and would be able to help me". The Word Tigra made the mans eyes light up.

He smiled more and said "You must be Kara. I have a message from Guen . You are to find her at the clearing by the Pool of Mirrors. I believe Tigra knows the place." She has left a few horses out side the gate, for whoever needs one. I know Tigra does not need a horse. She would rather run than ride". Laughing Doug said " I have seen her out run the fastest horse we had one time. Those were the days"............

[Tigra]

Tigra waited until she could get closer to who ever was talking. She knew she was getting close to the east gate. The smell of the forest was lingering in the air. The smell almost made her run out and into the forest, but with the luck she was having, she would get an arrow in her back by some greenhorn soldier.

Stepping out of the shadows , she saw Doug laughing and telling Kara one of his tales about her. "And what kind of lies are you spreading about me this time", Tigra said and smiled with one hand on her sword, and the other holding Kara's back pack. "Tigra", Kara and Doug said at the same time. "Doug was just telling me that you do not like to ride" Kara said.

Walking up and moving between Doug and Kara, she said, "And what else has he said about me"? And she placed her tail under Doug's nose. The tail made Doug sneeze and he pushed her tail away.

"Damn it Tigra, you know that tail of yours makes me sneeze. One of these days I am going to cut it off and make a belt out of it", and he reached for a small dagger. Before Doug had a chance to grab the dagger, Tigras tail had it by the hilt and was waving it in front of his face. Laughing, Tigra said "You would miss that tail Doug, among other things", and she looked down. Doug followed her eyes and looked down to see the dagger was placed between his legs.

" Now then Doug dear, what were you saying about cutting something"? Tigra laughed and Kara just stood there with her mouth opened.

"Damn it Tigra , you know I was only kidding", and he grabbed the dagger away from her tail. Placing it back into it sheaf, he said " I was telling Kara that Guen said to meet her out be the Pool of Mirrors. She said that you would know where that is". Wiping sweat off of his brow, he pointed to the horses. "She left those for whoever needed them.

Kara gave him a look and he turned away. "We are coming back Rolf. I believe that. Fate has dealt us a good hand, and I shall see my parents murderer die in front of me".

Pulling Doug into the shadows, she gives him a warm, wet kiss. Her arms pulled him close, and he felt her nails starting to dig into his shirt. Pulling away, Doug said "Tigra, I am on duty. If someone was to come by and see us".... Tigra places a finger on his lips. "Doug. This may be the last time you see me. Do you want to wait, or do you want to feel my body against yours one more time? You know that it has been a long time, and I might not make it back. So"....

Doug stopped her in mid sentence. "What do you mean you don't think you will make it back"? Doug's eyes grew dark, and she saw a tear starting to form. "This is not the Tigra Swift I know. You are talking madness". Grabbing both arms and pulling her away from him , Doug said " I will not here of this. You will be coming back. NO! You are coming back. By the gods you better, or I will hunt you down and cut that tail off of you for sure". Pulling her close, he wipes a tear away, and says "Damn dust".

Tigra didn't know what to say. She brought both hands around his shoulders and pulled him close. "Ok, you big lug, I promise I will come back and finish what we started here", and give him another kiss. Doug pulled away and looked into her green eyes and said 'You damn well better. Now I think Kara is waiting for you. Now get, and don't look back here", and he smacked her on her butt.

Tigra smiled and started for the gate. Kara was close behind with Rolf right beside her. Tears started to fall in Tigras eyes and she started to turn back. Before she had the chance, she heard Doug say in a broken voice, " May the gods look over you and your, Tigra.

* Remember me in your dreams *, She-heard-Doug say.

Looking down, she saw Rolf running beside her. He sent the last message to her from Doug. * I will always carry you in my heart *,she sent back to Doug.

Picking up speed, she felt the forest calling her. With tears in her eyes, and looking up to see Kara riding beside her in a full gallop, she said "Damn dust" and looked away. Looking away , Kara said "I know what you mean", and wiped a tear away as well.

" From here we should catch up to Guen an Raz by night fall. The place Guen will be stopping at has a nice clearing for a camp sight", Tigra said. As the forest came up to meet them, Tigra started feeling a little better.

The smells and the sounds of the forest made her smile once more. "Home", she said to herself , and she felt like she was floating threw the air. "Looking up at Kara, she could not help but noticed that Kara felt the same way. She had a big smile in her face, and the wind was whipping her hair around her face. She held onto the house like she had been riding for years. The war steed stayed with Tigra and she saw that the horse was hardly breathing. " Guen can pick them" she thought to her self and raced on to the site........

[Eraas]

Watching the train of livestock escape through the gate with four riders and the great sight hound, the thin man cringed as Mal'e backhanded him ::Thawp!::

"How could you have not known that they had left the Inn ? You Imbecile!" The furious man growled. His face grew redder by the moment. Gathering himself, he wheeled about. "Let's get fresh mounts and go after them. Hurry, you fool"

The harder they tried to find mounts the more problems seemed to develop. They were told theat horses which looked perfectly sound were lame, or old, or already hired out.Within a candle mark, they had been turned down by every stable or livery in town. Standing in the Market, they were approac by a scroungy old man. he looked down on his luck and most avoided him as he walked toward the two Strangers.

He staggered up to them and stauck his reeking , snaggle toothed face in thier's.

"Having a hard time finding mounts tha seems to be- could find theesome id tha payest me?"

With a silly giggle the creature limped off, looking over a shoulder at them.

Mal'e glanced at eraas,then shrugged.

"what other choice have we? If we loose her Jarg will kill us, most unpleasantly." Eraas thought to himself*And that's a choice?* as they followed the strange being.

In a dilapadated shed the creature showed them two horses that were at best ride-able.

"knowest thou why tha coudst not find? The Lady has joined with all of her kind. She doeth good to one and all...And that, Dark strangers, was tha Fall."

Tossing a coin at the loathesome thing, then knocking him over as they rode by, the two rode out- only to be delayed a long and weray hour while the Sargent of the East Gate, one "Doug" ,sent to the Castle to verify their papers.

"Never will we return to that Hell Hole again! That witch has bespelled them all! I will see it fired to the ground for this day!" Mal'e thundered as they ride toward where their troop was bivoacked.
