Show Review

1/26/00 - Funk Dat, the Unsinkable Mr. Marden, Wheelie, the Royal Noise Brigade

I was looking forward to this show for a while, man. My two favorite local bands, Wheelie and RNB, sharing the same stage. I went with the biggest group ever: Clayton, Joe, Zack M., Duckie, Ed, and TSR. Well we got there after Funk Dat had left the stage, and everyone I talked to said they sucked (no offense to them, it's jsut the truth, I didn't hear em). But after them, UMM started their set. They didn't seem too promising when they got on stage ("We don't have one of our guitarists and our bassist today"), and their attitude didn't get much better. The singer seemed to not really want to be there, but whatever. They played some covers I knew: Mustard Plug, Reel Big Fish, and I really can't remember what else. I liked the other songs they played too, but it was something about them, I guess they didn't seem to like me or something. The guitar player had a Radiohead shirt on, so while they were up on stage I yelled "PLAY RADIOHEAD!" and got a few weird looks from some of the band members. Then, after the show, I came to give him a high-five and he kinda ignored me and I said I loved his pickguard, which was checkerboard, and he was like "what the hell man", whatever that meant. So those guys aren't too high in my opinion right now.

During the break in-between UMM and Wheelie, I met this really cute girl named Sarah. Just thought I'd tell you that. Well Wheelie came on and they were spectacular. They started out with a few songs that I didn't know, then played some new songs. Then came the ones I did know! They played Poot Butt, No One Has to Know, and So Far Away. It was rockin, let me tell you. They played a few more songs and ended with Spend the Night, which is great (at the end with the HOO-HOO! HOO-HOO-HOO!). These guys will definitely be missed when they move to CA...

Next came the creme of the crop! The Royal Noise Brigade took the stage and there were hordes of people on the dancing floor. This would have been okay, if we would have had enough room and everybody would have danced or at least moved or something. Well, it was a great set anyway. I managed to snag it from Tim at the end of the show. Here goes:

1. Intro Song
2. Mr. Black and White
3. On the Beat
4. Evil Swing
5. Good For the Good Times
6. Espanol/Apache
7. Why Do All...
8. Teddy Boy
9. We Don't Play Rap
10. The Dance
11. King of Style
12. John Lennox
13. Rudie Can't Fail
14. Girl I Used to Know (omitted for time)
15. Nite Klub
Then as an encore, they played Orange Peel Mafia. It was a good and very tiring show. Oh, and there was a special appearance by Dan McKinney on Hammond Organ, it really added to the sound, I liked it. The pit wouldn't have been that bad if people weren't jackasses and didn't do stupid stuff. One guy jumped off of an amp into the crowd and like knocked down two girls who luckily were very ok. I wasn't down with that at all. All in all, though, it was a great show for two of my favorite local bands! Plus I give props to all the people who danced, which was basically everybody! Thanks for not just standing there! I'm outie, later.
