hardhanded surpression of the political opposition occurred in el salvador, from the rightwing governmant.

on the 24 of march 1980 the bishop of san salvador oscar romero was murdered under a mass. because of his strong defence of human rights.

in october 1980 a guerilla-movement was formed, FMLN, it consisted of 5 organization, that fought against the salvador rightwing regime.

for 12 years the civil war took place. with inteference from USA against the guerilla-movment. FMLN fought against the USA-supported rightwing government.

but in 1 of january 1992 both parties signed an agreement in new york, under the leadership of the UN.

then more than 75.000 people had died, about 8.00 people missing, and about a million driven away from their home.

on the 20 of march 1994 the first democratic election after the civil war, was held. the rightwing party ARENA, won the election and FMLN talk about election rigging.

the people unhappiness about A increasing. and observers estimated that FMLN would win the election in 2004.

one had hoped that el salvador in the future, would develop from a bad democraty, to a wellfunctioning good democraty. but it probably will not happen, as long as the rigthwing party ARENA is in power.
