Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest for SNES A rather easy "lead you around by the nose" RPG from SquareSoft. You start out not knowing anything about what's going on, and have to follow everybody else's lead. Controls: Start button = Character menu screen X button = Save Game screen Y button = toggle "Auto/Manual" for sidekick A button = select option, enter area, attack in direction faced B button = cancel option, enter area, jump up, down, left, right = character & highlight movement TL & TR buttons = rotate through your weapons You start out alone, but often have a sidekick. The "Auto/Manual" switch lets you choose to have control over the sidekick's actions during combat. The sidekick has only one weapon at a time, and doesn't advance in levels. You have up to 12 weapons to choose from, although you start with only the Steel Sword. If you don't press a button when the game says to, as it starts, then it goes into a demo cycle with 3 different situations. The second one is actually very useful, as it shows you the route to the bottom of the Bone Dungeon, although you won't be level 25 like DemoPlay when you get there. The Cure spell just heals damage, and doesn't do anything for any conditions like "blind" or "sleep" or "confusion" or "paralyze". To fix those conditions you need "Heal". Go figure. And to bring back ALL HP, and even fix "fatal", use "Life". Skills and Spells you learn/get: (spells are learned from those red and silver boxes) Steel Sword - weapon - known at start Cure - White spell - go around back of NE house in Foresta Axe - weapon - from Kaeli after Minotaur Bomb - weapon - from Tristam in Bone Dungeon Fire - Black spell - in Bone Dungeon Quake - Black spell - in Focus Tower 2F Steel Shield- armor - bought for 200 in Aquaria Cat Claw - weapon - 1F Wintry Cave (choose as weapon, press and hold A button, move up rough walls) Heal - White spell - near end of Falls Basin Jumbo Bomb - weapon - replaces Bomb, end of Falls Basin Knight Sword- weapon - box B1 Ice Pyramid Blizzard - Black spell - 2F Focus Tower (3F entry S of Wintry Temple) Venus Shield- armor - same entry, need to use a bomb Battle Axe - weapon - bought for 500 in Fireburg Exit - White spell - won from a Battlefield E of Fireburg Mega Grenade- weapon - replaces Jumbo Bomb, locked house Fireburg Thunder - Wizard spell- won from a Battlefield W of Fireburg White - Wizard spell- box Volcano through hidden tunnel Moon Shield - armor - box Lava Dome Life - White spell - box Lava Dome Aero - Black spell - box Doom Castle B2 from Focus Tower 1F - B1 Giant's Axe - weapon - box Alive Forest Dragon Claw - weapon - from Tristam in Spencer's Place Meteor - Wizard spell- box Giant Tree 2F Cupid Locket- armor - bought in Windia Apollo Helm - armor - box NE of Dullahan, Mount Gale Flare - Wizard spell- box Pazuzu's 6F SW corner Excalibur - weapon - box Pazuzu's 4F E side Mobius Crest- item - box Spencer's Place Gaia's Armor- armor - box Mac's Ship B1 Aegis Shield- armor - box Doom Castle B2 You can always go all the way back to Foresta and sleep in the bed in the SE house to restore all HP and magic. Maximum amount of any item, including weapon ammunition, is 99. Chests (brown things) will not be considered opened if you try to open them with 99 of the item already. You get a free restore all HP and magic when you defeat a major boss to get a crystal, and just before you fight the last boss in the game. What to Do: After you defeat the Minotaur in the Level Forest, then the dinosaur at the bottom of the Dust Dungeon, the Level Forest is green again, and you can use the Axe to cut down the small trees. Saves you the hassle of beating up those Brownies and Slimes to get the Heal Potions. Monsters and chests, but not boxes, are replenished if you leave an area or dungeon or town and re-enter. Going between levels doesn't count. Desert Hags will do damage to you if you hit them with a hand-to-hand weapon, but not something thrown (Bomb) or shot (Bow) or magic (Fire). They don't like Fire... All monsters have at least 2 stages of damage visible, the bosses can have as many as 5! When you get to the Ice Pyramid, use the sword on the right statue, then head off to the right. You will have at least 3 encounters with monsters that you don't see first. The Magic Mirror is in the red chest at the end of the hall. Now you can see those pesky things! There are ?5? levels to the Ice Pyramid. When you first get to 5F, you should first walk north until you fall down to 4F, then fight once and open 2 chests and the box - the red box has better armor for you! Then go back left and fight once more to get access to 2 more chests and a trigger for the door out of there. Now go back up to 5F for real. You may think you're stuck in Fireburg. Go talk to Tristam in the Hotel again if you can't get into the house with the locked door. In the Alive Forest, while you may want to cut down ALL the trees you can, the ones to look out for are the little ones all by themselves. These turn into teleporters into those trees with the symbols on them, and each has a chest inside. Just know that when you go in one, all the little trees you cut down come back! Where to get Supplies: sidekick's ammo: 1F Bone Dungeon (either right or left, not center unless you want to clean out the whole screen, left is easier) Cure potions: Level Forest, Foresta SW house, Foresta S of SE house Heal potions: Aquaria SW house Refresher: Aquaria NW house Explosives: Focus Tower 1F Strange: In Wintry Cave 1F there's what looks like a blocked arch on the N side if you go all the way through without climbing using the Cat Claws. But bombs have no effect! Can only get Seeds from Bone Dungeon or buy them in Fireburg Hotel for 50 each. I still don't know what Refreshers do.
