Barbara Hepworth : Late Works 1970-75 - Bronzes

Barbara Hepworth : Late Works 1970-75

Works in Date Order

Hepworth had developed her own way of sculpting Bronze sculptures, she had only adopted the use of bronze during the late 1950's, to increase output and make her works, which until then had been carvings in wood and stone, more durable. Bronze also allowed hepworth to use size as a medium with which to communicate, in the last five years of her career producing the large multipart bronzes The Family of Man and Conversations with Magic Stones.

In the later part of her career Hepworth also experimented with constructions using combinations of aluminium, steel and brass, some times polished and other time brightly painted. The largest of these was the 1968 sculpture Construction (Crucifixion). Below Hepworth talks about her approach to making bronzes.

My Approach to bronze isnt a modellers approach. I Like to create the armature of the bronze as if Im building a boat, and then putting the plaster on is like covering the bones with skin and muscles. But I build it up so I can cut it. I like to carve the hard plaster surface. Even at the last minute I take a hatchet to it I hate modelling. I always know from the beginning what a work is going to look like.
