in 1936 somoza became dictator by a coup in nicaragua. his son was dictator untill 1979, where the sandinists overtook the leadership by a revolution.

USA was responsible for organizing and financing a try to remove the sandinists. they were know as the contras. that lead to civil war in most of the eighties.

in 1984 the sandinists held the first democratic election. in 1989 the sandinists began to negotiat with the contras about ending the war.

since then there has been held several democratic elections, where the sandinists ended in opposition. nicaragua now have a good democraty without any interference from outside.
