In high school years, a student’s future is immediately relevant to them. The majority of my students plan on taking a college entrance exam. Whether they are in Honors Algebra Two or Basic Math Four, the students always come to me for advice on practicing for standardized testing. Everyday practice of sample problems will be valuable to my students as they learn and build confidence. After searching numerous sites, I found the Yahoo! Education (http://education.yahoo.com/college/essentials/practice_tests/sat/ ) to be the easiest to access and simple to complete. I have used Yahoo! Educational sites in the past and have always had success with them in the classroom.

The students will be asked to visit the Yahoo! Education SAT Test Prep every day. In order to ensure that the students get the most out of this activity, they will be asked to journal their activity and thoughts each day. My goal is to have my students expand their experience in standardized test taking skills. The students will not only try the math problem, but also review the vocabulary word and tip of the day. Making this a cross-curricular activity will be an added bonus.

Having the students acquire the daily knowledge, apply different skills to different needs of assignment, journal thoughts, share with peers, and complete the problems in an assessment format will guide the students through the levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy. This process should flow as a natural growth from the beginnings of gathering knowledge to the exchange of thoughts and knowledge with peers each week.

This SAT prep site allows the student to interact and check answers. It also shows the correct procedure or explanation for the problem of the day. I am not as concerned with if the students get the answers by themselves or after checking the problem online. Just being exposed to the various math problems will be beneficial to the growing knowledge of my students.

Each week the students will have to answer a third-level during the Pair-Share activity. Since the context will change each week, so will the question. Here are a few samples of questions that may be asked.

1)      Were you or your partner able to predict the answer to (problem) based on common sense?

2)      Imagine (problem) was based on a right triangle, how would it change your answer?

3)      Apply the principle used in (problem) to this sample.

4)      Can you explain why (problem) only had one answer?

My students are proficient at using the internet. Our school has a wonderful website where the students are able to check the announcements, homework, activities, as well as contact the teachers. The students will be expected to complete the majority of the work on their own time. The students may access the website at home, in our media center, or in my classroom throughout the day. I require the use of the Hammonton High School website for extra credit, homework check, and projects, so I am confident that the availability of the internet will not be an issue. Another need throughout this workshop is the opportunity to ask questions of the teacher and peers. I will allow time at the end of each lesson to ensure that the students are seeking help if needed.

The conclusion of this weekly workshop will be to assess their growth in a paired activity. The daily journals for the week will be collected each Friday. On Monday, the students will be paired randomly to complete a few problems. They will have access to their journals and each other. The assessments will combine to a quiz grade for the quarter. This will not affect the grades all that much, but will give relevance to the students’ activities.
