Barbara Hepworth : Late Works 1970-75

Carvings

In the years before her death Hepworth gave a emphasis to works carved in marble, producing more than 50 marbles during this period. She wrote “marble is a noble material, it has a most exceptional sensitivity and as well as tremendous strength”. Hepworth also experimented, combining white marble with other hard and highly polished stones such as slate, coloured marble and Ancaster stone to utilise and enhance the textures and aesthetic qualities of the polished surfaces.

Hepworth, working within the confines of the truth to material principals throughout her career carefully, chose her materials and how she would go about carving them carfully. In conversations with Alan Bowness for the foreword to “The Complete Sculpture of …1960-69” she describes :

Choosing Materials:
Is it a challenge to carve a new stone?
“I adore it. First of all I prowl as usual, and then I try a bit and work I, and bring it to a polish and consider it. There are certain things I don’t like. I don’t like any thing too heavily marked, or mottled, and any thing pink drives me mad, because it is too suggestive of human flesh… And I hate very soft stones like bath stone because they don’t have any resistance.”

Carving:
“With wood, you are always considering the whole growth, which is vertical. You can carve accordingly up and down, or across…With stone you have to use your ears very sharply, listening how each hammer blow is going to take away the piece you want. If the sound it poor, you know you must move round, and if it is a bad sound you have to find out if there is a flaw any where. Marble is particularly delicate, and you can bruise it, you can stun it, you can change its colour by being clumsy.”
