| Catharina was the youngest daughter of Philip the Fair and Juanna of Castile. She was born in 1507, after her father had died in 1506. She was raised in Tordesillas, where she lead a sad life at the side of her mother, who after the death of Philip was declared to be of unsound mind by her own father, Ferdinand of Aragn. In 1517, her brother Charles and sister Eleanora paid a visit to their mother and sister. Charles offered her a more comfortable way of living, but Juanna refused to eat if her daughter was taken away from her. Catharina was determent to stay with her mother. Nevertheless, six years later Charles took Juanna's last consolation: Catharina had to marry the young king of Portugal, Joo III (1502-1557). The marriage took place in 1524. She became a intellectual and political competent woman. On her portraits, you can see a sturdy and self-confident queen. Catharina became the mother of the heir, Joo, who in 1552 married the daughter of Catharina's brother Charles, Johanna. Joo died before his son was born. Right before his death in 1557, Joo III passed the reign of his grandchild on Catharina. She would occupy this for five years, then she left to spend her last years in the cloister of Madre de Deus, a few miles from Lissabon. Here she died in 1578. |
