3. first Arab to the north pole

The arctic is not a safe place to be by any stretch of the imagination .Essentially a vast , floating blog of ice , with only a handful of tiny landmasses ,landscape can be almost totally different from year to year. Even most experienced explores are lucky to return with all their fingers and toes .not mention their lives .into this hostile environment stepped Nabil al busaini .in fact ,he didn’t just step – he stepped and skied his away across 650km ,pulling 50 kg of equipment .he also carried the the flag of the sultanate of Oman ,which he held aloft at the north magnetic pole ,becoming the first Arab to achieve this impressive feat. on the way to the pole, Nabil was driven by the reward of success and pain at the thought of failure .on the final day ,what kept me going was being the first to get to the pole .when i was desperate to fall asleep, that[‘s what kept me going .i kept thinking .i’m going to make history ,straighten your back ,get a grip on yourself and don’t mess this up .Throughout the 20 -whatever days , every minutes was a different thing that kept me going ,either the fear of failure ,the fear of dying or reward of finishing and getting somewhere warm .
His exhaustion was often so absolute that vivid hallucinations plagued his progress. the ever – present cold ,averaging around -40 C but dropping as low as a recorded – 18 c , is his overriding memory of the experience .As an omani ,Nabil had an additional 30 C drop in temperature to get used to , compared his british teammates .Apart from the extreme cold , polar bears were a common feature of the journey , and nabil and team had their share of bear encounters .polar bears are dangerous ,but they not that threating because they intend to harm humans .they’re usually either curious or just don’t care .we saw five bears and none were aggressive .two just walked through the camp and ignored us .one was looking through our thing in tent ,another came and ripped the tent open , but the girl who was inside hit the bear on the nose with a saucepan .it walked away looking rather unhappy ! says Nabil .one final problem was the strain put on team relations by saverity of the conditions ,especially during the first three stages of the journey .However ,during the fouth and the final leg ,the team worked so well together they travelle
