Gérard's ABADDON FAQ version 1.0.4b.4, 2005-02-15, by Peter Karsanow PLAYING ABADDON v1.0.4b Download the game: ------------------ It's at http://www.iGerard.com Get the most recent version of Abaddon that's available! Versions up to 1.0.2 were extremely difficult, and 1.0.4 is finally playable although there's still a lot of saving and reloading. 1.0.4.a fixes a bug so a high Charisma does get you a discount in stores. 1.0.4b is supposed to fix some memory overruns, but it hasn't fixed anything for me; I thought it might be file compression in Windows XP, but turning it off for the whole folder didn't help. Although Gerard says he "toned the enemies down a bit", the only thing that I've noticed different from v1.0.2 is the HP for the two easiest enemies. With the additional map areas, there were also changes in where the monsters change from one group to another. The monsters that used to appear around the volcano closest to Antioch are no longer there. Only some of them even appear further away. However, the monsters that appear later in the game are even tougher than before, so you're definitely in for some level-building. And although Gerard says he gave the character more money, there's still only 33 DM in the chest in the castle, and additional monsters that you kill still leave 1/2 the money of the previous one. This FAQ will only mention some game problems in passing; there's a separate "problems with 1.0.4b" text file available on my website. Start the game: --------------- If you were able to get Abaddon to start one time, then it won't start again, try deleting the config.ini file and trying again. If it still doesn't work, try installing Abaddon on a ZIP disk and playing it from there - that worked for me! If you can't move the pointer on the title screen by pressing the up/down arrow keys, and Alt-Tab doesn't work, there's a good chance that Ctrl-Alt-Delete won't work either. Hope you didn't lose too much work when you have to reboot. I had to do this many times in v1.0.2, it seemed to depend on just how much you've done with the computer since last rebooting. This problem seems gone in v1.0.4, thankfully. Press the Enter key to skip the opening crawl anytime after the "Abaddon" letters are nearly off the screen. Generate a character: --------------------- Press the Shift key to reroll. The range of values is from 11 to 17, but these can be modified afterward. Keep rolling until you get numbers you can live with. A high Strength and Dexterity keep Gilead alive in combat at level 1. Constitution increases HP from level 2 on. Intelligence increases PP from level 2 on, and the number of points available for "buying spells" at the start. The others are of significantly less importance, although Charisma finally has an effect on buying items with the fix in v1.0.4a. If you were planning on using the trainer, so you have a reasonable chance of making it to the end of the game, better go read the last part of this file NOW before you go any further! You can take up to 3 points from any attribute and add it to others, as long as you don't go above 18. Press the space bar to lock in the numbers. Then choose a "Geneseed Type" from the list in the bottom right of the screen. This raises 2 attributes, with no maximum. Press the space bar again to lock in your choice. On the next screen, choose a "class" from Medicus, Biblius, or "of War" by pressing the space bar. I guess Gerard didn't think "Bellus" would be understood by all players of the game. There's no indication on the screen of the class you've chosen, but now you have to select Gilead's starting psychic powers or skills. I know they're supposed to be psychic, not magic, but they're essentially spells. Finally, given some number of points dependent on Gilead's class and Intelligence, choose his starting skills. I personally suggest getting LFaith so you can heal Gilead without wasting expensive Nano Healers, but others have different preferences. Once you've got some money, you can buy all the skills except LFaith, though. Press the space bar one last time to start the introduction. Gilead starts with the maximum HP and PP, including Constitution and Intelligence bonus, for his class. Unfortunately, besides holding down the space bar, there is no way to skip the introductory sequence before Gilead gets out of bed in the morning. Initial moves in the game: -------------------------- After the introductory sequence, have Gilead collect the 33 DM and a PSIDoc MK3 from chests in his castle. Then go out to the south from the ground floor to enter the city (5 buildings you can enter is a city?) of Antioch. Do NOT follow the guy who asks you to, until you're at least level 4 or higher; he's a Psi-Lord assassin and will end your game really quick at level 1 if you try to fight him. Also, do NOT talk to the little girl, or she'll take 10 DM from you. For now, just leave everybody in the town alone unless you've saved the game first. To get 1000 experience, go talk to the Bishop in the far right building, go upstairs and talk to Azrael, then the Bishop again. You've now got your first quest, but don't worry as you can take your time getting to it. The only things that you might be able to afford at the start of the game are some Fatigues (from the healing store) and another Nano Healer. You can get one Nano Healer from the chest in the upper left of the upper floor of the "whoopass" guy's house. But the chest in the bottom left corner has to wait if Gilead's strength isn't high enough. If Gilead (or somebody else in the party?) has a high Strength (16+), you can push the barrel near the bottom left corner in the upstairs of the "whoopass" guy's house. That will get you a L.A.W., which gives you a choice. First, you could sell it for 250, which is rather useful at the beginning of the game. Second, you could hold on to it for a really tough battle. As the dialogue with the Bishop mentions a weapon called LAW, it's strange that you can get one at the start of the game, and buy them later, but that doesn't complete the quest. Finally, check your equipment before exiting town, make sure you've equipped what you think you have (use the Equipment entry on the menu), and save the game. To get up to level 2, where things will get a lot easier, you have to suffer through a lot of tedious saving, fighting, and reloading. Restoration of all HP and PP costs 25 DM in the town. Later, when Lenna joins, one dead party member can be resurrected for an additional fee. And afflictions like Blind can also be cured for additional payment. But for now, you want to fight only 1 enemy at a time, and not save the game unless you take no damage or a small amount so you can risk another fight. Use LFaith, if you've got it, to heal 5-10 HP outside of combat. A Nano Healer is usually wasted if you use it for less than 30 or so HP. Your task now is to slowly accumulate money and experience to get to level 2. If you get more than 25 DM before being forced back to the healer in Antioch, you're doing well. If you have to dip into your initial funds to keep going, do so as a last resort. The game is rather difficult at level 1, but it can be done. Once you get to level 2, and have more HP and PP, as well as an additional +1 to hit (which may be effective in combat or not), it gets relatively much easier to handle the foes just outside Antioch. Even at level 2, you will still spend a long time walking back and forth outside Antioch, running from tough enemies and beating up on single ones or easy groups. The monsters outside Antioch, and as far as the east-west split to the south, are what I call "tier 1" monsters. The characters will get experience (EXP) as you'd expect for fighting multiple monsters in a group. However, money works differently. For each monster after the first, you get 1/2 the money of the money of the previous. For example, 1 Skullwalker is 6 DM, 2 is 9 DM (+6/2), 3 is 10 DM (+3/2), and 4 is 11 DM (+1.5/2). The Escape option in combat seems to work 100% of the time, unless you're in a boss battle. But when you get to the buildings in the ruined city later, against some of those monsters it's not 100% even with an 18 Perception. If you don't have Battle Rolls turned on in game options, you will wonder why characters do extra damage once in a while. It's because the game rolled a natural 20. Thankfully, monsters don't do extra damage when a 20 is rolled for them. The characters can also do more damage than you expect too, for some other unknown reason. For characters with a high Strength, the maximum weapon damage is modified in the Abilities screen, but it's even more than that. Gilead has the "PzrKst" option in battle, which operates much like Cleave did in earlier versions of the game. Now it can do truly huge amounts of damage, but the damage done to Gilead varies from 0 up to 20 or so. It seems that if Gilead misses, he takes more damage. Use PzrKst against tough monsters that you have to take down NOW. You can go talk to the little girl in Antioch when you have less than 10 DM to get a message about being a cheapskate. But at least the event (and the sprite) goes away without taking any of your money. If you have more than 10, she takes 10. Going from level 2 to 3, you may notice that you can start encountering groups of 3 or 4 monsters instead of just 1 or 2. At least Gerard didn't let that happen to level 1 players... At higher levels and in later areas, you can get up to 5 monsters. The "Hypno" effect wears off after combat, or when the affected character is hit, or after several rounds of combat. "Blind" stays until cured with an EYEDoc item. "Crazy" wears off after several rounds of combat; the character will randomly attack enemies or another character, possibly even themselves. "Poisoned" stays until the character dies, or until cured with an Anti-Toxins item. Unfortunately, dead can only be fixed by a healer in a town, or possibly the very expensive Revive skill. All these effects can be inflicted on the characters if they fail a "saving throw". This is shown on the screen as a 1-20 random value plus some bonus for the character's level and equipment, versus a fixed value for that particular monster's attack. In general, improving the saving throws with your choice of equipment should normally be second priority to AC, but it doesn't hurt. Lenna ----- At level 3 and higher for Gilead, you can think about the next step in the plot, which is to go south from Antioch. Take the east fork, and then start to head to the gap going northeast. Lenna will show up just as you enter the narrow passage. So SAVE THE GAME before going there! Gilead and Lenna (as a level 1 Adeptus Medicus) will have to fight 1 DemonDroid, and you can't run away. I was able to do this at level 3 with an Adeptus Medicus, and kept Lenna alive through sheer luck. If she dies, no big deal, just take her back to the healer in Antioch and pay extra. But characters don't get experience while dead. You don't have to have talked with Lenna in Antioch to get her to show up. I suggest you bring some extra armor and equipment for Lenna before getting her. In v1.0.4b, she appears with a Crowbar, Garbage Can Lid, Football Helmet and PlasSteel Vest for total AC 17. Lenna is an Adeptus Medicus with 9 Strength, 18 Dexterity (+3 AC), 16 Constitution (+1 HP per level), 17 Intelligence (+2 PP per level), 11 Wisdom, 14 Charisma, and 16 Perception. She starts off with only 9 HP and 10 PP, and in v1.0.2-1.0.4b can get at most only 7+1=8 HP and 5+2=7 PP per level. Because of a bug in v1.0.2-1.0.4b, her range for additional HP and PP is only 2-7 and 2-5, respectively, instead of 1-8 and 1-6. This same bug applies to Gilead's class too, and any other characters in the game, until Gerard fixes it. Lenna's "Nick" ability was reported to work better when enemies are low on HP. I haven't seen that, as I once tried over 20 times on a RazorBot that should have had only 1 HP left, and finally got the item. On the next combat, Lenna got an item on the first try from an undamaged enemy. It definitely succeeds more often when Lenna is at higher levels. Nick can even work when Lenna has no chance at all of hitting the enemy with her normal attack. You must go talk to the Bishop in Antioch for Lenna to appear out in the wastes. Unfortunately, this means you can't get Lenna that free 1000 experience. Now build up both Gilead and Lenna outside Antioch for another level or three. It's hard because experience is divided in half, and Lenna is too weak to help much at first. So she's best used to try to Nick items from monsters, or just Defend. With her 18 Dexterity, she may have a better AC than Gilead with the same armor. But she's got a lousy Strength, so I initially used her just for Nick and to finish off weak or damaged monsters. Her Crowbar weapon should be upgraded ASAP too. Spend your money on getting good armor and weapons for both characters. You should find that you start getting more items after battle as the characters get higher in level. Any items found will go into the last character's inventory. One "feature" in v1.0.4a and b is the Riot Gear available at Esdoc's shop for only 100. This is really excellent armor for the price; it's probably a typo for 1000 or so. Buy 2, and your party should now have AC over 20 each, making it much harder for monsters to hit them. However, with a natural 20 (and sometimes lower numbers), they will still hit no matter what, until the characters' AC gets up to 25 or so. What makes the game playable at higher levels is getting such a high AC that the characters can only be hit by psychic or poison attacks. The first Quest: ---------------- The areas to begin exploring are beyond the "Y" to the south of Antioch. The monsters get tougher (what I call "tier 2") immediately over the bridge if you take the west fork. But leave this area alone until you complete your mission to the ruined city. The numbers change but they're still tier 1 after you go through the pass where you got Lenna. Later the monsters become "tier 2" after you go through a SE pass several twists and turns later. However, there's a slight possibility of tier 2 monsters showing up in the tier 1 zone after the NE pass where you got Lenna. Before you go too far into this region, get and equip Gas Mask items on both characters. These will reduce the damage from enemy Pestil spells to only 2. For now, you can't do anything about Incendi, but when you get to the next town, you can buy an item that'll take care of that as well. If you remember the way to the ruined city from earlier versions of Abaddon (like v1.0.2), it's now a lot longer. Gerard blocked off the sideways "T" intersection that was there earlier, and added a lot more area to the map to lengthen your route. On the way to the city, you can go shopping and rest up at Bartertown. Check out the fancy new gear there at higher prices, and healing there starts at 35 domars. But strangely, the best weapons for Gilead and Lenna are still back in Antioch. One of the most useful items to buy in Bartertown is the PsyArmour; it will significantly reduce the damage the characters take from the various psi skills. The PsyArmour also replaces the Gas Mask you should have gotten in Antioch before encountering your first Crazy monsters. The PsyArmour should reduce damage from most enemy skills used on the group as a whole to 0 (Napalm) or 2 (Incendi, Fallout, Pestil). However, if the Incendi and Fallout skills are used on just one character instead of both, they may do more than 2 damage even with the PsyArmour. I've found that once both Gilead and Lenna are above about AC 25, you don't have to worry about them getting hit by monsters with up to +4 to hit. That still leaves the ones that use skills like Incendi and attacks like Inject Poison to harm you, and PsyArmour can help with all but poison and blindness. Sometimes, you'll see the characters miss when they should hit; my best guess is that the monster was defending and the AC was higher (at least 3) than normal. Or else there's another bug in the "to hit" calculations... Since having decent armor on the characters means they can't effectively use skills, I haven't mentioned getting any. I haven't tried playing the game as a "spellcaster", just an Adeptus Medicus. As that class has the lowest experience requirements, it seemed the best choice to me. If the "+1 to damage" is implemented correctly for an Adeptus of War, then maybe that class is worth playing too. Tier 3 monsters are found in the area north of Bartertown, and stop at the bridge far to the north of the town that leads west into thus far unknown territory. Tier 4 monsters start right after the bridge to the NW of Bartertown. If you're looking for a place to make money, the tier 3 zone is probably the best as long as you can avoid getting hurt too much by the Destructors and Psi-Lords. You won't be able to hit the Holo Ghosts until you get an extremely high "to hit" bonus (at least +10, maybe even more) through lots of levels or use of the trainer, or Gerard fixes the bug with only getting effectively +1/2 to hit each level. Once you've got PsyArmour, AzraelArmor and a Cyber Arm on both characters, and the best weapons available, it's time to do level building in the tier 4 zone. Again, the Holo Ghosts will be impossible to hit until you're already moved on to the ruined city, or maybe never, so just try to Nick items from them. Watch out for the PsykerBots as they are still annoying. And just rake in the experience from hordes of Slicer Dicers, which always come in a pair, sometimes with a PsykerBot. If Lenna has Nicked enough items for both characters, then you can speed up combat by just holding down the space bar. That will do the default "Assault" on the default target. After trying to play this game without cheating, I realized that an inordinate number of combats were in store to level up Gilead enough to get a reasonable hit chance against the upcoming monsters. So I tried again using the trainer, and found that I shouldn't have wasted as much time earlier before giving in. :( Before you go into the ruined city, Gilead should have stocked up on LAWs at Thor's in Bartertown. In v1.0.4b, these do 200 each to all enemies. Unfortunately, all the other consumable weapons will crash the game when used. So far, there's no monster that you can make money on by killing with a LAW. Just save them for HAL in the ruined city. Gilead should have at least an effective +14 or so to hit before you start trying to build levels in the ruined city. Otherwise, you will spend too much time trying to hit the monsters there, and give them too many chances to poison the characters. The Ruined City & HAL: ---------------------- The monsters in the city are "tier 5" and a significant step up in difficulty from tier 4. To avoid taking damage from normal attacks, something you probably haven't seen since you could afford decent armor, you'll have to upgrade armor again, regardless of the effect on ENC or Encumbrance. And like the Holo Ghosts in tier 4, you may have to hold off on level building in the city until you do some level building outside the city. Again, the problem is the low to hit bonus that's due to a bug. The Inject Poison attacks that a lot of the monsters in the city have is very annoying, and there's nothing you can do it about it now except stockpiling Anti Toxins or running from those encounters. Go to the SW corner of the city map, then up the stairs, and open the box to get a PortoDOC MK7. Whoopee. Go to the building near the NE corner of the city map, enter the glass door, and open the box to get the SanguineSword. Personally, I kept using the Force Hammer because of the bonus to hit. About halfway up the west side of the city map, open the box in the area that looks like a gutted store to get the CeramSteel Helm. This item is definitely a "keeper"! When you enter either the building where you get the SanguineSword, or the building in the NW corner, you'll be in the realm of "tier 6" monsters. Very nasty critters, these. The building in the NW corner of the city is where HAL is located. Walk up to the console in the wall, and answer the riddle correctly to open the passage to the next room. Repeat several times. OK, I'm sure you didn't start reading this document because you expected to NOT learn the correct answers to HAL's riddles. So here they are: Mountain A Dollar (very unfair to those not familiar with the currency) Two Human In v1.0.2, wrong answers summoned monsters. They still do in v1.0.4b, and the monsters are just 2 wimpy Rad Pools. I was expecting a bunch of the tier 6 nasties found in this area, or worse. You must walk up the middle to trigger the final dialogue and fight with HAL (come on! you knew it was coming...). SPOILER: HAL kills Lenna. SPOILER: Azrael shows up to help you fight HAL, and joins the party. Azrael: ------- He's a level 1 Adeptus Medicus. 24 HP, 16 PP. 9 Str, 18 Dex, 16 Con, 17 Int, 11 Wis, 14 Cha, 16 Per. Initial equipment is a ChainAxe, SHOCKSword, HK Helm and KybernetickAmr. Does 1-54 (!) damage, +1 to hit, AC 27, +1 HP per level, +0 psychic save. Has 3 Nano Healers and 1 Cyber Muscles. Knows LFaith and Incendi skills. DO NOT UN-EQUIP THE Chain Axe! If you do, you won't be able to re-equip it on Azrael. I guess Gerard somehow stuck it on him to start with. If you must take it off, then I suggest that you save all of Lenna's equipment (trade it to Gilead before triggering the HAL fight) and give Azrael the HK 14.5mm and other useful items. DO NOT UN-EQUIP THE SHOCKSword! If you do, it can only be equipped by Azrael as a regular weapon, not as a second weapon in the shield slot. Again, somehow Gerard stuck it on him to start with. Since Azrael starts with 2 weapons equipped, his damage is listed as the total of the two, e.g. 1-54. If you change the Chain Axe to HK 14.5mm, it becomes 1-70. Not bad for level 1, but not quite as useful as Lenna was. (sob!) Azreal starts with base saving throws of +7 for Bullet, Fire and Laser. AC is also 8 with no equipment, +3 for 18 Dexterity to give 11, plus for any armor. In combat, Azrael has the "MdBlast" ability, which seems to be an attack on all enemies that uses no PP. Not useful up here, when Azrael has such a low + to hit, but maybe against easier monsters, or once the + to hit goes up from a few levels. After HAL: ---------- Go open the box to the north to get Shoggoth Armor for Gilead. Notice that your Quest list has changed. Now you're supposed to go fight that Mordechai army with a LAW. Too bad that the only one you might have so far is from Antioch, unless you bought some. Make your way out of the ruined city to Bartertown for rest, resupply, and the best equipment for Azrael. Now, with maybe a short stop in Antioch, go all the way to the Mordechai camp that you weren't allowed to enter before. Just move a little to the left, and the game will take over and do the final movement and dialogue script. SPOILER: Fight Abaddon. Apparently no tougher than one that you can fight in the ruined city, though. Watch more text scroll by. No more to this game, unless you want to watch the flame effect scroll by forever. Rumors: ------- If you don't get the LAW after you kill HAL, leave and come back to find it. In v1.0.2 you should have 20-30 Robo Docs before fighting HAL, probably some Psi-Colas and Nano Healers too. Go in at least level 6, even higher is better. Gerard says you might get Lenna back. MONSTER INFO: ============= HP is how much total damage must be done to the monster to kill it. Overkill is allowed. AC is how high the characters have to roll on a d20, plus their own "+ to hit" value, to hit this type of monster. "$" is how much money one monster of this type will drop. In mixed groups or just multiple monsters of the same type, each additional monster will add only 1/2 the amount that the previous one did. There's an invisible hierarchy of which monster pays out first. "XP" is how much experience you get for killing one monster of this type. Thankfully, this works the way you would expect for multiple monsters. But when there are 2 live characters in the party, experience is divided in half. The "+ to hit" is what the monster shows in combat as a bonus for trying to hit the character(s). However, either the monsters get a hidden bonus to hit, or the characters get hidden AC penalties sometimes, because these numbers don't always work. "Items" listed above are what you can get with Lenna's "Nick" ability, or rarely get after a combat with that type of monster. So far, only the Psi-Lord, Rad Pool and MedusaBot don't carry an item, and there is otherwise only one item per monster. "Notes" includes special attacks and the psi skills this monster type can use in combat. If the monster's special attack has a known value that the characters must "save" against, it is shown in parentheses, e.g. Hypno (18). Some of the data below is incomplete. For example, I haven't nailed down the exact amount of HP for a RadPool. So ">79,<=82" means that I saw a total of 79 damage didn't take it out, but 82 did. This assumes that all monsters with the same name have the same AC and starting HP. ITEM INFO: ========== "*" before and after the price for an item indicates that this item is either found or starts in a character's inventory, and can't be bought in the game. But since stores buy any item at 1/2 price, this is the price it would be if you could buy it. "Damg" is the unmodified damage range for the weapon. "Spd" is the weapon speed. Under "Who", GLA stands for Gilead, Lenna and Azrael, and "-" if that character can't equip/use that item. All 3 start with some equipment, with Gilead and Azrael given unique items. In Abaddon, higher Speed and lower Enc seem to be better. Higher damage and AC are definitely better. Some of the effects mentioned in the item descriptions aren't implemented in v1.0.4a. It's possible that Enc isn't implemented either. Weapons marked as "2-handed" must be equipped with nothing in the character's shield slot. In the Books & Scrolls section, the Level listed is the minimum character level needed to be able to Use the item to learn that skill. In case there's a difference between classes, my results are for both Gilead and Lenna as Adeptus Medicus. Many times, I just know two levels where it worked and didn't work. "Esdoc" is the shop with a sword sign in Antioch. "Blaine" is the man on the right side of the shop with a cross sign in Antioch. "Bard" is the old man near the entrance of the shop with a jar sign in Antioch. "Geller" is the man to the right of Bard, and "Tweed" is the woman to the far right in that shop. "Thor" is the blacksmith in the upper right of Bartertown. "Oisan" is the potion and weapons shop in the upper left. In the lower right corner, "Zaius" is on the left, and "Prospero" is in the middle. SKILL INFO: =========== The psychic powers/magic spells in Abaddon are called skills in the game. Aside from picking up to 5 for Gilead at the start of the game, and the ones that Lenna and Azrael know when they join the party, all others must be learned from items. See above in the "Books & Scrolls" part of "Item Info" to see where you can buy the items that teach characters the various skills. This section just covers what the skills are supposed to do. Psychic Points (PP) are used when a character uses a skill. You can restore PP by getting healed at a healer or using a Psi-Cola item. The 5 skills marked with a "*" below are those that Gilead could learn at the start of the game, depending on his class choice and Intelligence. The 2 skills marked with a "&" below are those known by Lenna and Azrael when they first join Gilead. While in the "Skills" screen, you can use the arrow keys to move to spells and display their data. Press Enter, move the arrow elsewhere, and press Enter again to move a spell entry around. Either the second tier of enemies is unaffected by Gilead's skills, or wearing armor (even with 0 Enc) severely penalizes the effectiveness of skills. On 2004-08-09 the program was re-done to work specifically for Abaddon v1.0.4b, and I wouldn't try it with any other version. As it wasn't documented in the release that I got, but may be some day, here's how and when to use the trainer: Start up the Abaddon game, start a new game. When you're at the character generation screen, but haven't pressed the spacebar to lock in the values, press Alt-Tab to switch out of Abaddon, and then start the trainer program. You'll get a message the first time that you start the trainer. Now enter the desired stats for Gilead in the boxes in the trainer, and press the "Set" button for each one you want to use. You can also enter values now to boost Gilead's starting experience, Lenna's starting experience, and the starting amount of cash (domars). Again, press the "Set" button for each one you want to use. Continue with character generation, and the beginning of the game. When you give Gilead or Lenna experience, they will only go up a level after a combat or when receiving the experience bonus from the bishop in Antioch. So, you'll have to put them through battles just so their level can catch up with their Experience value. If you try to use the trainer with a saved game, you will only be able to visibly tinker with the experience and domars, and only the first word (0 to 32767) of those values. The trainer won't let you Set values outside that range. The stat values for Gilead can be Set, but you won't see them change in the game; modifications like AC bonus will change, but you may not even see the difference. The trainer isn't meant to work on saved games or once you've started playing Abaddon. Gérard's Abaddon & Design: (c) 2004 Gérard Prudhomme. All Rights Reserved.
