On Sunday, June 14th, 1903 around 5:00 p.m. a huge cloud burst broke over the hills south of Heppner. Creeks were rushing towards Heppner, picking up dibris from the farms on the way through. South end of Heppner, a steam laundry crossed the path of the water. The debris built up behind the laundry, damnig up the water until the building in Heppner couldnt stand the pressure and some fell down.

After the flood waters subsided, the task of burying and finding the dead had to start. Bodies were found under buildings, on the streets, in between buildings and dug out of debris. Several buildings were torn down by the flood, Main St. had a few buildings standing up. You might know them today, the Post OFfice, Murrays, Family Foods. Some bodies were never found or some never identified because of the damage they went through.
