| Meg Whitman joined E-Bay as President and CEO in March 1998. Since that time, she has led the company to become the worlds online marketplace and the number one consumer e-commerce site. Megs expertise in brand building, combined with her consumer technology experience, has helped E-Bay evolve into a leading company that is reshaping how commerce takes place around the world. She has led the company successfully in the face of competition, especially that coming from Amazon, Yahoo, and Lycos. Meg Whitman has a lot of experience prior to joining E-Bay, which explains where she gets her great sense of business. She received a Bachelors degree in economics from Princeton University and went on to get her M.B.A. from Harvard University. She has worked with many companies prior to E-Bay, where she has had great success. Meg began her career with Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati where she worked in brand management and right before she got to E-Bay she was General Manager of Hasbro Inc.s Preschool Division, where she was responsible for global management and marketing of two of the worlds best know childrens brands. Among her many other achievements, Fortune magazine ranked her number one most powerful women in business in 2004 and Worth Magazine ranked her number five on its 2004 list of best CEO. In a time when a lot of Net companies are faltering, Meg Whitman has done a tremendous job at keeping E-Bay afloat and pushing strongly ahead. When Meg Whitman took over, E-Bay was relatively small but now it is on track to gross more than $20 billion in sales. It now sells everything from collectibles, to cars, to even real estate. Meg Whitman is confident that eBay will keep on moving ahead. She says, E-Bay's blend of community and commerce will keep it ahead. In spite of being as powerful and wealthy as Whitman is, owning more than $600 million worth of E-Bay stock, she manages to be very down to earth and modest. She dresses casually, works in something that looks like a "large cubical", and sometimes even responds to customer emails personally. My group picked E-Bay because it was very interesting and the company is much related to MIS. E-Bay uses the latest technology to insure the successful operation of its site. E-Bay uses the internet to connect thousands of buyers and sellers together in the world's largest online marketplace. The company currently has over 50 million registered users and has over 27,000 categories where these users can post or search for items. E-Bay is a great example of a very successful E-Commerce business and its CEO Meg Whitman continues to set the tone for her company and insuring its continuing success. |
