The 1994 Sex in America Report

Look, it's a prety flower!

I'm Naked!
How much can we assume about the bedroom habits of others? Not a whole lot, it appears. A foray through recent sex surveys shows that people are doing more than rattling the box springs; they're rattling our preconceived notions about, among other things, the sexual tastes of staunch conservatives versus liberals, women versus men, and how sexual proclivities vary around the country. Ironically, sex researchers' socially acceptable brand of voyeurism serves to remind us that, in the end, sex is private. So when you look around at so-called regular folks, let your imagination run wild. For as the data shows, you never can tell what the most buttoned-up among them are really up to.
  Wedlock Gridlock
  • Average number of times a year married Americans have sex: 67.
  • Percentage of women who would like to have sex more often: 70.
  • Average duration of sexual intercourse: 10 minutes.
  • The majority of married men say they initiate sex to release sexual tension, whereas most women say they initiate sex for "love, intimacy, and holding."
  • Contrary to the stereotype of the randy husband and the headache-prone wife, studies show little difference in how often men and women refuse a spouse's sexual overtures.
  • 75 percent of men ejaculate within two minutes of penetration, while a woman needs, on average, 20 minutes of direct stimulation to reach an orgasm.
  • Only 41 percent of women say they feel comfortable asking their spouses for what they want sexually; 98 percent want "more verbal closeness" with the man they love.

  The Numbers Game
  • In all age groups, men report having sex more often than women report having it.
  • Nearly a fourth of all men have had sexual intercourse with 20 or more women in their lifetimes, while only 20 percent of women have had sex with more than four partners.
  • Women with the highest level of education have the greatest number of sex partners--twice as many as any other group of women.

  She Knows What She Wants
  • Women tend to initiate sex with their husbands about 1 percent more with every year of marriage.
  • Over half of the men say their partner's pleasure is more important than their own. Only a third of women feel the same way.
  • The proportion of women who say they have sex more for physical pleasure than for love increases with age.

  The Geography of Love
  • Midwesterners have had the lowest number of sex partners, with most reporting 30 partners or less, and only 3 percent reporting more than 60 partners.
  • Those who live in the West and the Northeast get around the most, with 23 percent of westerners and 20 percent of northeasterners having had more than 60 partners. As for southerners, only 8 percent have reached the 60-plus mark.

  I Like It Like That
  • 45 percent of men prefer having sex with some light available, compared with 17 percent of women.
  • 78 percent of women say music is a sexual turn-on.
  • 45 percent of married men, compared with 25 percent of married women, like watching their partner undress; although 95 percent of women say they like their partners to undress them before sex.
  • When asked what turns them on the most--dirty talk, X-rated videos, pornography, female masturbation, sexy lingerie, or other--92 percent of men put in a bid for the sexy lingerie.

  Broken Vows
  • Over one-third of men and one-fourth of women admit to having had at least one extra-marital sexual experience.
  • More self-described ultraconservatives have extramarital affairs than ultraliberals.
  • Of employed wives who've had affairs, 57 percent met their lovers at work.
  • For young women who've strayed, the average waiting period between tying the knot and having an affair is a little more than five years.

  Solo Pleasures
  • About 94 percent of males and 70 percent of females masturbate to orgasm. Some 7 percent of married women say masturbation is their preferred way to achieve an orgasm.
  • Of women who masturbate regularly, twice as many are career women as are homemakers. The number also increases with level of education.
  • 55 percent of men and 49 percent of women feel guilty after masturbating.
  • 26 percent of women 18 to 35 have used a vibrator at least once.

  The Satisfaction Story
  • About 10 percent of women have never had an orgasm, and between 50 and 75 percent can't achieve an orgasm during intercourse.
  • Percentage of women who say they've faked an orgasm: 56.
  • About 40 percent of women--versus 80 percent of men--have had orgasms while they're asleep, though the percentage for women appears to increase with age.
  • Most women feel more aroused around the time of ovulation.

  He Says, You Say
  • Of men 20 to 39 years old, 75 percent have performed or received oral sex. The same number also say they don't get enough oral sex.
  • About half of women who perform fellatio say they enjoy it.
  • Homemakers are far less approving of oral sex than career women are.

You Are Always on My One-Track Mind
  • Men between 12 and 19 years of age think about sex every five minutes. For those 40 through 49,the frequency drops to every half hour.

  Early Birds
  • 27 percent of men and 10 percent of women had sexual intercourse by age 15. Only 39 percent of women say their first sexual experience was pleasurable.
  • A woman's first sexual experience with a partner is likely to be with someone she loves.
  • 16 percent of women believe it's "crucial" and 31 percent think it's "preferable" for a woman to be a virgin when she gets married.
  • If they were getting married today for the first time, say 64 percent, they would rather be virgins.

  Measure for Measure
  • The longest erect human penis ever recorded: 13 inches.
  • Average length of an erect penis, according to American men: 10 inches.
  • Average length of an erect penis, according to American women: 4 inches.
  • A majority of women claim penis width is more important than penis length.
  • In about 20 percent of men, the penis points straight out when it's erect. For 5 percent it points down, and the rest say the penis points upward. Also, in 30 percent of men--political leanings notwithstanding--the penis points to the left, and in 6 percent it points to the right.

  Fitness Fun
  • Having sex burns off an average of 6.4 calories a minute immediately before and immediately after an orgasm.
  • Number of heartbeats per minute during sex 142 to 150, up from an average of 80.

  The Bewitching Hour
  • A psychologist studying a group of 137 male bar patrons discovered that they viewed women as significantly more attractive at closing time than they did at 9 P.M.

  Boy Oh Boy
  • No one knows why, but women and men who had a large number of premarital sexual partners are much more likely to have male offspring compared with those who had fewer partners.
